Rugby & Boxing Success Two sisters, Hannah-May in Year 9 and Emily in Year 7 have been working hard recently to represent Rugby Union Football Club. Emily plays for the U13 team and Hannah-May for the U15 team. Both have participated in numerous match fixtures and tournaments across . The U13 team came joint first in the regional championships, with Emily scoring one of only two tries in the final. Both girls also continue to box with Peterborough Police Amateur Boxing Club and both have secured the Boxing England National Bronze award. Hannah-May has secured her boxing card and successfully competed in her first skills bout at Barnstaple Boxing venue in Devon – in which she was deemed the clear winner in a tough and gritty fight. Both are set to participate in the forthcoming Cambridge boxing exhibition. As a result of their sporting endeavours, both girls have been separately presented to the Mayor of Peterborough (Emily for rugby) and (Hannah-May for boxing) and appeared in local media, including the Peterborough Evening Telegraph and Look East (during a Northampton Saints Rugby training session). www.peterboroughtoday.co.uk/…/devon- delight-for-young-police…

Both girls display self-motivation, energy, courage and commitment which is very impressive. They undertake boxing training at least three times a week, rugby training twice a week and travel nationally at weekends to compete in match venues. Their parents can only stand by with a mixture of admiration and trepidation as they watch them compete in contact sports, which until recently were still considered the sole preserve of men! They are excelling in their chosen sports and shaping modern perceptions in the world that they live in.

Many congratulations to both girls and keep up the good work!

Awards & Charity Success

We Got Gold!

We are delighted to announce that we, Hampton College, have achieved the School Games Gold Mark Award for the 2017/18 academic year.

The School Games Mark is a Government led award scheme launched in 2012, facilitated by the Youth Sport Trust to reward schools for their commitment to the development of competition across their school and into the community, and we are delighted to have been recognised for our success.

Hampton College has had many sporting achievements this year in a variety of different sports. Students have done well in competitive sports fixtures against other schools however sporting achievements from other areas must also be recognised. Hampton College has many students who participate in sport and physical activity regularly just for fun and the health benefits. We also have many students who carry out sports leadership at the primary festivals, extra-curricular clubs and inter-house competitions. These students coach, officiate, manage teams, score and organise equipment and without their help these events couldn't run. As part of our application, we were asked to fulfil criteria in the areas of participation, competition, workforce and clubs, and we are pleased that he hard work of everyone at our school has been rewarded this year.

A special thanks to the PE Department and other staff across the school who have helped to lead clubs and teams for the benefit of our students. Also, to staff for releasing students from lessons on a regular basis to support the events. We look forward to applying once again in 2019! Miss Napier Teacher of PE

Readathon

Readathon (or its new brand name of Read for Good) was a huge success as always with Years 7 and 8. Not only did the students really embrace the spirit of the event by bringing in

their books to lessons and reading, but also raised the grand total of £500. However, we couldn’t have done this without all the support and encouragement from home, so I’d like to say a really big thank you to all of you for supporting each child in their contribution. This money will enable the charity to supply more books to seriously sick children in hospitals, as well as improving the students’ own literacy and love of reading. There were some notable contributions made again this year (both financial and taking part) and these students will have their efforts recognised in the end of year assembly. Year 11 Prom

Glitz and Glam

On Thursday July 5, Hampton College celebrated its Year 11 Prom at Holiday Inn Thorpe Wood. Over a hundred students attended the event with family, friends and staff witnessing their arrival in a range of luxury cars. Inside the Buckingham Suite, which was decorated according to the theme of Glitz and Glam, a sumptuous three course meal was served. Staff gave speeches about the students and a variety of awards were given.

The highlights of the awards were Harrison Base and Milly Manna winning Prom King and Queen, the best dressed students as voted by staff were Lily Mace and Dami Agboola, whilst Lucas Bickers was the most likely to appear on Love Island! Mr Gilligan, Head of School was impressed with his first Hampton College Prom and stated “the prom was a great success and the students didn’t want it to end.”

The purpose of the Year 11 Prom is to reward the students for all their hard work and excellent behaviour throughout the year. May I thank all the parents and students for their continued support and I wish them every success for the future.

