    JEWISH HISTORICAL INSTITUTE BULLETIN NO. 75 (1970) SZYMON DATNER GERMAN NAZI CRIMES AGAINST JEWS WHO ESCAPED FROM THE GHETTOES “LEGAL” THREATS AND ORDINANCES REGARDING JEWS AND THE POLES WHO HELPED THEM Among other things, the “final solution of the Jewish question” required that Jews be prohibited from leaving the ghettoes they were living in—which typically were fenced off and under guard. The occupation authorities issued inhumane ordinances to that effect. In his ordinance of October 15, 1941, Hans Frank imposed draconian penalties on Jews who escaped from the ghettoes and on Poles who would help them escape or give them shelter: “§ 4b (1) Jews who leave their designated quarter without authorisation shall be punished by death. The same penalty shall apply to persons who knowingly shelter such Jews. (2) Those who instigate and aid and abet shall be punished with the same penalty as the perpetrator; acts attempted shall be punished as acts committed. A penalty of severe prison sentence or prison sentence may be imposed for minor offences. (3) Sentences shall be passed by special courts.” 1 In the reality of the General Government (GG), § 4b (3) was never applied to runaway Jews. They would be killed on capture or escorted to the nearest police, gendarmerie, Gestapo or Kripo station and, after being identified as Jews and tortured to give away those who helped or sheltered them, summarily executed. Many times the same fate befell Poles, too, particularly those living in remote settlements and woodlands. The cases of Poles who helped Jews, which were examined by special courts, raised doubts even among the judges of this infamous institution because the only penalty stipulated by law (death) was so draconian.

In the late thirties Polish headquarters prepared "Plan Zachód" (Plan "West), a plan of mobilization of Polish Army in case of war with Germany. Earlier, the Poles did not regard the Germans as their main threat, priority was given to threat from the Soviets (see: Plan East). The overall operational plan assumed the creation of 30 infantry divisions, 9 reserve divisions, 11 cavalry brigades, two motorized brigades, 3 mountain brigades and a number of smaller units. Most Polish forces were grouped into 6 armies and a number of corps-sized "Operational Groups". Later in the course of the war other operational units were created. Signifi cantly, it was published shortly after the quincentenary of the Reformation in Poland. It is an anthology of thirteen articles, prefaced with an introduction by the editor of the volume, Jarosław Kłaczkow. The articles can be described as short, insightful summaries concerning the history of the Protestant communities in various parts of the region and in various periods, from the sixteenth century and the beginning of the Reformation in the early modern age up to the twentieth century. Dziekonski The copyright over the translation has been granted to the translator by the copyright holder of the original Polish text, and I authorize the University of Washington Libraries to make the full text of the English translation available to readers worldwide. TRANSLATOR’S NOTE The original Polish version of this book was written in the 1980s under communist rule, and remained dormant in a censor’s office for over a year. The author was ordered to alter various references concerning the Teschen dispute in 1938 and the Soviet invasion of Poland in alliance with the Nazis in September, 1939. Although the author expressed satisfaction at the eventual compromise between mandated omissions and academic integrity just prior to publication, the translator has made an attempt to add a few footnotes to provide some balance to the narrative. Regarding the customary problems with geographical locations in multiple languages, most locations described in First World War battles on the eastern front in which the Legions were involved and the post-war military operations in the Ukraine, Byelorussia, and Lithuania are in Polish. Otherwise, respective languages for whichever countries in which the geographic locations happened to be situated at the time are used. English names were used for those which possess them, such as “Warsaw,” “Cracow,” “Kaunas,” etc. Numbered footnotes are mostly identical to those in the original text and are listed at the end of each respective section. Footnotes with an asterisk at the bottom of the page are citations which the translator has added.

    Jewish Soldiers in Polish Armies 1794-1945 Tadeusz Dubicki and Grzegorz Łukomski Jewish settlers started to arrive in Poland early in the reign of the first Polish royal dynasty of Piasts. Since living conditions they found here were much more favorable than in the countries of Western Europe, Jewish population grew rapidly. In the centuries to come there were many waves of Jewish immigrants seeking refuge from pogroms and persecutions in the West. The number of Jews living in Poland in the mid-seventeenth century, at the golden age of the Polish Commonwealth, both politically and territorially, is estimated roughly at 450,000, whereas late in the eighteenth century, during the reign of King Stanislaw August Poniatowski (from 1764), at 750,000, most of them (about half a million) in cities and towns. Their percentage varied notably from province to province, with the eastern territories at the top of the list. Despite being mainly urban population engaged in trade and crafts, Jews could not easily be defined as “the third estate” (middle class) because of their legal and cultural distinctiveness.1 Many Jews became soon adapted to their new environment, assimilating to the new homeland in spiritual and cultural sense, and, with time, in the religious sense as well. Many identified themselves with Poland, contributing their knowledge, experience, and work to the common good. Many sectors of Polish economy, trade and crafts in particular, were dominated by Jews, who thus added to Poland’s development. Still, Jews, along with burghers or peasants, were not obliged (or rather privileged in the then perspective) to serve in the armed forces.

    IT’S TIME TO DIE by Krzysztof Zanussi translated by Anna Piwowarska // Stephen Davies 1 INTRODUCTION The grim title of this book originates from an anecdote and I ask you to treat it as a joke. I don’t intend to die soon or persuade anyone to relocate to the afterworld. But a certain era is dying before our very eyes and if someone is very attached to it, they should take my words to heart. This is what this book is to be about. But first, about that anecdote. It comes from a great actor, Jerzy Leszczynski. For me, a fifty-something-year-old, this surname is still very much alive. I saw Jerzy in a few roles in the ‘Polish Theatre’ just after the war; I also saw him in many pre-war films (after the war I think he only acted in ‘Street Boundary’). He was an actor from those pre-war years: handsome, endowed with a wonderful appearance and a beautiful voice. He played kings, military commanders, warlords and this is how the audiences loved him. After the war, he acted in radio plays – he had beautiful pre-war diction and of course he pronounced the letter ‘ł’ and he didn't swallow his vowels. Apart from this, he was known for his excellent manners, which befitted an actor who played kings and military commanders. When the time of the People’s Republic came, the nature of the main character that was played out on stage changed. The recruitment of actors also changed: plebeian types were sought after - 'bricklaying teams' and 'girls on tractors who conquered the spring'.
