RAC0010.1177/0306396815608357Race & ClassKelly 608357research-article2015 SAGE Los Angeles, London, New Delhi, Singapore, Washington DC Jubilee and the limits of African American freedom after Emancipation BRIAN KELLY Abstract: Scholarship generated in the post-civil rights US underpins a growing consensus that any honest confrontation with the American past requires an acknowledgment both of the nation’s foundations in racially-based slave labour and of the critical role that the enslaved played in ending that system. But scholars equally need to examine why the end of slavery did not deliver freedom, but instead – after a short-lived ‘jubilee’ during which freedpeople savoured their ‘brief moment in the sun’ – opened up a period of extreme repression and violence. This article traces the political trajectory of one prominent ex-slave and Republican party organiser, Elias Hill, to assess the constraints in which black grassroots activists operated. Though mainly concerned with the dashed hopes of African Americans, their experience of a steep reversal is in many ways the shared and profoundly significant legacy of ex-slaves across the former plantation societies of the Atlantic world. Brian Kelly, reader in US history at Queen’s University Belfast, has published widely on the prob- lem of racial antagonism and its impact on working-class politics in the US. His first book, Race, Class and Power in the Alabama Coalfields, 1908–1921 (Illinois, 2001), won the Isaac and Tamara Deutscher Memorial Prize. Former director of the After Slavery Project, he is co-editor with Bruce Baker of After Slavery: race, labor and citizenship in the Reconstruction South (Florida, 2013), and is completing an extended monograph on grassroots black political mobilisation in Reconstruction South Carolina. -

Kennedy, an event Tthat changed America and is one of those mile- stones in history that almost everyone alive at the time can recall exactly where they were when they heard the news. Thomas Murray of Accomac was a journalist cov- ering Capitol Hill for the Asbury Park Press and the Jersey City Journal and happened to be at the White House that fateful day. “I was interviewing Andrew Hatcher, the first black person to serve in the White House press of- fice, when I heard five bells go off on the UPI wire service,” Murray recalled. “I knew it was important from the number of bells ringing. I read a story from Merriman Smith coming across the wire that said President Kennedy had been shot.” Smith was a Pulitzer Prize-winning wire service reporter on the scene in Dallas. It is not intended for amateur use, and as such is not equipped with the graphical user interfaces that main stream “www” consumer Internet sites are designed with. To use it, using your computer keyboard, hold “CONTROL” and tap “F” This action will bring up a query field. Only use one or two words of a manufacturer’s name when performing this search. It is best to use the second name of Chinese manufacturers as their first name may be a Province. Using the “find next” key stroke, go all the way through the document until you find (and record) every file name associated with your manufacturer. Manually type ftp://ftp.nhtsa.dot.gov/mfrmail or just click on this hyperlink. Hold “control” and tap “F” to display the search screen again allowing you to enter the previously discovered “file names.” Double clicking these file names brings up images of the manufacturer’s VIN decoders. Kierstin entered Shelton School in seventh grade in 2012 20 Spotlight on Sports and successfully completed eighth grade with honors in 21 Parents’ Page the spring of 2014. Kierstin was outstanding, soaring both in 22 Community Connections Beyond the Campus academics and athletics. While maintaining an A average, 24 Staff Stuf Kierstin broke numerous track records. This year she had 25 Annual Report of Gifts 2013-2014 participated in the Junior Olympics national qualifier event. Kierstin also set an example of service through her involvement in Girl Scouts and volunteer work with SpiritHorse, MISSION STATEMENT a not-for-profit organization where she donated many hours Shelton on a mission to help autistic children build skills and confidence. a school and resource center dedicated to — making a difference — Kierstin won praise from both teachers and peers and by serving and empowering the lives of unanimously won the Spirit of Shelton Award this year.
