At the Adam Mickiewicz Institute, we do not speak about the success of the Presidency; we speak about its effects, thanks to which Poland now has a face and our national brand is ever more robust and ever more reflective of the most desirable traits. Equally important to us is the fact that, due to the geographic reach of the Presidency, we gained valuable and practical experience in the Far East, which we plan to capitalise on in upcoming seasons. Though the Presidency is now behind us, two of its pillar projects will continue to shine with a new lease on life and, thus, a new energy: the I, CULTURE Orchestra and the Karol Szymanowski project.

THE ALEXANDROV ENSEMBLE (OR THE RED ARMY CHOIR & ORCHESTRA) The Alexandrov Ensemble is an official army choir of the Russian armed forces. Founded during the Soviet era, the ensemble consists of a male choir, an orchestra, and a dance ensemble. The Ensemble has entertained audiences both in Russia and throughout the world, performing a range of music including folk tunes, hymns, operatic arias and popular music. The group's repertoire has included The Volga Boatmen's Song, Katyusha, Kalinka, and Ave Maria. It is named for its first director, Alexander Vasilyevich Alexandrov (1883–1946). Its formal name since 1998 has been Academic Ensemble of Song and Dance of the Russian Army named after A. V. Alexandrov. The Alexandrov Ensemble and the MVD Ensemble are the only groups with the right to claim the title "Red Army Choir". On 25 December 2016, the artistic director and 63 other members of the Ensemble were killed in the Russian Defence Ministry aircraft crash of a 1983 Tupolev Tu-154 into the Black Sea just after takeoff from the southern resort city of Sochi, Russia.

Dewey Politics, Government, and Law Drake Dewey PS490 - Senior Thesis Dr. Kachuyevski May 5, 2021 Soft Power Present during the Cold War: 1946-1991 Abstract: On December 25, 1991, Mikhail Gorbachev resigned as the leader of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics which resulted in the formal conclusion of the Cold War. The Cold War was an ideological battle between the United States and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics from the mid-1940s until 1991. I have decided to put the beginning date of the Cold War as March 5, 1946, while the end date is December 25, 1991. During the Cold War, there was a new form of power which was coined by Joseph Nye. Scholars have questioned the influence of soft versus hard power during the Cold War. Soft power, according to Joseph Nye, is the ability of “a country to persuade others to do what it wants without force or coercion.” Emerging from this is my research question which asks: did the use of soft power, through the use of culture, sports, films, and music, contribute to the outcome of the Cold War? By using the method process tracing and a wide variety of variables, I can answer my question in the affirmative. The United States and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics did engage in a different kind of war and the winner was the United States through their use of soft power.
