Signed:_________________________________________________________ Date:______5th June 2018 ________________________________________ Dave Hook BA PGCert FHEA Edinburgh i Abstract The published works that form the basis of this PhD are a selection of hip-hop songs written over a period of six years between 2010 and 2015. The lyrics for these pieces are all written by the author and performed with hip-hop group Stanley Odd. The songs have been recorded and commercially released by a number of independent record labels (Circular Records, Handsome Tramp Records and A Modern Way Recordings) with worldwide digital distribution licensed to Fine Tunes, and physical sales through Proper Music Distribution. Considering the poetics of Scottish hip-hop, the accompanying critical reflection is an autoethnographic study, focused on rap lyricism, identity and performance. The significance of the writing lies in how the pieces collectively explore notions of identity, ‘outsiderdom’, politics and society in a Scottish context. Further to this, the pieces are noteworthy in their interpretation of US hip-hop frameworks and structures, adapted and reworked through Scottish culture, dialect and perspective. -

The Russian hip hop scene is extremely racist. It’s being led by racists like @sdthaking and i1official (@Talib Kweli 2020)1 The above tweet was posted at the end of February 2020 in the middle of a heated Twitter controversy between famous us rapper Talib Kweli and the Russian hip-hop community, in which he described the en- tire Russian rap scene as racist, Nazi and state sponsored.2 Thе scandal quickly spread to other social media platforms and got extensive cover- age online and even on the official Russian tv channels. This style of hip-hop, known as conscious hip-hop, is usually juxtaposed with gangsta rap. -

First published 2021 2021 Adam de Paor-Evans Cover graff by Remser Remser started writing in 1997 after seeing dubs and pieces by Sceo, Fixer, Teach, and G-Sane at the M5 pillar spot in Exeter. His school bus used to loop around Sannerville Way and the pieces could be seen from the road as well as the train. A couple of years prior to this, Remser’s mum randomly bought him a copy of Spraycan Art, and he knew straight away that it was something he wanted to be part of. In early 2000 he moved to London and hooked up with the DNK/CWR boys, they were way better than him and super-active but this experience pushed him to develop his style and learn about all aspects of graffiti writing. Anastasia Afonina ‘The Popular Culture of Criminality’ VAV3, Gerrit Rietveld Academie As fashion evolved throughout times, we moved from long gowns into mini skirts in less than a century. At the beginning of 2000s we were hypnotized by the Paris Hilton’s glamor- ous pink and disgusted by the unsatisfactory living conditions of people labeled as a ‘lower class’. From what I see we can develop even faster. We can be even more radical. My research is about a modern popular culture and, in particular, the active exploitation of criminal aesthetics in the different forms of art, such as music, fashion, cinema, etc. My curi- osity is built around an observation that just recently people that we would call ‘upper-middle class’ were often trying to ignore the presence of some particular urban areas known as ‘ghetto’ and its unsatisfactory social conditions that meanwhile developed in its individual culture. This lifestyle, fashion, music, slang, etc, was not highly appreciated by the other so- cial classes. Yet now, what was considered as ‘bad taste’ ten years ago has a huge impact on contemporary art and media. Therefore, I am curious about the reason of a rapidly growing interest and the frequent use of the ghetto culture that became the new popular culture nowadays. I find it interesting, how those two different things - propaganda and a popular culture - can be so interconnected the way they affect each other. -

Tejeda 1 Camille Tejeda The Significance of Grime in Black British Culture In today’s global society, cities and urban metropolitan areas are hubs of diversity. People from entirely different backgrounds and nationalities living in these areas all grow to adopt similar traits and habits, creating cities that are as unified in culture as they are vastly different. Busy streets and herd mentalities are responsible for forming shared personalities among inhabitants that are unique to each city. Looming grey clouds and stressful workdays, for instance, influence the dismissive personality indicative of a typical Londoner. When the workday comes to a close, pubs in London are seen overflowing with patrons enjoying and sharing drinks with their friends. Bars and clubs late at night can be heard pumping the rhythms of electronic, hip hop, and grime music into the veins of London’s population; the heartbeat of the young British city. Though diverse in individual heritage, London remains unified in culture—particularly, the engagement in and consumption of Black British music and street culture. As Black British hip hop and grime music, along with the culture associated with it, has begun to infiltrate the mainstream, the historical value of the art form has been diminished into pure entertainment by several consumers. However, it remains increasingly important to understand the significance of Black British music as a tactic in ensuring cultural survival. More than simply an outlet for art and entertainment, the cultural form has roots in the dense, complex history of the African diaspora in both Britain and the United States. Thus, there is value in analyzing the creation and expansion of hip hop and grime music, coupled with the emerging Tejeda 2 lifestyle and customs associated with it, as a way of keeping Black British history alive. -
