RESIDENTIAL REAL ESTATE MARKET COMMENTARY LITHUANIA / H1 2019 The Lithuanian residential property market, growing for the ninth year in a NUMBER OF TRANSACTIONS IN LITHUANIA row, is showing no surprises this year – the general market indicators 3.500 demonstrate as always that the housing market has been experiencing its 3.000 heyday over the last decade. PYRGOS 4 Pyrgos, the town of the ancient perfumes… Pyrgos village is located 13 km east of Limassol, the second biggest city of Cyprus. The village is built at an average altitude of 85 meters. The altitude presents a noticeable increase from the settlement to the north and near its north administrative boundaries it reaches 488 meters. In the south of the settlement the altitude steadily decreases and comes down to about 50 meters. Further south the altitude decreases steadily up to the sea. History The village existed during the Medieval times under the exact same name. In old maps it is marked under the name Pirgo and Birgo. The name of the village originated from the fact that there was a tower in the region, apparently one of the Byzantine years. A tower must have existed also during the Frank domination era, in the sense of a central building of a family of nobles, to which the village -as a feud -belonged to. -

The Lithuanian Jewish Community of Telšiai By Philip S. Shapiro1 Introduction This work had its genesis in an initiative of the “Alka” Samogitian Museum, which has undertaken projects to recover for Lithuanians the true history of the Jews who lived side-by-side with their ancestors. Several years ago, the Museum received a copy of the 500-plus-page “yizkor” (memorial) book for the Jewish community of Telšiai,2 which was printed in 1984.3 The yizkor book is a collection of facts and personal memories of those who had lived in Telšiai before or at the beginning of the Second World War. Most of the articles are written in Hebrew or Yiddish, but the Museum was determined to unlock the information that the book contained. Without any external prompting, the Museum embarked upon an ambitious project to create a Lithuanian version of The Telshe Book. As part of that project, the Museum organized this conference to discuss The Telshe Book and the Jewish community of Telšiai. This project is of great importance to Lithuania. Since Jews constituted about half of the population of most towns in provincial Lithuania in the 19th Century, a Lithuanian translation of the book will not only give Lithuanian readers a view of Jewish life in Telšiai but also a better knowledge of the town’s history, which is our common heritage. The first part of this article discusses my grandfather, Dov Ber Shapiro, who was born in 1883 in Kamajai, in the Rokiškis region, and attended the Telshe Yeshiva before emigrating in 1903 to the United States, where he was known as “Benjamin” Shapiro. -
Schools of Estonian Graphic Art in Journalism in the 1930S
SCHOOLS OF ESTONIAN GRAPHIC ART IN JOURNALISM IN THE 1930S Merle Talvik Abstract: The basis for the development and spread of graphic design in the 1920s and 30s in Estonia was the rapid progress of the country’s economy and commerce. The rise in the number of publications led to a greater need for designers. The need for local staff arose in all fields of applied graphics. In the 1930s, graphic artists were trained at two professional art schools – the State Applied Art School (Riigi Kunsttööstuskool) in Tallinn and the Higher Art School (Kõrgem Kunstikool) Pallas in Tartu. The present article focuses on the analyses of the creative work of the graphic artists of both schools, trying to mark the differences and similarities. The State Applied Art School was established in 1914. In 1920, Günther Reindorff started working as a drawing teacher. His teaching methods and the distinguished style of his creative work became an inspiration for an entire generation of Estonian graphic designers. The three well-known students and followers of G. Reindorff were Johann Naha, Paul Luhtein and Hugo Lepik. The teachers and students of the State Applied Art School shaped greatly the appearance of magazines printed in Tallinn. Of modern art movements, art deco found most followers. National ornament became a source for creative work. Distinct composition and beautifully designed legible script are also the features that resulted from the systematic education of the State School of Applied Art. The curriculum of the Higher Art School Pallas, established in 1919, was based on western European art experience. -

326 Dark Times: Art and Artists of Vilnius in 1939–1941 Giedrė Jankevičiūtė Vilnius Academy of Arts Maironio St. 6, LT-01124 Vilnius e-mail: [email protected] The aim of this paper is to discuss and reconstruct in general fe- atures the reality of the Vilnius artistic community from late autumn 1939 to June 1941. This period of less than two years significantly changed the configuration of the artistic community of the city, the system of institutions shaping the art scene as well as the artistic goals. It also brought forth new names and inspired new images. These changes were above all determined by political circumstances: the war that broke out in Poland on 1 September 1939; the ceding of Vilnius and the Vilnius region to Lithuania; two Soviet occupations: in the autumn of 1939 and June 1940, and the subsequent Nazi occupation a year later. The influence of politics on the art scene and the life of artists has been explored in institutional and other aspects by both Lithuanian and Polish art historians, but the big picture is not yet complete, and the general narrative is still under construction. A further aim of this paper is to highlight some elements that have not received sufficient atten- tion in historiography and that are necessary for the reconstruction of the whole. Some facts of cooperation or its absence among artists of various ethnicities are presented, and the question is raised on the extent to which these different groups were affected by Sovietisation, and what impact this fragmentation had on the city’s art scene. -

Environmental Impact Assessment of the Proposed Economic Activity That Are Subject to an Environmental Impact Assessment
Translation from the Lithuanian 1 EIA Summary The proposed economic activity (hereinafter referred to as the PEA) - construction of the Klaipėda – Kuršėnai gas transmission pipeline - has been included into the list of activities presented in Annex 1 to the Law on Environmental Impact Assessment of the Proposed Economic Activity that are subject to an environmental impact assessment. Environmental impact assessment (hereinafter - the EIA) procedures are carried out in accordance with Law on Environmental Impact Assessment of the Proposed Economic Activity (hereinafter the Law on EIA) (Official Gazette, 1996, No. 82-1965; 2000, No. 39-1092; 2005, No. 84-3105) and other applicable laws of the Republic of Lithuania. The main goal of the project of the Klaipėda – Kuršėnai gas transmission pipeline is to create sufficient capacities for transporting natural gas from the LNG terminal in Klaipėda to consumers in Lithuania and other Baltic countries (Latvia and Estonia), thus creating a possibility for the Baltic market participants to diversify the sources of gas supply increasing possibilities for liquefied natural gas import through the terminal and enhancing market competitiveness. The project “Klaipėda – Kuršėnai gas transmission pipeline“ was declared an economic project of national importance by Resolution No. 1195 of the Government of the Republic of Lithuania of 11 December 2013. The project will be implemented by the Lithuanian natural gas transmission system operator AB Amber Grid.
