Presbyterian denominations in the United States . 252 vii PREFACE Ever since I graduated with my master’s degree in 1996, I have longed to achieve a Ph.D. Four years ago, the opportunity was finally right in both my family and professional life to begin the journey toward a terminal degree. I was filled with both excitement and trepidation at the prospect of challenging myself in a program of such strong academic rigor which required a discipline of hard work I had not previously experienced. Now, as I near the completion of the Ph.D., I am struck with two emotions: amazement and gratitude. I am amazed at the amount of time and effort it took to finish the requirements of the degree and at the sense of fulfillment finishing such an arduous task has given me. I am grateful for the grace of God to see me through to completion of the Ph.D. journey, which has sharpened my skills as a scholar and pastor. In addition, I am both amazed at and thankful for the number of people who graciously helped me make the dream of achieving a Ph.D. become a reality. To this end, I would be remiss in failing to mention those to whom I am especially indebted for their service to me. In the years leading up to beginning the Ph.D., I had the opportunity to serve on the board of trustees at Southern Seminary and got to know its president, Dr. Albert Mohler. During this time, I became deeply impressed with Southern’s commitment to academic excellence and faithfulness to the Word of God and concluded that Southern should be the institution from which I would seek the Ph.D. I am grateful for the multiple occasions when Dr. Mohler talked with me about Dr. Boice, whom he knew, and his encouragement to me to begin the program. I am grateful to Dr. York and Dr. Vogel, who served as my preaching professors. I greatly enjoyed my time with them in seminars and colloquia. Both men are genuine models of a pastor-scholar and greatly assisted me in the development of my dissertation on Boice. In addition, I will always be thankful for viii my classmates in the program who challenged and encouraged me and will be lifelong friends. As I began to think through a topic for my dissertation, I quickly landed on James Montgomery Boice, whose sermons and books I had read since I first became a pastor in 1992. One of the greatest joys for me in the process of researching and writing the dissertation has been my interaction with Linda Boice, Dr. Boice’s widow. Mrs. Boice welcomed me into her home in Philadelphia and answered my questions for hours on end. She then regularly emailed me and sent me documents pertaining to my research. Her assistance and guidance in accurately writing about the work of Dr. Boice was invaluable to me, and I will always cherish my newfound friendship with this gracious and godly woman. I also want to give special thanks to Dot Boersma, office manager at Tenth Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia. Dot went above and beyond in helping me with my research, even to the point of crawling through the dusty attic of the church looking through its archives on my behalf. Others to whom I owe a debt of gratitude for their substantial help is my administrative assistant, Kathy Bowlan. Kathy meticulously worked to make copies and helped me organize research documents. At the same time, she was a great encouragement to me to begin and finish the Ph.D. program. Sadly, just after I completed the dissertation, Kathy suddenly and unexpectedly passed away. I regret she will not get to see all the hard work she put toward this program come to its final fruition. Another person who helped me immeasurably on the dissertation and seminar research papers is my aunt Debbie Perry. Debbie, a veteran English teacher, spent countless hours proofing my work for grammar and format errors—a “labor of love” for which I will be forever grateful. I would also like to thank my sister-in-law, Laurie Taylor, who was one of my biggest cheerleaders throughout the Ph.D. process. She was always willing to go to the library at Southern to look something up for me and often brought me a Dr. Pepper and candy bar in seminars and comprehensive exams. Additionally, I want to acknowledge my ix classmate Kevin Koslowsky, who helped me navigate the complexities of Presbyterian history and polity as well as Michael Pelter, who for a year helped me to study Latin in preparation for the proficiency exam. My gratitude to the people of Immanuel Baptist Church is difficult to express. They have supported me and loved me through the entire Ph.D., giving me the time to study, research, and write. I cannot imagine a greater church family in which to serve, and I could not have achieved this degree without them. Finally, I want to thank my family. Our children, Zachary, Carly, and Anna, have had to bear the brunt of a father often preoccupied and busy with school. I so appreciate their patience and support of me. Most of all, my wife, Jamy, has been my rock all along. She encouraged me time and again when I was overwhelmed or ready to give up and lovingly, patiently allowed me to focus on school. I will never be able to thank you, Jamy, for your partnership and sacrifice in this journey. This degree is as much yours as it is mine. My hope is that this dissertation might be of use to pastors and others who find themselves in a situation similar to Boice’s. When one finds him or herself belonging to an organization that is jettisoning biblical orthodoxy and historical roots of confessionalism, the proper course of action is difficult to discern. There are times when departing the organization is necessary, but it also may well be that one should stay and work to “strengthen what remains.” The decision is difficult, but action of some form must be taken. The ministry of James Boice provides a helpful example of how one can navigate such difficult times. Todd Fisher Shawnee, Oklahoma December 2018 x CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION James Montgomery Boice (1938-2000) stands as an influential figure in the resurgence of orthodox theology, inerrancy, and expositional preaching among evangelicals in the latter half of the twentieth century. Boice’s influence is manifested through his long-term tenure as a pastor-theologian, author, and leader in evangelical organizations promoting conservative views of the Bible and Christian thought. Boice served as senior pastor of the historic Tenth Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia for thirty-two years (1968 until his death in 2000), and wrote or contributed to over sixty books regarding the Bible and theology, including a systematic theology titled Foundations of the Christian Faith. Twenty-seven of these books are Boice’s expositional commentaries, which serve as a collection of his expository sermons through various books in both the Old and New Testaments.

