The piece was made for an international jewellery competition in Finland, called ‘’The Spirit of stone’’, where it won third prize. The idea of the piece was to depict Estonian national character. From the first sight, Estonians seem as cold and distant people who take effort and time to get along with, but once you get passed that, the friendships are forever. Same as working with cold granite- it take time to hold it in your hand until it warms up, but when it does it stays warm for a long time. Madonna x 2. Lost Causes – David Clarke & Jaydan Moore Two artists are placed together in a conversation of comparison and contrast. While the starting point of both is often similar- finding discarded silver and altering to new effect... yet with very different concepts behind them, the results are strikingly different. In the words of Independent Curator Glenn Adamson: David Clarke has long been the key figure in British smithing, at least at its avant garde extremity. Equal parts bad boy and consummate master, his use of found objects and unexpected materials like sugar and salt inverts expectations, while his imagery incisively explores the domain of everyday domesticity. This exhibition places his work alongside that of Jaydan Moore, a young American smith whose interests and techniques bear close comparison to Clarke's but also strike out into new territory. Moore is more lyrical and draftsman-like in his approach; his works often feel like intuitive drawings, despite the hard craft that went into their making. This exhibition at the always - adventurous Ornamentum Gallery is a golden opportunity to see two of the leading lights of this demanding medium side by side.

Fifty-eight artists from eighteen countries presented their own, widely varying, individual solutions to this subject as documented in the present book. The jewellery shown here is "black" on the one hand because dark or black materials such as jet, ebony or black diamonds have been used to make it. But it is also "black" in the figurative sense, for example in the way it deals with existential problems. Pieces such as Konrad Mehus' gold Valium-dispenser brooch, Tanel Veenre's "Guilty Conscience" or Francis Willemstijn's "The Widow" are overtly about human anxieties, cares and crises. A "Dark Painting" by Tore Svensson, on the other hand, is just what the title says: a black painting that can be worn as a brooch. The approaches taken by these artists to the "black" theme documents the avant-garde stance represented in their art works: jewellery is no longer viewed as merely decorative or a status symbol whose value depends solely on the material of which it is made.
