Horst Janssen Creative Corner Unsere vierte Aufgabe war es, etwas Kreatives zu machen. Wie gut, dass ei- ner der bedeutendsten Zeichner der jüngsten Zeit aus Oldenburg kam, dass es Oldenburg ein Museum für ihn gibt und dass er ein bekanntes Oldenburg- Plakat gezeichnet hat, „Knabe Oldenburg“. Wir haben dieses Plakat zuerst kopiert – und dann verändert. orst Janssen ist am 14. 11. 1929 in Oldenburg geboren und starb am 31. H August 1995 auch in Hamburg. Er war ein sehr bedeutender deutscher Grafiker und Zeichner. - 1942 wurde seine künstlerische Begabung durch seinen Zeichenlehrer Hans Wienhausen bemerkt und gefördert. Nachdem seine Eltern beide an Tuberkulose starben, zog er 1945 zu seiner Tante nach Hamburg. Sie Abbildung 14: Kopie von Johanna finanzierte sein Kunststudium. What a luck that one of the outstanding modern Artists came from Oldenburg. He has made an Oldenburg poster named “Knabe Oldenburg”. First we’ve copied it, then we’ve changed it. Jorinde Voigt the State of Play
Jorinde Voigt The State of Play Spring 2020 David Nolan Gallery is delighted to present “The State of Play,” an exhibition of new works by Jorinde Voigt. For the artist’s fifth solo exhibition with the gallery, Voigt continues to expand upon her singular practice of methodical and conceptually rigorous “visual scores” that transcend everyday perceptual experiences and attempt to translate into color and form that which is most ephemeral and impenetrable. Working serially and within a predetermined structure and set of formal restraints, Voigt’s process begins by hand dying each sheet of paper a hue that corresponds to specific stimuli or emotion. In the case of her newest series, Potential (2020), Voigt selected a midnight blue, albeit with its various real-life associations (i.e. time of day, nautical and cosmological phenomena, et al.) put into question. Voigt’s meticulous notations and gestural markings then introduce an added layer of visual coding, allowing each unique work within the series to convey its own individual and emotional meaning. Experienced serially, Voigt’s works build incrementally, unraveling as if walking through an operatic score, lulling the viewer into a kind of dream state that is at once familiar and otherworldly. As in reality, elements of chance always interrupt Voigt’s pre-existing frameworks and new forms and meanings emerge that lead to other revelations, and so on. In The Match and studies for Immersive Integral Rainbow the artist simultaneously alludes to real and philosophical phenomena while destabilizing the viewer’s expectation of space and time. Voigt’s applications of jagged shapes of gold leaf likewise grounds the work and suggests infinite movement.

November 2018 VORWORT VITA „Nein, ich bin die Gnade Gottes.” HORST JANSSEN Horst Janssen antwortete mit diesen Worten dem Schriftsteller Peter Rühmkorf auf dessen Ausruf: 14.11.192914.11.1929 geboren in Wandsbek bei Hamburg „Mensch, Janssen, Du bist ja wie die Gnade Gottes!“ wuchs als uneheliches Kind seiner Mutter Martha Janssen, einer Damen- schneiderin, in Oldenburg bei den Großeltern auf, dem Schneidermeister Horst Janssen – ein Ausnahmekünstler, ein exzentrisches Genie, ein Einzelgänger und Provokateur, Individualist als Johann Friedrich und seiner Ehefrau Anna Janssen Mensch wie als Künstler, eine Jahrhunderterscheinung, ein Charmeur, der sehr fürsorglich sein konnte, dann aber auch 1939 1939 Tod des Großvaters an Tbc aufbrausend, eigensinnig und unberechenbar, permanent produktiv, ungeheuer talentiert, enorm sensibel, ein großer Unter- 1942 1942 Schüler der Nationalpolitischen Erziehungsanstalt (Napola) in Haselünne/Emsland. halter, oft Mittelpunkt der Hamburger Gesellschaft, ein Säufer und Egomane mit hohem Musenverbrauch. Now, through a grant from the Kemper Educational and Charitable Fund, The Art Insti tute of Chicago can make some of these important private col lections accessible to the public. A new series of exhibitions funded by the Kemper Fund and presented under the title Chi cago Collects - will focus on prints and drawings in Chicago collections. It is appropriate that the first of these exhibitions be devoted to the collection of Dr. Eugene A. Solow, a long standing donor to the Department of Prints and Drawings, a member of its Advisory Committee, and a Benefactor of the Art Institute. It is with gratitude to the Kemper Fund for its vision and generosity, and to Eugene Solow for his continuing commit ment, that we are pleased to present an exhibition that demon strates the fruitful relationship between this institution and the collectors who support it.
