Water Parks That Are Exuberant, Spacious, Bright and Memorable (As Well As Functional) Takes More Than Clever Engineering Creating water parks that are exuberant, spacious, bright and memorable (as well as functional) takes more than clever engineering. It requires an understanding of the many personalities of water and the ways that peopleWater interact Parks with it. Creating a Splash California Beach, Gyeongju, Korea Creating water parks that are exuberant, spacious, bright and memorable (as well as functional) takes more than clever engineering. It requires an understanding of the many personalities of water and the ways that people interact with it. California Beach, Gyeongju, Korea “IF THERE IS MAGIC ON THIS PLANET, IT IS CONTAINED IN WATER.” – Loren Eiseley, The Immense Journey, 1957 AN ATTRACTION TO WATER Center Parcs Les Trois Forêts Village, Moselle, France Water is one of the most powerful tools a designer has to work with. People are drawn to it. It plays to all of our most basic emotions and it fills us with a gratification that exceeds the delight of the senses. THE MAGIC OF WATER As landscape architects, water has always been In our early work, we felt great satisfaction when an important element in our work. Whether it’s we saw people playing in our water features, a reflecting pool at a resort, the focus of an urban even when they weren’t supposed to. From then park, or a splash-fountain in a playground or on, it was a natural progression for us to start plaza, we like water’s ability to change the way designing water parks, then to make it part of people experience the places we create. One our core business and finally to become leading thing that especially fascinates us is the enjoy- water park innovators. You could say that we owe ment that water brings. Besides being peaceful it all to the magic of water. and refreshing, water is also recreational – it is possibly the world’s first playground. A quiet pond or fountain intended as a soothing land- scape feature can just as easily be a noisy impromptu splash-pad. Water is constantly changing in form, mood and colour. It is beautiful and delightful. “What would the world be, once bereft of wet and wildness?” – Gerard Manley Hopkins, Inversnaid Chimelong Water park, Guangzhou, China The most important thing to remember about a water park: it is a park. At any given moment, there are people playing, eating, lounging and strolling. They might also be swimming, splashing, squirting, sliding, plunging and paddling – or simply enjoying a day out with the family. In our 30 years of international water park experience, we have never lost sight of this simple fact. But we have also been innovators in the sector, introducing revolut- ionary new concepts, designing the biggest and the first, pioneering the wide use of branding, rejuvenating existing successful parks and remembering that it’s the total environment, not the accumulation of attractions, that make a memorable guest experience. We were there at the beginning and we’re still the industry leaders. 1985 WORLD WATER PARK WEST EDMONTON MALL Water parkdesignstudies Edmonton, Canada Water parksinoperationorunderconstruction 1986 WILD WATER KINGDOM Brampton, Canada 1987 Key WaterPark Experience FORREC’s 1988 1989 1990 1991 1992 1993 199 41 LULU LEISURE ISLAND FIESTA TEXAS WATERPARK Abu Dhabi, UAE (SIX FLAGS) San Antonio, USA DR. • Midwest Waterparks: Bigger, Better, Wilder and Wetter
Midwest waterparks: Bigger, better, wilder and wetter Attractions make a big splash in the family fun business By David Mannweiler, Indianapolis Star May 15, 2005. --- George Washington was the Father of Our Country. Orville and Wilbur Wright were the Fathers of Aviation. This much we know. But who founded the American water park -- Stan Anderson or George Millay? A wet towel snap-off may be the only way to resolve that question. The World Waterpark Association backs Millay, because he created the first outdoor water park, Wet 'N Wild, in Orlando in 1977. The Wisconsin Dells Convention and Visitors Bureau endorses Anderson because he built the first indoor water park, the Water Factory, at his Polynesian Resort Hotel in the Dells in 1994. Either way, both men ignited something that forever changed the way American families spend their leisure time. Never have so many gotten so wet in so many places in so many ways. About 1,000 water parks are open in North America, said Gina Kellogg, director of communications for the World Waterpark Association. The list is growing by 30 to 40 each year, Kellogg added. Just this month, Paramount's Kings Island outside Cincinnati and Great Wolf Resorts Inc. announced a joint venture to build a 39-acre, $100 million Great Wolf Lodge resort at Kings Island that will include a 75,000-square-foot indoor water park (about the size of 11/3 football fields). Construction is to begin this summer; the 404-suite resort should open in late 2006. Kings Island general manager Craig Ross said the indoor water park and resort will turn the theme park into a year-round destination.