Thank you to Top Notch Entertainers and Peter Redhead for providing the music and the photography. Photographs are available online from the following website: http://

Year 13 Leavers Event

Sixth Form had an incredibly successful Leavers’ evening in The Penthouse Suite at The Bull Hotel with 73% attendance, one of the highest ever. Students and staff arrived along a red carpet before enjoying a three course dinner followed by plenty of dancing ‘till the end of the night.

Students had a great evening and showed their appreciation to the Sixth Form team by presenting them with surprise gifts and thanking teaching staff for all of their support over the last two years. We wish them all the very best for their futures.

Beyond Post 16 Week

We had our new ‘Beyond Post 16 Week’ during 21 – 28 June. Students started the week at the Skills Show, where there were lots of stalls from employers and training providers. Students were able to get advice on career paths. They then had 3-4 hours through the week in small groups where they got help with course choice and personal statements / CVs and worked independently completing a research booklet. Mrs Keightley arranged for some previous students to come in and work with the students and give advice. We ended a week with a visit to the UCAS Higher Education Convention, where students were able to gather prospectuses and speak to universities directly. The week was really positive and gave students a good start to the process. They are using study leave to draft personal statements by 6 July and teachers are currently preparing subject references. We have brought the university application process forward this year to relieve stress / anxiety in Year 13 and to give students the best possible opportunities. Mrs Weston Head of Sixth Form

Rewards Lunch

You may be aware that as part of our reward structure, Hampton College runs a competition called “Houseopoly”. This is an initiative which focuses on the key areas of; attendance, punctuality and positive behaviour.

Each tutor group within the College has a ‘Houseopoly’ board displayed in their tutor room. The concept is to complete their board as a tutor group and achieve rewards as they progress. The rewards are placed at timely intervals around the board and come in the following order Form Tutor Award, Head of House Award, SLT Award and Head of College Award. Each week all tutor groups can achieve a certificate based on whether the tutor group collectively has had 100% attendance for the week, 100% punctuality for the week and no negative behaviour events. If this is the case they are awarded with a certificate which is then placed on their tutor groups Houseopoly board and progresses them a place at a time around their board. When the tutor group reaches the ‘reward places’ on the board each student within the tutor group is recognised for their contribution towards the tutor group’s success.

S-ARP achieved the prestigious SLT AWARD and as reward for all the tutor groups achievement they were provided with a free lunch served by our very own Head of School Mr Gilligan in his posh Tux. Well done to all those students in S-ARP. Mrs Judge

Bethan Endicott – Swimmer

Bethan has been an incredible asset to us here at Hampton College. Since starting with us in October 2017 and throughout her time at the College, Bethan has shown incredible commitment to her education, alongside her swim training and competitions. Bethan has been working incredibly hard with ambitions to compete in national competitions.

Over May half term, Bethan won Gold in the 50m fly and a Silver in the 100m fly meaning she has qualified for England Nationals. Bethan has also qualified to compete in the British Summer Championships for the 50m Butterfly.

Alongside her main stroke of butterfly, Bethan has also developed her 50m backstroke time, pushing close to podium finishes. Bethan is an incredibly humble young lady and continually strives to better herself.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish Bethan every success in her future education and swimming as she departs us to follow her passion and talent for swimming.

Whodunnit?

In English lessons this term, group 7a1 have been reading the Carnegie Medal winning novel Calling A Dead Man by Gillian Cross: a riveting thriller and murder mystery adventure that takes you through the darkest depths of Siberia.

With this as inspiration, they have been working hard this week to create their own ‘Murder Mystery’ games, with secret twists and turns ‘whodunnit?’ narratives and some nefarious characters who may come undone after a little questioning.

We look forward to testing the games out later this week. My guess…the butler did it!

Year 5 Harry Potter Day

On Wednesday 11 July, Ms England and Mr Edenbrow went to Hampton Primary Phase to formally invite students to the Harry Potter day on Thursday 12 July. This was done with scroll invites and exploding cotton. The students then made wands and hats with their Year 6 teachers in preparation.

