Russian Rap in the Era of Vladimir Putin
CHAPTER 3 RUS SIAN RAP IN THE ERA OF VLADIMIR PUTIN Philip Ewell T has always held a special place in the hearts of Rus sians. From the poetry recitations by Evgeny Evtushenko in the s that lled stadiums to the inspired lyr ics of Rus sian bards like Vladimir Vysotsky, Rus sians have sought not only beauty but also repose in artistic literary forms. is is not sur- prising given Rus sia’s troubled po liti cal history over the centuries, which reached its height in the twentieth century with the repressive Soviet era. Countless vol- umes have been written over the years on censorship in the USSR and on the ensuing balancing act that Soviet artists endured at the hands of the authorities. at Soviet and post- Soviet Rus sian rappers felt that same repression is not in doubt. What sets rap, as a genre, apart from other literary forms in Rus sia is its place in time: It really took hold only in the early s, immediately aer the fall of the Soviet Union, so one cannot speak of rap, as a genre, in uencing po liti cal events in the USSR. ough one could argue that the rst rap in Rus sia was “Rap” from by the group Chas Pik, an unabashed rip- o of e Sugarhill Gang’s “Rapper’s Delight” from — widely recognized as the rst commercial rap hit ever—it was not until the s that Rus sian rappers and rap groups such as Bog- dan Titomir, Liki MC, Bad Balance, and Mal’chishnik became widely known in the former Soviet Union and, with them, the rap genre itself. -
Anastasia Afonina 'The Popular Culture of Criminality' VAV3, Gerrit
Anastasia Afonina ‘The Popular Culture of Criminality’ VAV3, Gerrit Rietveld Academie As fashion evolved throughout times, we moved from long gowns into mini skirts in less than a century. At the beginning of 2000s we were hypnotized by the Paris Hilton’s glamor- ous pink and disgusted by the unsatisfactory living conditions of people labeled as a ‘lower class’. From what I see we can develop even faster. We can be even more radical. My research is about a modern popular culture and, in particular, the active exploitation of criminal aesthetics in the different forms of art, such as music, fashion, cinema, etc. My curi- osity is built around an observation that just recently people that we would call ‘upper-middle class’ were often trying to ignore the presence of some particular urban areas known as ‘ghetto’ and its unsatisfactory social conditions that meanwhile developed in its individual culture. This lifestyle, fashion, music, slang, etc, was not highly appreciated by the other so- cial classes. Yet now, what was considered as ‘bad taste’ ten years ago has a huge impact on contemporary art and media. Therefore, I am curious about the reason of a rapidly growing interest and the frequent use of the ghetto culture that became the new popular culture nowadays. Estonian rapper Tommy Cash In addition to it, I would also like to get to know more about its connection with political and social propaganda. I find it interesting, how those two different things - propaganda and a popular culture - can be so interconnected the way they affect each other. -
Hip-Hop and Spoken Word Poetry in Academic Libraries 19.2
FEATURE: GLOBAL PERSPECTIVES Front and Center: Hip-Hop and Spoken Word Poetry in Academic Libraries 19.2. Del Williams and Mark Stover portal abstract: This feature describes the efforts of the Oviatt Library at California State University, Northridge to offer programming featuring hip-hop and spoken word poetry. These events, begun in 2016, offer genres relevant to the university’s diverse and global enrollment.publication, Though not traditional library presentations, they recognize the wide appeal of hip-hopfor and the importance of oral traditions to some cultures while providing a platform for the participants to express their diverse views and experiences. t is almost a cliché in the United States, andaccepted indeed throughout the world, that universities grow more and more diverse. Almost every institution of higher learning has one or more sections of itsand mission and values statements that speak Iapprovingly and aspirationally about di- versity and inclusion. Many universities In seeking to engage library users, have directives calling for the representaedited,- tion of varied cultures among students, we must ask ourselves if tradition- staff, and faculty. Part ofcopy this diversity is al library programming continues the growing emphasis on and enrollment of international students, due to a number to be appealing and relevant to of factors, including the globalization them. of higher education. As we invite more individuals reviewed, from other backgrounds into our space, we have a responsibility to make room for a variety of cultural expressions. In planningpeer events for students, library faculty and administrators should first know somethingis about who the students are and where their interests lie. -

Not without purpose did the Lord Put me to witness much for many years And educate me in the love of books. One day some indefatigable monk Will find my conscientious, unsigned work; Like me, he will light up his ikon-lamp And, shaking from the scroll the age-old dust, He will transcribe these tales in all their truth.” -Alexander Pushkin “Religion is the opiate of the masses.” -Karl Marx As a new day dawns in Moscow, cathedral bells toll from Gorky Park to Red Square. After years of religious repression during the communist rule of Russia, believers can now congregate at the recently reconstructed Russian Orthodox Cathedral of Christ the Savior. They gather under the watchful gaze of gilded icons–an ordinary sight in 2008 that would have been inconceivable 20 years ago when images venerating Stalin were more common than saintly representations. The service inside the Cathedral of Christ the Savior, however, is no ordinary event. High ranking political officials, clergy, and laypeople alike have gathered to commemorate the 1020th anniversary of the Baptism of Rus when, in 988AD, Prince Vladimir converted the whole of Russia to Eastern Orthodox Christianity. -

Birds of Paradise Theatre Company Annual Report 2015
Birds of Paradise Theatre Company Annual Report 2015 - 2016 Organisational Staffing The staff team of Garry Robson, Robert Softley Gale and Shona Rattray had been leading the organisation since November 2013. In July of 2015 Shona left the company to pursue exciting freelance opportunities and so Garry and Robert became joint Artistic Directors and Chief Executive Officers. Following a period of internal review, we advertised for a new Access & Finance Administrator. We were delighted to appoint Karen Forbes to this role in November 2015. Rotation of Board Members Our previous Chair, Liam Sinclair, resigned from our Board of Directors in July 2015 after giving nine great years of service to the company. Marianne Maxwell and Graham Main, two excellent co-chairs, oversaw the BOP Board through a transitional period whilst new members and a new chair are being recruited. Long time treasurer Simon Hodgson remained on the board with Marianne and Graham. Page 2 of 7 Projects Looking 4 Talent Looking 4 Talent saw BOP travel across the country searching for emerging deaf and disabled talent, auditioning over 50 people. A number of those auditioned were then invited to a day-long audition workshop at Scottish Youth Theatre and subsequently six people were invited to take part in L4T Intensive, a two-week development process in October held with the support of Summerhall, Edinburgh. We worked with this group on developing a new version of a seminal show in the history of disability art ‘The Last Freakshow’ by Mike Kenny. This was performed to an enthusiastic full house at Summerhall on Friday 16th October. -

You were born in Russia, spent your teenage years in America then moved back to Moscow as an adult. Do you feel more Russian or American? It doesn't really work that way. But when you have emigrated as often as I have, you learn the benefits of being an outsider. I am very comfortable not belonging. I find it extremely beneficial to my work as a journalist to be highly attuned to this culture yet at the same time hovering outside of it. I do sometimes bristle at this idea people have that my having been born in Russia qualifies me to talk about Donald Trump. I'd rather people said 25 years of studying totalitarianism qualifies me to talk about Donald Trump.