Battle The final third century of Presbyterianism in America has witnessed the collapse of the mainline Presbyterian churches into liberalism and decline, the emergence of a number of smaller, conservative denominations and agencies, and a renewed interest in Reformed theology throughout the evangelical world. The history of Presbyterianism in the twentieth century is very complex, with certain themes running through the entire century along with new and radical developments. Looking back over the last hundred years from a biblical perspective, one can see three major periods, characterized by different stages of development or decline. The entire period begins with the Presbyterian Church being overwhelmingly conservative, and united theologically, and ends with the same church being largely liberal and fragmented, with several conservative defections. I have chosen two dates during the century as marking these watershed changes in the Presbyterian Church: (1) the issuing of the 1934 mandate requiring J. Gresham Machen and others to support the church’s official Board of Foreign Missions, and (2) the adoption of the Confession of 1967.     THE NICENE CREED [TEXT] The Nicene Creed In the first three centuries, the church found itself in a hostile environment. On the one hand, it grappled with the challenge of relating the language of the gospel, developed in a Hebraic and Jewish-Christian context, to a Graeco-Roman world. On the other hand, it was threatened not only by persecution, but also by ideas that were in conflict with the biblical witness. In A.D. 312, Constantine won control of the Roman Empire in the battle of Milvian Bridge. Attributing his victory to the intervention of Jesus Christ, he elevated Christianity to favored status in the empire. “One God, one Lord, one faith, one church, one empire, one emperor” became his motto. The new emperor soon discovered that “one faith and one church” were fractured by theological disputes, especially conflicting understandings of the nature of Christ, long a point of controversy. Arius, a priest of the church in Alexandria, asserted that the divine Christ, the Word through whom all things have their existence, was created by God before the beginning of time. Therefore, the divinity of Christ was similar to the divinity of God, but not of the same essence. Arius was opposed by the bishop, Alexander, together with his associate and successor Athanasius. They affirmed that the divinity of Christ, the Son, is of the same substance as the divinity of God, the Father. To hold otherwise, they said, was to open the possibility of polytheism, and to imply that knowledge of God in Christ was not final knowledge of God.