On Thursday the day began with students running through the gateway to Hogwarts(Hampton college). They straight away started their day in the Science Department, working with potions. Alchemy and magical creatures. All things that is fun and go bang….

For lunch they were treated to a banquet fit for young wizards. Some highlights were worm slushes, owl and witches hat cakes kindly provided by Cucina.

In the afternoon in the Great Hall, students where sorted into houses by the famous sorting hat and then had an afternoon of amazing drama and music.

Fun was had by all.

Language Leaders

Throughout the course of the Year 11 Year 7 students have participated in the Routes into Languages ‘Language Leaders’ scheme. They attended a weekly after-school club in which they considered the attributes necessary to deliver language learning and planned French language learning activities which they initially taught to their peers. They then reflected on the process, identifying strengths to exploit and areas of weakness to develop. The scheme culminated with the intrepid linguists attending Hampton Vale Primary School in late June where they taught French to the Year 6 pupils. Their commitment clearly paid off, with each group performing with confidence when delivering entertaining and interactive lessons on the French alphabet, numbers to 30, animals and the months of the year. The Language Leaders were great ambassadors for the College and we commend them on their dedication to the scheme. Bravo! Ms Hardiman Head of MFL

Junior Maths Challenge

The Junior Maths Challenge, which took place at the end of April, resulted in two students qualifying for the Grey Kangaroo due to their brilliant scores. This competition took place on 12 June and Ellen Jarvis from Year 7 and Abdul Afzal from Year 8 both did extremely well, congratulations to both these students.

However, a special congratulations has to go to Ellen who received a Merit Certificate, meaning she was in the top 25% of the students in the country who took qualified to take part in this Challenge! A huge achievement – well done Ellen.

Both students have received a certificate and a Maths Challenge/Grey Kangaroo Key Ring to commemorate the event. Mrs Hope Teacher of Maths

Rounders

It has been a successful summer for the Year 7 Rounders team. After a slow start to attendance at the club, the girls really began to engage and develop their skills, knowledge and tactics and strategies in the game. The students played a round robin of friendly fixtures against Hampton Gardens and City of Peterborough Academy. A narrow loss to Hampton Gardens, followed by a fantastic win against COPA put the girls into a really strong position ahead of the annual Peterborough Rounders Tournament. On Monday 2 July we attended the Tournament. In the group stage, Hampton College faced Kings, Sir Harry Smith and Bushfield Academy. The girls played fantastically, winning all three group stage games and really demonstrating their ability to work in partnership with each other. In the next round we played . It was a tight game, but Hampton College won the toss and elected to field first. Knowing the score they were chasing the girls dug deep and won their semi-final setting up a re- match against Kings who they had already played earlier on in the Tournament. Unfortunately, one of our players had to withdraw from the final, meaning the girls played the final with eight players. Another very good performance from the girls and they finished runners up overall. Congratulations and well done to all the students involved in the competition. Ms Bowd Teacher of PE

Music Department

As the year draws to a close, the Music Department has once again been heavily involved in providing entertainment for a variety of events across the school. Students have performed at the Year 11 leavers’ assembly, the end of term assemblies and the Year 6 welcome evening. Furthermore, on Sports Day several student groups combined to ensure live music was heard continually throughout lunchtime, as the audience tucked into their BBQ lunch. The main event for the department this term was when we joined the rest of

the Arts Faculty to deliver the Arts Celebration Concert on 28 June.

Participants ranged from all year groups featuring solo items, ensembles and the Hampton Schools Orchestra. Some students were performing for the very first time at a Hampton College concert and sadly we said goodbye to some who have performed for seven years in our Main Hall (covering well over 20 events). We were delighted to welcome orchestral members from Hampton Vale Primary School, Hampton College Primary Phase and Hamptons Gardens to open the concert as part of the combined orchestra. The evening was closed with performances from the now well-established Hampton Voices. Mr Smith Head of Music

Enrichment Week

Learn to Row

Day One

Starting the day, we used the indoor rowing machines; first rowing in time with each other, then splitting into two teams and doing a relay competition. After using the machines, we set up boats in pairs, on the grass, and learnt and practised how to use the blades. Next, we set up the boats in the water and built our confidence by doing a circuit around the end of the lake. To finish the day, we took the boats out of the water, washed them and then put them back away, ready for the next day.

