S. A.) is found in the first document approved by the 1984 General Assembly entitled “Hispanic Ministries in the Southwest: Directions for the Future.” In 1983, reunion took place between the Presbyterian Church in the U. S. and the United Presbyterian Church in the U. S. A.. The reunion process between the two largest branches of North American Presbyterianism required the attention of the church. The work of Hispanic ministries was relegated to a lesser priority. Other projects, such as the Book of Common Worship, were also postponed and delayed. No follow up report on Hispanic ministries was made because the implementation did not take place. In 1995, the Presbytery of the Pacific, reclaiming the previous action, moved at the 207th General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (U. S. A.) that a broad strategy be developed and implemented for ministry with Spanish-speaking groups in the U. S. A. and Puerto Rico. This motion was known as Proposal 95-70. Since then, the Office of Hispanic Congregational Enhancement, the National Presbyterian Hispanic Caucus, and the Advisory Committee of Hispanic Ministries have been working on this project. In 1996, the Advisory Committee of Hispanic Ministries and the National Presbyterian Hispanic Caucus, presented a plan to the Office of National Ministries Division, to develop a general strategy for ministry with Spanish-speaking groups in the entire country. The plan included regional consultations and a national symposium for 1999, but the symposium was not possible until 2000. The Strategy Committee was created with representatives from the previously mentioned entities. In 1997 and 1998, the Office of Hispanic Congregational Development and the Office of Racial Ethnic Ministries along with other General Assembly entities, were not able to obtain the necessary funds for the development of the project. Without this support, the basic process of having regional consultations and the symposium was not possible. A new plan was then adopted. The Strategy Committee selected several writers. The writers were to prepare drafts for the topics which were envisioned to be included in the final document. These drafts were received and reviewed by the Strategy Committee, and then sent to the regional caucuses for input and suggestions. The drafts were also presented for input and suggestions at the First National Symposium on Hispanic Ministries. In addition, input was also received from meetings held separately by some synods. All the material which was accumulated in this process was considered and served as the basis for this document. The material included reflections, analyses, and suggestions which are presented for your study. The Advisory Committee for Hispanic Ministries along with the Office of Hispanic Congregational Enhancement took upon themselves the most difficult and risk-filled task.. This task was to receive and study all the materials, create order from among all the input and suggestions, fill the void on some topics, edit the entire materials and create a coherent presentation to fit within the general strategy of the Presbyterian Church (U. S. A.). 1 In order to be more inclusive with Portuguese speaking groups, and other groups with Latin roots, the word Latino was added to the title. The task was not easy. The quantity of the accumulated material made it necessary to select the best from among all the input. The task was accepted with “fear and trembling,” but with confidence relying on the Lord’s direction. In order to achieve uniformity and coherence in the document, the work encountered several obstacles.

M. van Tol Doctor of Philosophy University of York History February 2016 Abstract From its inception, the French Wars of Religion was a European phenomenon. The internationality of the conflict is most clearly illustrated by the Protestant princes who engaged militarily in France between 1567 and 1569. Due to the historiographical convention of approaching the French Wars of Religion as a national event, studied almost entirely separate from the history of the German Reformation, its transnational dimension has largely been ignored or misinterpreted. Using ten German Protestant princes as a case study, this thesis investigates the variety of factors that shaped German understandings of the French Wars of Religion and by extension German involvement in France. The princes’ rich and international network of correspondence together with the many German-language pamphlets about the Wars in France provide an insight into the ways in which the conflict was explained, debated, and interpreted. Applying a transnational interpretive framework, this thesis unravels the complex interplay between the personal, local, national, and international influences that together formed an individual’s understanding of the Wars of Religion. These interpretations were rooted in the longstanding personal and cultural connections between France and the Rhineland and strongly influenced by French diplomacy and propaganda. Moreover, they were conditioned by one’s precise position in a number of key religious debates, most notably the question of Lutheran-Reformed relations. These understandings changed as a result of a number pivotal European events that took place in 1566 and 1567 and the conspiracy theories they inspired.

"Imputed righteousness of Christ" is the belief that the personal righteousness of Jesus Christ is transferred to a sinner. Jesus perfectly obeyed and fulfilled all righteousness (Matthew 3:15).     CONFESSIONAL EUROPE Heinz Schilling (Humboldt-Universitiit zu Berlin) Between 1560 and 1650, Europe's history was shaped by what we call "confession," the modern variant of Christianity. A confession was defined by an explicit statement of doctrine (Lat., confessio), of which the most significant were: for Lutheranism, the Confession of Augsburg (1530) and the Book of Concord (1580); for the Reformed (Calvinist) confession, the Helvetic Confessions (1536, 1566), the Zu­ rich Consensus (1549), and the canons of Dordrecht (1619); for Anglicanism, the Book of Common Prayer (1549) and the Thirty-Nine Articles (1563); and for Catholicism, the Council of Trent's doctrinal canons, especially the "Tridentine Profession of Faith [professio fidei tridentina]" of 1564 and certain papal statements. Based on their re­ spective confessions of faith, the three great confessions (four, includ­ ing Anglicanism) developed into internally coherent and externally ex­ clusive communities distinct in institutions, membership, and belief. Each in its own way, their churches entered into alliances with the early modern states, the coercive power of which enhanced the churches' ability to manage religion, though with results that usually lagged far behind their aims. The confessions also formed a "balance­ of-confessions" connected to the European balance-of-power that was forming in these same decades. 1. THE CONCEPT OF CONFESSIONALIZATION1 Europe housed other, non-confessional religious communities, notably the Anabaptists and other heirs of the radical reformation, and there were always counter-trends to orthodoxies within the confessional churches. Interconfessional contacts and extraconfessional move­ ments nevertheless tended to be limited to private circles, at least until 1640 or so, when the process of deconfessionalization began to give them greater freedom.

In the Introduction, the author argues that the diversity of first-generation evangelical and Protestant teaching on justification has been widely underestimated. Through a close comparison of first- and second- generation confessional statements in the Reformation period, the author seeks to establish that consensus on this issue developed slowly over the course over a period of roughly thirty years, from the adoption of a common rhetoric of dissent aimed at critiquing the regnant Catholic orthopraxy of salvation in the 1520’s and 1530’s, to the emergence of a common theological culture in the 1540’s and beyond.

    CHAPTER 14 The Age of Confessional Divisions, 1550-1618 CHAPTER OUTLINE I. Introduction The late sixteenth century and early seventeenth century was a period characterized by anxiety for the European people. Confessional divisions, inflation and population expansion exacerbated religious and political tensions and provoked civil wars. European states allied themselves with the churches in an attempt to discipline their peoples. A. The Peoples of Early Modern Europe 1. Introduction From the fourteenth century to the sixteenth century, Europe experienced several crises caused by periodic famine, plagues such as the Black death and economic collapse that led to population decline. In the sixteenth century the population and economic life began to rebound. 2. The Population Recovery During the lost sixteenth century (ca. 1480-1640) the population of Europe grew from 60.9 million to 77.9 million. The rate of population growth was much higher in northern Europe than in southern Europe with France having the largest population. The population and economic growth of this period can be explained in part by the change from subsistence to commercial crops, which produced greater availability of food, and fewer children starved. 3. The Prosperous Village The success of commercial agriculture required on the availability of free labor, access of capital investment and markets. Villages like Buia in northeastern Italy made a successful transition from subsistence to commercial crops because serfdom no longer existed in the area allowing people to sell their labor, the form feudal lords were willing to invest their capital in the village and the village had access to the markets of Venice.
