The Idea of Medieval Heresy in Early Modern France
The Idea of Medieval Heresy in Early Modern France Bethany Hume PhD University of York History September 2019 2 Abstract This thesis responds to the historiographical focus on the trope of the Albigensians and Waldensians within sixteenth-century confessional polemic. It supports a shift away from the consideration of medieval heresy in early modern historical writing merely as literary topoi of the French Wars of Religion. Instead, it argues for a more detailed examination of the medieval heretical and inquisitorial sources used within seventeenth-century French intellectual culture and religious polemic. It does this by examining the context of the Doat Commission (1663-1670), which transcribed a collection of inquisition registers from Languedoc, 1235-44. Jean de Doat (c.1600-1683), President of the Chambre des Comptes of the parlement of Pau from 1646, was charged by royal commission to the south of France to copy documents of interest to the Crown. This thesis aims to explore the Doat Commission within the wider context of ideas on medieval heresy in seventeenth-century France. The periodization “medieval” is extremely broad and incorporates many forms of heresy throughout Europe. As such, the scope of this thesis surveys how thirteenth-century heretics, namely the Albigensians and Waldensians, were portrayed in historical narrative in the 1600s. The field of study that this thesis hopes to contribute to includes the growth of historical interest in medieval heresy and its repression, and the search for original sources by seventeenth-century savants. By exploring the ideas of medieval heresy espoused by different intellectual networks it becomes clear that early modern European thought on medieval heresy informed antiquarianism, historical writing, and ideas of justice and persecution, as well as shaping confessional identity. -
The Historical Denial of the Free Offer
The Historical Denial of the Free Offer Modern Calvinist leaders who teach the free offer usually claim that they have support from historic Reformed theology. This is false. They frequently claim that Calvin supports their position and that the chief Reformed standards justify their claims. All this is false also. Historic Calvinism, both in its accepted standards and as expressed by its main theologians, denies the free offer; indeed, it would recognise the teaching of modern free offer preachers as Amyraldism, and condemn it as error. Now such is the lack of knowledge on these matters amongst today’s churchgoers that my claims here must be evidenced. I am happy to comply with this to demonstrate the truth. This paper is written to show what the foremost Reformed standards and theologians teach regarding the free offer. What is the free offer? The free offer is the teaching that: 1. God has a good intent to reprobates. 2. God loves all men without exception. 3. God desires, and even wills, the salvation of all men. 4. God gives grace to all men to some degree. To this the following is at least implied: 1. The atonement of Christ is universal in scope; he died for all. 2. Conversion is conditioned upon the will of the sinner. The Arminian basis of this theology is plain to see. Where does this come from? This teaching was once restricted to those who followed the school of Moses Amyraut (or Amyrald, 1596-1664) who sought to unite the universalism of Lutherans with the sovereign particularity of Calvinists. -

The Ideology All rights reserved. © Conclusion INTRODUCTION1 Understanding the movement and the ideology la- belled Calvinism is a rather challenging topic. But none- theless it is an important topic to tackle. As important as any part of such an endeavour is deciding on a “plan of attack” in getting into the topic. The movement covered by this label “Calvinism” has spread out its tentacles all over the place and in many different, sometimes in conflicting directions. The logical starting place is with the person whose name has been attached to the label, although I’m quite sure he would be most uncomfortable with most of the content bearing his name.2 After exploring the history of John Calvin, we will take a look at a few of the more influential interpreters of Calvin over the subsequent centuries into the present day. This will open the door to attempt to explain the ideology of Calvinism with some of the distinctive terms and concepts associated exclusively with it. I. The Persons From the digging into the history of Calvinism, I have discovered one clear fact: Calvinism is a religious thinking in the 1500s of Switzerland when he lived and movement that goes well beyond John Calvin, in some worked. -