Day Two

Feeling excited but nervous, we all carried a boat and placed it on some grass. We were told that we were taking the stabilizers off and that shocked everyone. We practised on the grass, getting our technique right. Then we managed to carry our boat down to the lake. We all climbed into our boats and we set off. At first, we were struggling while trying to do a little route around a 400 metres square. When we gained confidence, we started to attempt 500 metres which all together summed up to 1000 metres. Only three people were dry by the end!

After break, we had to do some tricks such as 360 degrees turns and standing up, it was very entertaining. After lunch, we did some serious rowing. We had to row 1km in a straight line. Then, with the last 10 minutes, we had a play-around. We had a phenomenal day and we are extremely grateful! Thank you everyone! Jess Moorfoot (Year 9) & Onri Wheeler-Myers (Year 8)

Camp

Year 7 students have had another fantastic week at PGL Caythorpe this year. Eighteen students embarked on four days of outdoor education; taking part in numerous team building, fear conquering, new and exciting activities. The students and staff had a fantastic morning on Tuesday kayaking on the lake, with both staff and students taking the opportunity to cool off in the sunshine with some playful water fights from the their boats. Tuesday evening was spent around the campfire, where songs were sung and marshmallows where roasted on the fire. Students developed their communication skills, ability to work as a team and resilience in other activities, throughout the week. Activities included raft and buggy building, high ropes, giant swing and climbing. New friends have been made, existing friendships have grown stronger and memories have been made that will last a lifetime.

Scuba Diving

Norfolk Geography Fieldtrip

Hunstanton Geography fieldwork June 2018

On Tuesday 26 and Thursday 28 June, the Year 10 Geographers went to the Norfolk coast as part of their GCSE course.

Each day, around 50 students went to collect data to help them understand coastal processes and defences. Having fieldwork is essential for completing the GCSE Geography course – students had already completed a day in Sheffield earlier in the year.

All students had successful days collecting data on the beach at Old Hunstanton, investigating long shore drift, measuring a beach profile, recording sediment samples, as well as collecting data about the height of the cliffs. They then went to New Hunstanton to further investigate the coastal processes, as well as investigating the effectiveness of the various coastal defences present at that location.

There was even time to go and do some questionnaires, visit the shops and get some fish and chips!

All students have spent the last few lessons of term using data that was collected in Hunstanton to analyse and evaluate the coastal processes and sea defences.

Thanks to all the Geography department staff, the support staff

who went over the two days (Mrs Keen, Mrs Smith, Miss Howes, Mrs Metcalfe, Mrs Hayden and Mr Edwards) and the colleagues in school who arranged and organised the trip.

National Enterprise Challenge Final

Five Year 8 students embarked upon the National Enterprise Centre in Telford on the 4 June to compete against 1,600 other students in their pitches for the Kidzania competition they undertook in October 2017. The students created T-shirts, banners, posters and acted out a YouTube advert in front of an expert panel of business owners and entrepreneurs. The students were composed, focused, upheld the school reputation and were polite to all other schools and judges. Despite not getting to the final stage o f t h e competition, s t u d e n t s enjoyed the experience and have built upon their confidence and resilience when going up against some tough competition.

Grafham Water Team Building Trip As part of their BTEC Business Studies course, students in Year 12 took part in a team building day at Grafham Water, where they were set challenges in building rafts and land based activities. This part of the syllabus asks students to explore the different elements that builds effective teams, in addition to team roles. As part of the day they were also asked to look at leadership roles to support their understanding of the terminology studied within lessons.

All students embraced the cold water and supported each other during the day, showing true collaborative working. This also challenged students’ thinking skills and ability to communicate effectively to ensure the teams were successful in their challenges.

