Welcome to the Autumn edition of the Children’s University e-zine! We’ve had an exciting start to the new academic year and hope to share some exciting updates soon. We continue to enjoy reading your comments on your experiences and seeing your photographs, please keep us updated with all the fun things you get up to by emailing us at [email protected] or tweeting us @Newham_CU.

What’s App’ning?

We are delighted to launch the Children’s University ePassport app. You can now download the app free to any smart phone or tablet.

The app allows you to search for your local learning destinations at the touch of a button; you can search by activity or by location. The app works across the United Kingdom, so wherever you are you can find out about the amazing activities local to you at the time. We are currently updating our learning destinations on the app and we are always looking to recruit new learning destinations.

How to get a Blue Peter Badge!

A Blue Peter Badge is a special award given to people who appear on the show, or in recognition of achievement. Applicants must be 6 - 16 years old.

Badge owners can get free entry into over 200 Blue Peter Badge attractions around the country such as theme parks, zoos and castles. How about writing to Blue Peter to tell them about your achievements whilst collecting stamps at East London Children’s University? You could let them know that you have received a certificate milestone, you have attended a graduation ceremony, or even send them pictures of exciting activities you have been involved in.

Forestry Commission Take a visit to your local woods/forest. It is a working forest, growing trees for timber. It also provides a great place for people to enjoy and a home for lots of wildlife:

The Crystal exhibition features interactive exhibits, films, and animations, allowing visitors to explore a range of issues including city trends, urban planning, smart buildings, safety and security, energy, water, healthy lifestyles, environment, and mobility. The urban planning exhibition also features case studies from cities around the world sharing innovative ideas, and the’Future Life’ theatre invites you to imagine how cities might look in 2050.

Active Newham have arranged a fabulous programme of environmental, fun and sporting activities for you and your family to try out over the school holidays. ABBEY GARDENS GARDEN CLUB Abbey Gardens is a community garden in surrounding part of the ruins of a 12th century abbey. There are free garden club sessions for regular visitors and new gardeners, offering a great welcome and the opportunity to learn more and get involved. Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park Come and join us at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park this Autumn, we have a wide range of activities to suit everyone!

The Park is the perfect destination for families of all ages and interests. Whether it’s a walk through the parklands looking at the spectacular sites of the London 2012 venues or burning off steam at the Tumbling Bay playground.

Much more than a museum, the visitor attraction also lets visitors experience first-hand some of the science behind explosives and rockets in our Mad Lab and Rocket Vault. On our Test Range you can have a go at kid’s archery, try your skills on the BB airsoft rifle range, build and fire air rockets, plus race water rockets along our unique monorail track.

The Main Exhibition, Film Show and Armoury introduces visitors to the 300 year old history of the Royal Gunpowder Mills after which it is possible to explore more of the 170 acre site by foot, on Land Train or Military Truck. On site you are quite likely to come across a wide variety of wildlife that lives on this Secret Island being enclosed by rivers on all sides.

Two actors, both alike in dignity, in fair Hackney where we lay our scene… Roaming actors perform excerpts from Shakespearean plays as part of Hackney Libraries’ celebration of Shakespeare 400. To mark the 400th anniversary of the Bard’s death, Arcola Theatre actors will join the celebrations of Shakespeare’s life and works at Hackney Central Library during October half term. Join us for a day of curiosity, creativity, exploration and fun! Open to all ages and for free, Arcola Theatre and Hackney Libraries open the door to Shakespeare and allow everyone to have an accessible and exciting encounter with one of the world’s most famous playwrights. Have you thought about joining the Police Cadets

The Volunteer Police Cadets (VPC) is a uniformed voluntary youth organisation, supported by The Metropolitan Police Service. It is open to young people aged between 10-18 from across London’s diverse communities, irrespective of their background or financial circumstances and including those vulnerable to crime or social exclusion. The VPC offers fantastic op- portunities for young people aimed at enhancing their life experiences and citizenship skills, including the Duke of Edinburgh program.

Insight to Policing

The Cadet Unit meets regularly and takes part in many activities, including visits to Police Units / establishments, listening to speakers on a range of specialist subjects, annual sport- ing competitions with other VPC Units and youth groups, outward-bound activities (including Duke of Edinburgh), and camps. Cadets can also take part in non-confrontational policing, community events and local crime reduction initiatives.. We meet on a Tuesday from 1600- 1730 during term time.