Germany and the Coming of the French Wars of Religion: Confession, Identity, and Transnational Relations Jonas A. M. van Tol Doctor of Philosophy University of York History February 2016 Abstract From its inception, the French Wars of Religion was a European phenomenon. The internationality of the conflict is most clearly illustrated by the Protestant princes who engaged militarily in France between 1567 and 1569. Due to the historiographical convention of approaching the French Wars of Religion as a national event, studied almost entirely separate from the history of the German Reformation, its transnational dimension has largely been ignored or misinterpreted. Using ten German Protestant princes as a case study, this thesis investigates the variety of factors that shaped German understandings of the French Wars of Religion and by extension German involvement in France. The princes’ rich and international network of correspondence together with the many German-language pamphlets about the Wars in France provide an insight into the ways in which the conflict was explained, debated, and interpreted. Applying a transnational interpretive framework, this thesis unravels the complex interplay between the personal, local, national, and international influences that together formed an individual’s understanding of the Wars of Religion. These interpretations were rooted in the longstanding personal and cultural connections between France and the Rhineland and strongly influenced by French diplomacy and propaganda. Moreover, they were conditioned by one’s precise position in a number of key religious debates, most notably the question of Lutheran-Reformed relations. These understandings changed as a result of a number pivotal European events that took place in 1566 and 1567 and the conspiracy theories they inspired. -

Puritan Responses to Antinomianism in the Context of Reformed Covenant Theology: 1630 – 1696 Submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy 2013 Christopher Earl Caughey 1 Summary This thesis analyzes the way in which six seventeenth-century puritans from both sides of the Atlantic responded to antinomians—those accused of rejecting divine law—and the methods these six puritans used in their responses. In his book Blown by the Spirit (2004), David Como has divided seventeenth-century antinomians into two camps: “inherentists/perfectionists” and “imputationists.” The former were mystical and held esoteric beliefs, while the latter were more theological—even citing Martin Luther in their support. While this thesis does not focus on either group of antinomians, the six puritans whose microhistories are studied tended to focus their response on the imputationists. T.D. Bozeman has argued in The Precisianist Strain (2004) that a strict moralism and rigorous pietism permeated the puritan community and provoked the imputationists to an “antinomian backlash.” This thesis will employ the microhistories of John Cotton, Edward Fisher, John Owen, John Bunyan, Samuel Petto and Herman Witsius in an analysis of the controversy surrounding the antinomian backlash. Part of what makes these six figures so helpful in this analysis is their liminal status within the puritan community. Cotton, Owen and Petto were Independents and Bunyan was a Baptist—all outside the communions which tended to be in powerful positions like the Presbyterians and the Anglicans. Fisher probably held membership, but not office, in a Presbyterian church. Finally, Witsius was a minister in the Dutch Reformed Church and became an outside voice in the controversy only because a group of English puritans asked him to mediate their own conflict over antinomianism. -

REVIEWS Reformed Theology: Identity and Ecumenicity Wallace M. Alston Jr and Michael Welker (eds) Eerdmans, Grand Rapids, 2003; 449pp., £ 26.87; ISBN 0 8028 4776 5 It is encouraging to see a major new book on the theme of reformed theology and its place in the church and the world. This scholarly volume arose out of a consultation held in Heidelberg in 1999. The twenty-eight essays are divided into five sections which focus in turn on: reformed identity in historical context and contextual awareness, the shaping of reformed ecclesiology, reformed pneumatology, the place of reformed theology in ecumenical conversation and, finally, ethical profiles of reformed theology. In their introduction, the editors state that the book is an attempt to represent and explore the 'rich, structured pluralism... in reformed theology today' (p. x). The book's first essay in discussing the identity of reformed theology helpfully sets out the book's definition of what reformed theology is. Yung Han Kim identifies the foundations of reformed theology as sola scriptura and solus Christus. All reformed Christians will be happy to see these foundations, but will be less happy with some of the definitions used. For example, in discussing the authority of Scripture we are told that We must have biblically realistic thinking that does not evaluate critically but instead accommodates what the scripture is saying. We who are listening to and interpreting the Word of God can interpret it in diverse ways (p. 9, 10). Many of the essays that follow use a similar methodology and, as a result, serious questions must be asked as to just how faithful to the reformed tradition this book really is. -
