1244 Northwood is held by John Rumyn owing 1/10 knight’s service to John Fitz Alan, Earl of Arundel. The Earl assigns the service to Roger de Somery and his wife Nichola (a coheir of Hugh d’Aubigny 5th Earl of Arundel).

1264-1267 Second Barons War

Prior to 1300 Northwood passes to John Romyn. Edward I 1272-1307 Edward II 1307-27 Unknown Northwood passes to William Romyn.

1314 William dies leaving a son and heir Henry, who is still an

infant. Edward III 1327-77 1346 Henry settles Northwood on himself and his wife Joan.

1349 Henry dies leaving a son and heir Edmund, who is aged 8. Edmund dies shortly after, probably of the Black Death. Northwood reverts to the overlord Richard Fitz Alan, 3rd Earl of Arundel.

1375 Richard is Admiral of the Western Fleet. In this role he destroys the harbour of Roscoff.

1376 Richard dies leaving a son and heir also Richard.

1377 Richard carries the crown at King Richard’s coronation. He is Richard II 1377-1399 appointed Admiral of the North and the West.

1386 Richard is closely aligned to Thomas, of Gloucester (uncle of King Richard) who opposes King Richard’s desire for peace with France. A power struggle ensues and Thomas forces King Richard to name himself and Richard to the King’s Council (for all intents and purposes this is a Regency Council for the King). King Richard names Richard as Admiral of England and appoints him as a Knight of the Garter.

1387 Sir Richard defeats a Franco-Spanish-Flemish fleet off Margate, Kent. King Richard dismisses Sir Richard and Thomas from the Council. They are summoned by the King to attend a meeting. They decline, raise troops and defeat the new Council at Radcot Bridge and the new Council are taken prisoner.

1388 Sir Richard is appointed Governor of Brest.

1394 Sir Richard is once again a member of the King’s Council although there is obvious tension with the King. Sir Richard arrives late for the queen’s funeral. King Richard flies into a rage and strikes Sir Richard on his face with a wand, drawing blood.

1397 Richard is arrested for his opposition to the King and plotting his imprisonment. He stands trial at Westminster and is attained for treason, has all his estates ceased and is later beheaded. He leaves a son and heir Thomas. He is 16 years of age and is made a royal ward of King Richard’s half brother John Holland, 1st Duke of Exeter.

1399 Thomas is mistreated by his guardian and eventually escapes to Henry IV 1399-1413 his uncle Thomas Arundel (the deposed Archbishop of Canterbury). Thomas accompanies Henry Bolingbroke in his return to England. Henry is crowned and Thomas acts as a butler at the coronation.

1400 King Henry reverses Richard’s attainder (conviction), and Thomas receives his father’s estates and honours. Thomas has large estates in the Welsh Marches and is sent to deal with the revolt by Owain Glyndwr, Prince of Wales.

1403 Richard fights at the Battle of Shrewsbury.

1405 To cement relations between England and it is arranged for Thomas to marry King John I of Portugal’s illegitimate daughter .

1410 Thomas is made a Knight of the Garter.

1411 Thomas leads a force of 1,000 archers to victory against Burgundy.

1414 Thomas is a close friend of King Henry. He appoints Thomas Henry V 1413-22 Lord Treasurer as well as Constable of Dover Castle and Warden of the Cinque Ports (south east ports).

1415 Thomas dies leaving 1/3 of Northwood in dower (for her life) for his widow Beatrice. The other 2/3 to the Hospital of Holy Trinity, Arundel.

1440 Beatrice dies and her 1/3 passes to the Hospital of Holy Trinity. Henry VI 1422-61 1470-71

1546 With the abolition of the Monasteries the Hospital is surrendered and Northwood passes to the Crown.

1547 All the Hospital’s property including Northwood is granted to Edward VI 1547-53 Sir Richard Lee. He grants it to Henry, Earl of Arundel. Henry is Lord High Constable at King Edward’s coronation. 1550 Henry is placed under house arrest on charges of peculation (steeling public money). Henry pays a fine.

1551 Henry is arrested for plotting treason, imprisoned for a year, then released.

1553 With King Edward’s declining health Henry takes the Great Mary I 1553-58 Seal and a letter of submission by the King’s Council and rides to Mary who is staying in Framlingham. He returns to London with Mary. He is appointed Lord Steward of the Royal Household.

1557 War is feared with France and Henry is appointed Lieutenant- General of the force to defend England.

1580 Henry dies, all his children had predeceased him, so his Elizabeth I 1558-1603 grandson Philip Howard (son of Mary Fitz Alan) inherits his estates and titles.

1582 Philip conveys Northwood to William and John Leefe.

1606 William Leefe holds Northwood alone. James I 1603-25

1642-1651 English Civil War Charles I 1625-49

Unknown Northwood passes to Edward Madgwick and others. Charles II 1660-85 James II 1685-88 1695 Edward conveys Northwood to Sir Thomas Miller. William III 1688-1702

1713 Edward possesses the manor again and gives it to his son John, Anne 1702-14 for a rent of £20, to be paid to Edward’s daughter Mary and her heirs. George I 1714/27 1750-1850 Industrial Revolution George II 1727/60

Unknown Northwood passes to Martha Woods (widow) of Chidham. George III 1760-1820

1782 Martha conveys Northwood to Richard Barwell of Stanstead.

1782/96 Richard serves as a Member of .
