Podpis ABSTRAKT Xiangsheng je humorný vypravěčský žánr založený na satiře a komentáři společnosti, který je dnes považován za nejvýznamnějšího zástupce tradičních populárních umění quyi 曲艺. Bakalářská práce se zaměřuje na takzvaný dialogický xiangsheng (duikou xiangsheng 对口相 声), který je představením dvou vypravěčů. Hlavními body zájmu jsou 50. léta 20. století, kdy byl xiangsheng využit pro potřeby propagandy nového státního zřízení, a období od roku 2005, kdy do veřejného povědomí vstupuje nejvýznamnější vypravěč současnosti Guo Degang 郭德纲 (1973–), který skrze návrat k tradici navrátil xiangsheng zpět na vrchol popularity.     COMMERCIALIZATION OF TRADITIONAL PERFORMING ARTS IN MAINLAND CHINA: A CASE STUDY OF DEYUNSHE Puman Hou* Benny Lim* * The Chinese University of Hong Kong http://doi.org/10.31039/jomeino.2021.5.1.5 Abstract China celebrated the 70th anniversary of its founding in 2019, and this has triggered heightened imagination towards traditional Chinese arts and culture. In the same year, its Ministry of Culture and Tourism rolled out a comprehensive plan to conserve Received 15 October 2020 traditional artforms by promoting active revitalization. This Revised 22 November 2020 exploratory research investigates the possible strategies, as well Accepted 26 December 2020 as areas of contention, in commercializing traditional performing arts, specifically, Chinese crosstalk. An in-depth case study of well-known Chinese crosstalk company, Deyunshe, is carried out. Case study involves in-depth investigations and the eventual understanding of real-world situations and phenomena. Deyunshe is one of the very few established Chinese crosstalk companies in China dedicated to revitalizing the art form. Research outcomes show that Deyunshe has been successful in revitalizing and commercializing Chinese crosstalk with its effective product, place, price, people, and physical evidence strategies. This in turn creates a viable model for traditional performing arts in China, crosstalk or otherwise, to be revitalized and made marketable. Nevertheless, the over- revitalization/commercialization of traditional performing arts may also result in the subordination of the artistic values of the artforms.   • Guo Degang: a Xiangsheng
    Shenshen Cai Swinburne University of Technology, Melbourne Guo Degang A Xiangsheng (Cross Talk) Performer Bridging the Gap Between Su (Vulgarity) and Ya (Elegance) Xiangsheng 相声 (cross talk), which has been one of the most popular folk art performance genres with the Chinese people since its emergence during the Qing Dynasty, began to lose its popularity at the turn of the 1990s. How- ever, this downward trajectory changed from about 2005, and it once again began to enthuse the public. The catalyst for this change in fortune has been attributed to Guo Degang and his Deyun Club 德云社. The general audience acclaim for Guo Degang’s xiangsheng performance not only turned him into a xiangsheng master and a grassroots cultural hero, it also, somewhat absurdly, evoked criticism from a few critics. The main causes of the negative critiques are the mundane themes and the ubiquitous vulgar baofu 包袱 (comical ele- ments) and rude jokes enlisted in Guo’s xiangsheng performance that revolve around the subjects of ethics, pornography, and prostitution, and which turn Guo into a signifier of vulgarity. However, with the media platform provided via the Weibo 微博 microblog, Guo Degang demonstrates his penchant for refined taste and his talent as an elegant literati. Through an in-depth analy- sis of both Guo Degang’s xiangsheng performance and his microblog entries, this paper will examine the contrasting features between Guo Degang’s artis- tic creations and his “private” life. Also, through the opposing contents and reflections of Guo Degang’s xiangsheng works and his microblog writings, an opaque and sometimes diametrically opposed insight into his worldviews is provided, and a glimpse of the dualistic nature of engagement and withdrawal from the world is revealed.

As an important social media and online communications platform, microblogs have come to play a pivotal role not only in brand marketing but also in breaking and amplifying crises and scandals. It became clear in 2012 that microblogs are now the main platform for disseminating news and guiding public opinion. How far a crisis spreads and how long it lingered on microblogs determined the crisis’ severity. If the news isn’t on Chinese microblogs, then it hasn’t reached crisis level yet. The English translation of Xiangsheng is to promote cultural exchange between China and other countries. The article first summarized the research status of xiangsheng translation and pointed out the necessity of this research. Secondly, based on Eco-translatology, it analyzed the translational eco-environment of xiangsheng. Thirdly, according to the principle of “multi-dimensional adaptation and adaptive selection”, it suggested several appropriate translation methods of Xiangsheng from the three dimensions of language, culture and communication. This is a new attempt to combine Eco-translatology with the English translation of Xiangsheng. The application improved the quality of Xiangsheng translation and will better meet the needs of the target audience. 1. Introduction Xiangsheng, as a traditional folk comedy art form unique to China, began in the Ming and Qing Dynasties and flourishes in contemporary society. It uses “speaking, imitating, teasing, and singing” as its main artistic means and “baofu” (decisive factor of xiangsheng, similar to punchline, is a way of organizing language to produce humorous effects) is its unique way of comic laughter. There is dankou xiangsheng (monologue talk), duikou xiangsheng (dialogue talk), and qunkou xiangsheng (group talk) according to the number of performers. The most common is duikou xiangsheng. Xiangsheng is not only a concentrated expression of Chinese language humor, but also a treasure of Chinese culture.

Sborgi Lawson 1 Recent scholarship in the field of music cognition suggests the need for increased inter- disciplinarity in moving beyond the boundaries of Western European music, and the study of 1234567890():,; the relationship between language and music is an especially fruitful area that can benefit from interdisciplinary collaboration. This paper heeds the call for collaborative research in cultures outside of Western Europe by focusing on Xiangsheng, a form of Chinese musical comedy that features an intriguing relationship between speech and song in performance. The present paper argues that analytical tools and perspectives from conversational analysis, communicative musicality, empirical research on music-language relationships, and perfor- mative mutuality in ethnomusicology all speak to the idea of musicality—the underlying capacity that undergirds our ability to communicate both verbally and musically—as a common foundational behavior in both speech and song. Cornell University 2008 My dissertation examines recent cultural productions rendered in local languages in the fields of television, film, fiction, popular music, and the Internet in mainland China since 2000, when the new national language law prescribed the standard Putonghua Mandarin as the principal language for broadcast media and movies. My dissertation sets out to examine this unsettled tension and to explore the rhetorical use of local language in different fields of cultural production. In television, local language functions as a humorous and satirical mechanism to evoke laughter that can foster a sense of local community and assert the local as the site of distinctive cultural production. In film and fiction, local language serves as an important marker of marginality, allowing filmmakers and writers rhetorically to position themselves in the margins to criticize the center and to repudiate the ideologies of modernism. In popular music, increasingly mediated by the Internet, local language has been explored by the urban educated youth to articulate a distinct youth identity in their negotiation with a globalizing and cosmopolitan culture. Drawing on cultural and literary theories, media studies, sociolinguistics, and dialectology, my interdisciplinary research focuses its analysis on many important but overlooked issues.
