FENN TREASURE SOLUTION Brian Erskine Arizona [email protected] Dedicated to the safe enjoyment of the beauty of the American West FOR GENERAL PUBLICATION “If I cannot move heaven, I will raise hell.” – Virgil, The Aeneid of Virgil, Book Seven, Line 312 October 2018 / January 2019 1 Foreword A famous public puzzle has motivated thousands to seek hidden treasure by researching and exploring the western slopes of the American Rockies. Forrest Fenn, who created the puzzle, is a leading citizen of Santa Fe. He is an artist and retired celebrity art dealer, a best-selling author, an archaeologist and conservationist, and an Air Force veteran combat pilot who served in Vietnam. After years of planning, he composed the puzzle into the form of a short poem, defining a location and other information, and publicized the quest. The puzzle is solved. The poem indicates a specific place (“site”) in the San Juan Mountains of Colorado. Located between Ouray and Silverton, the site is found on the west bank of the Uncompahgre River, in a pocket of a scenic box canyon not far south of where the river chutes under U. S. 550. “Mountains” of irrefutable evidence prove both the site location and the full solution. The quest has two parts, as indicated by the “double omega” or “ΩΩ” colophon to Mr. Fenn’s book, The Thrill of the Chase, denoting two endings (more speculatively, “colophon” implies “Colorado”). Perhaps contrary to popular assumption, the poem indicates that no treasure is found at the site. Exhaustively exploring the site and failing to find treasure concludes the first stage of the quest.

We will be contacting you to review the analysis and consult with you about free solutions to improve your collection. In the meantime, here is a summary of your analysis. In putting the analysis together, we first indicate the average age and number of titles in each part of your collection, then we compare it to a brand new "exemplary" collection that would meet size standards for the number of students in your school. You should then be able to see some of the potential problem areas in your collection and where the collection may fall short of standards. Obviously, what is exemplary for one school may not be completely right for another school, but this does give us a good starting point. You know better than we how your collection is used, so please adapt these recommendations as you see fit. The following summaries highlight the areas that seem the most in need of attention in the report on the next few pages. Please look at your report closely to determine detailed size, age and weeding needs. v With the information you supplied, we were able to successfully categorize 100% of your MARC records. v Throughout the collection, the average date of publication is 2006 or 15 years old. v The average age is 5 years older than recommended.

Fenn's Treasure 1 What's more exciting than the thought of buried treasure? According to legend, pirates buried their booty to keep it safe until they could return for it. One famous pirate is Captain William Kidd. He is known to have buried treasure off the coast of New York. However, this treasure was discovered long ago. Most other tales of buried pirate treasure are just myths. But what if there was a real treasure chest that people could search for today? A man named Forrest Fenn wondered the same thing. 2 Forrest Fenn (born August 22, 1930) is an art collector and author. When he was just nine years old, he found his first arrowhead.

Ogilvie, History of the General Slocum disaster by which nearly 1200 lives were lost by the burning of the steamer General Slocum in Hell gate, New York harbor, June 15, 1904 (1904) There is a popular saying that claims timing is everything, and in no other field of study is that truer than in history. For instance, under normal conditions, a ship that sank with more than 1,000 passengers aboard - most of whom died - would be big news, yet today the sinking of the PS General Slocum is oen overlooked if not entirely forgotten.