Now past that milestone, perhaps we have reached a vantage point where we can turn dispassion• ately to survey that curious but historic route. Seen from its concept of responsible man, we here argue, that route has been a prolonged detour away from the insights of the Reformers. The Westminster Confession remains, of course, the prime con• fessional document of Presbyterians outside the United Church, for instance in the Scots and British parent churches, or with southern cousins in the Presbyterian Church, U.S. Even in the United Church, the Westminster Confession remains in the show• room of creeds. But we have recently seen a breach in the federal scheme so long embraced in Presbyterian confessional statements, a breach that marks the scheme where it yet re• mains officially as a theological anachronism no longer re• garded seriously but to be suffered as historical background. With the hold of federal theology officially broken, we can challenge afresh the assumption that the Calvinism of the Westminster Confession is true to the Reformer himself.

    TMSJ 18/1 (Spring 2007) 3-21 THE NATURE OF TRUTH: POSTMODERN OR PROPOSITIONAL? Robert L. Thomas Professor of New Testament Ernest R. Sandeen laid a foundation for a contemporary concept of truth that was unique among evangelicals with a high view of Scripture. He proposed that the concept of inerrancy based on a literal method of interpretation was late in coming during the Christian era, having its beginning among the Princeton theologians of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. He ruled out their doctrines related to inspiration because they were based on rational thinking which he taught was absent from earlier Christian thought. Subsequent evaluations of Sandeen’s work have disproved his assumption that those doctrines were absent from Christianity prior to the Princeton era. Yet well-known Christian writers have since built on Sandeen’s foundation that excludes rationality and precision from an interpretation of Scripture. The Sandeenists criticize the Princetonians for overreacting in their response to modernism, for their use of literal principles of interpretation, for defining propositional truth derived from the Bible, and for excluding the Holy Spirit’s help in interpretation. All such criticisms have proven to be without foundation. The Princetonians were not without fault, but their utilization of common sense in biblical interpretation was their strong virtue. Unfortunately, even the Journal of the inerrantist Evangelical Theological Society has promoted some of the same errors as Sandeen. The divine element in inspiration is a guarantee of the rationality and precision of Scripture, because God, the ultimate author of Scripture, is quite rational and precise, as proven by Scripture itself.

One of the most perplexing problems for the teacher of God's Word is to explain the relationship between the doctrine of election and the doctrine of salvation by grace. These two doctrines are widely debated by conservative Christians who divide themselves into two opposing camps, the "Calvinists" and the "Arminians." To understand the problem let us look at the various positions held, the terms used, a brief history of the matter, and then present a biblical solution that correctly addresses the issue and avoids the unbiblical extremes of both the Calvinists and the Arminians. Introduction to Calvinism John Calvin, the Swiss reformer (1509-1564) a theologian, drafted the system of Soteriology (study of salvation) that bears his name. The term "Calvinism" refers to doctrines and practices that stemmed from the works of John Calvin. The tenants of modern Calvinism are based on the works of Calvin that have been expanded by his followers. These beliefs became the distinguishing characteristics of the Reformed churches and some Baptists. Simply stated, this view claims that God predestined or elected some to be saved and others to be lost. Those elected to salvation are decreed by God to receive salvation and cannot "resist God's grace." However, those that God elected to be lost are born condemned eternally to the Lake of Fie and He will not allow them be saved.

This introductory article to the entire theme issue of TMSJ sets forth the context of the question of whether hell involves conscious torment forever in Gehenna for unbelievers or their annihilation after the final judgment. It discusses historical, philosophical, lexical, contextual, and theological issues that prove crucial to reaching a definitive biblical conclusion. In the end, hell is a conscious, personal torment forever; it is not “just for awhile” before annihilation after the final judgment (conditional immortality) nor is its final retribution “never” (universalism). * * * * * A few noted evangelicals such as Clark Pinnock,1 John Stott,2 and John Wenham3 have in recent years challenged the doctrine of eternal torment forever in hell as God’s final judgment on all unbelievers. James Hunter, in his landmark “sociological interpretation” of evangelicalism, notes that “. it is clear that there is a measurable degree of uneasiness within this generation of Evangelicals with the notion of an eternal damnation.”4 The 1989 evangelical doctrinal caucus “Evangelical Affirmations” surprisingly debated this issue. “Strong disagreements did surface over the position of annihilationism, a view that holds that unsaved souls 1Clark H.