Travel and Tourism and V-Cert Business Trip to Alton Towers

Students in Year 10, in preparation for their examinations and coursework within the subjects of V-Cert Level 2 Business and Travel and Tourism. This included workshops in marketing and customer service. Students were able to go behind the scenes within the Merlin Group Entertainment Company and assess what it

takes for businesses to remain competitive within the marketplace, ensuring creativity and innovation to ensure they maintain their market share within the industry.

Students were then able to explore the park and take a look at how the business implements these strategies for the public.

Sixth Form Trips and Visits

Sixth Form visit to Careers Skill Show at East of England Showground

On 21 June, Year 10s and Year 12 visited the East of England showground to attend the Careers Skill Show, provided by Mission Possible. Whether it was a chance for the students to look for possible job opportunities, potential post 16 options for Year 10 after they complete Year 11 next year or for Year 12s, a chance to further their knowledge on universities or apprenticeships that may be on offer for them when leaving after A Level. All the information needed could be accessed at this careers fair. Not only was the event a day full of information, attendants could enjoy live music on offer in the entrance where the stage was placed.

Students found it a useful day, as it broadened our knowledge students for what was actually on offer for us to further our education in something specific. It also meant that the students were able to ask the burning queries and questions they wanted so for when the time does come, they are able to commit to their final decision. Not only was this able to happen, but freebies were on offer including pens, bags and even foam fingers. As though, anything free on offer would be snapped up quick!

Overall, it was a useful day in terms of giving the students an insight into what is offer on for them and allows them to finally start to think what their future will hold for them.

Sixth Form visit to the UCAS Convention at Bedford University

On 28 June, Year 12 made the journey to Bedford University to the UCAS convention. The UCAS conventions happen all around the country provided by UCAS themselves, the organisation that operates the application process for British universities.

With over 150 universities in attendance, students were able to enquire to as many further education providers our heart desired, if you were wanting to pursue a higher education course. They could ask questions to many of the ambassadors of the universities and even current students so they could have an insight to the real experience of a student attending. Whether these questions included what their chosen course was about, what student life was like, what the accommodation was like etc. they could be answered on this day.

With this many universities in one place, it also meant freebies on offer from pens to bags and even free food, which I think is a winner for everyone. If looking at universities was complete before making our way home for the day, students could sit on the green area listening to live music either in the shade or soaking up the British sun, a rare sight in England.

Overall, the day was an enjoyable trip out, which broadened knowledge on all the universities on offer for post 18 options. Making it even better, the day warmed up and we were all even able to get some freebies! Katie Green Year 12 Student

Hampton Lakes Update

Hampton Lakes Primary School – Update July 2018

The Trust’s latest new school project, Hampton Lakes Primary School, is due to open in September 2019 to Reception children and will be located on the new development to the east of the A15, near Teardrop Lake. You may be aware that the building contract had been with Carillion Plc. We have been working hard behind the scenes with Peterborough City Council to progress the project following the collapse of Carillion. The building contract is now in the process of being re-tendered and we anticipate that the building will now be completed by late Spring 2020.

In order to still open on time to an intake of 30 Reception children, the children and staff will be accommodated on a temporary basis at Hampton College Primary Phase (HCPP) from September 2019. We intend to convert the staffroom into a classroom for two terms. This means that Hampton College primary children will not be moved or disturbed, and that the teachers and support staff at HCPP will get a refurbished staffroom once the class has moved to the new building.

Some of you may recall that when we opened HCPP we were accommodated in two classrooms on the site of Hampton Hargate Primary School. We have fond memories of that year and will always be grateful to our friends at Hampton Hargate for helping us out in that way. In the same spirit, we think that hosting the Hampton Lakes children at Hampton College temporarily is the right thing to do, given the demand for primary places in the local area and for the residents on the new Hampton Gardens development, who have moved in anticipating that a new primary school would open shortly.

Once we have moved in to the new building, we will be able to increase our intake to 60 children per year group at Hampton Lakes.

There will be an information evening for parents/carers considering sending their Reception age children to Hampton Lakes Primary School in November, hosted at Hampton College Primary Phase. We will also being hosting a number of drop-in information events for the community, and consulting on the admissions policy, in October/November this year.
