Čiurlionis National Museum of Art, Kaunas, Lithuania 35 COLLECTING ART IN THE TURMOIL OF WAR: LITHUANIA IN 1939–1944 COLLECTING ART IN THE TURMOIL OF WAR: LITHUANIA IN 1939–1944 IN LITHUANIA WAR: OF TURMOIL THE IN ART COLLECTING Summary. The article deals with the growth of the art collections of the Lithuanian national and municipal museums during WWII, a period traditionally seen as particularly unfavourable for cultural activities. During this period, the dynamics of Lithuanian museum art collections were maintained by two main sources. The first was caused by nationalist politics, or, more precisely, one of its priorities to support Lithuanian art by acquiring artworks from contemporaries. The exception to this strategy is the attention given to the multicultural art scene of Vilnius, partly Jewish, but especially Polish art, which led to the purchase of Polish artists’ works for the Vilnius Municipal Museum and the Vytautas the Great Museum of Culture in Kaunas, which had the status of a national art collection. The second important source was the nationalisation of private property during the Soviet occupation of 1940–1941. This process enabled the Lithuanian museums to enrich their collections with valuable objets d’art first of all, but also with paintings, sculptures and graphic prints. Due to the nationalisation of manor property, the collections of provincial museums, primarily Šiauliai Aušra and Samogitian Museum Alka in Telšiai, significantly increased.

Deeper analysis of the environs of Tverai borough (Rietavas Municipality) revealed a number of features indicative of landscape memory power. The exceptional features of this locality such as, for example, a large-scale wave-shaped swell at the bottom of the hill ridge (the seat of the borough) indicate the correlation between the archaeological monuments and intensity of soil cover anthropogenization. The repetition of the name of the Pilsupis Stream in two places of this locality prompted to take a closer look at its landscape and to go deeper into the historical background. Tverai is one of the Lithuanian localities mentioned in the oldest historical sources: in 1251, it is mentioned as Tvirimet town of Samogitian Duke Vykintas and since 1289, it has been referred to as the Tverai Land. The article contains information about the specific features of the Tverai landscape, which coincidentally or as regularity is in close correlation with the historical events. A hypothesis is presented as to the possible location of the ancient Tverai town. The structure of the fields is discussed as one of the main evidences of landscape memory. References 69. Figs 10. PYRGOS 4 Pyrgos, the town of the ancient perfumes… Pyrgos village is located 13 km east of Limassol, the second biggest city of Cyprus. The village is built at an average altitude of 85 meters. The altitude presents a noticeable increase from the settlement to the north and near its north administrative boundaries it reaches 488 meters. In the south of the settlement the altitude steadily decreases and comes down to about 50 meters. Further south the altitude decreases steadily up to the sea. History The village existed during the Medieval times under the exact same name. In old maps it is marked under the name Pirgo and Birgo. The name of the village originated from the fact that there was a tower in the region, apparently one of the Byzantine years. A tower must have existed also during the Frank domination era, in the sense of a central building of a family of nobles, to which the village -as a feud -belonged to.

    The Lithuanian Jewish Community of Telšiai By Philip S. Shapiro1 Introduction This work had its genesis in an initiative of the “Alka” Samogitian Museum, which has undertaken projects to recover for Lithuanians the true history of the Jews who lived side-by-side with their ancestors. Several years ago, the Museum received a copy of the 500-plus-page “yizkor” (memorial) book for the Jewish community of Telšiai,2 which was printed in 1984.3 The yizkor book is a collection of facts and personal memories of those who had lived in Telšiai before or at the beginning of the Second World War. Most of the articles are written in Hebrew or Yiddish, but the Museum was determined to unlock the information that the book contained. Without any external prompting, the Museum embarked upon an ambitious project to create a Lithuanian version of The Telshe Book. As part of that project, the Museum organized this conference to discuss The Telshe Book and the Jewish community of Telšiai. This project is of great importance to Lithuania. Since Jews constituted about half of the population of most towns in provincial Lithuania in the 19th Century, a Lithuanian translation of the book will not only give Lithuanian readers a view of Jewish life in Telšiai but also a better knowledge of the town’s history, which is our common heritage. The first part of this article discusses my grandfather, Dov Ber Shapiro, who was born in 1883 in Kamajai, in the Rokiškis region, and attended the Telshe Yeshiva before emigrating in 1903 to the United States, where he was known as “Benjamin” Shapiro.

    Translation from the Lithuanian 1 EIA Summary The proposed economic activity (hereinafter referred to as the PEA) - construction of the Klaipėda – Kuršėnai gas transmission pipeline - has been included into the list of activities presented in Annex 1 to the Law on Environmental Impact Assessment of the Proposed Economic Activity that are subject to an environmental impact assessment. Environmental impact assessment (hereinafter - the EIA) procedures are carried out in accordance with Law on Environmental Impact Assessment of the Proposed Economic Activity (hereinafter the Law on EIA) (Official Gazette, 1996, No. 82-1965; 2000, No. 39-1092; 2005, No. 84-3105) and other applicable laws of the Republic of Lithuania. The main goal of the project of the Klaipėda – Kuršėnai gas transmission pipeline is to create sufficient capacities for transporting natural gas from the LNG terminal in Klaipėda to consumers in Lithuania and other Baltic countries (Latvia and Estonia), thus creating a possibility for the Baltic market participants to diversify the sources of gas supply increasing possibilities for liquefied natural gas import through the terminal and enhancing market competitiveness. The project “Klaipėda – Kuršėnai gas transmission pipeline“ was declared an economic project of national importance by Resolution No. 1195 of the Government of the Republic of Lithuania of 11 December 2013. The project will be implemented by the Lithuanian natural gas transmission system operator AB Amber Grid.
