Wagner Festival The Ring in seven days. Das Rheingold, Die Walküre, Siegfried and Götterdämmerung in succession. Four operas - one Prologue and three “days” - , four per- formances, fifteen hours of music in the long but con- centrated span of the same week. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday. A project in the spirit of Wagner, who fulfilled his dream of an integral performance of his Tetralogy in the new Festspielhaus in Bayreuth between 13 and 17 of August 1876. In the year that brings Verdi and Wagner together in the bicentenary of their births (1813), the Teatro alla Scala is to include in its 2012-2013 season a double Tetralogy: for all true Wagnerians and opera lovers everywhere, a full immersion into the most visiona- ry journey ever to come out of the musical theatre from Monteverdi to the present. Four different stage settings linked in a single project created by director Guy Cassiers, under the guidance of one of the greatest interpreters of Wagner, Daniel Barenboim, and with four casts of excellent Wagnerians, well-known to opera-goers around the world. The Scala’s connection with Wagner has solid roots, stretching back in time. On 26 of December 1898, the thirty-one-year-old Arturo Toscanini made his début in the Theatre with Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg. After that and until his move to the United States, each year alongside Aida, La Traviata, Rigoletto, Falstaff, Otello and Un Ballo in Maschera, Toscani- ni conducted Wagnerian titles in almost perfect pro- portions: Lohengrin, Tannhäuser, Tristan und Isolde, Siegfried, Die Walküre, Götterdämmerung and Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg. Victor de Sabata from Trieste, the former Habsburg seaport, maintained the Wagnerian tradition until his death in 1967. However, according to the annals, Wagner has been conducted at the Scala by a long line of great masters of the Germanic cultural sphe- re: Siegfried Wagner, Franz von Hösslin, Wilhelm Furtwängler, Clemens Krauss, Herbert von Karajan. During the twentieth century, the Scala has staged integral performances of the Tetralogy eight times in the same season: 1927 and 1928 (conducted by Ettore Panizza, an Argentinian of Italian origin), 1930 (Siegfried Wagner), 1931 (Panizza), 1938 (Cle- mens Krauss), 1943 (Franz von Hösslin), 1949-50 (Wilhelm Furtwängler), 1962-63 (André Cluytens). The last time the Ring was performed in the same week (six days to be precise) was in 1938, when Clemens Krauss conducted the Munich State Opera Chorus and Orchestra. Today, Daniel Barenboim is to take up this legacy and offer the public his interpretation of Wagner. • Parsifal and Canada: a Documentary Study
Parsifal and Canada: A Documentary Study The Canadian Opera Company is preparing to stage Parsifal in Toronto for the first time in 115 years; seven performances are planned for the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts from September 25 to October 18, 2020. Restrictions on public gatherings imposed as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic have placed the production in jeopardy. Wagnerians have so far suffered the cancellation of the COC’s Flying Dutchman, Chicago Lyric Opera’s Ring cycle and the entire Bayreuth Festival for 2020. It will be a hard blow if the COC Parsifal follows in the footsteps of a projected performance of Parsifal in Montreal over 100 years ago. Quinlan Opera Company from England, which mounted a series of 20 operas in Montreal in the spring of 1914 (including a complete Ring cycle), announced plans to return in the fall of 1914 for another feast of opera, including Parsifal. But World War One intervened, the Parsifal production was cancelled, and the Quinlan company went out of business. Let us hope that history does not repeat itself.1 While we await news of whether the COC production will be mounted, it is an opportune time to reflect on Parsifal and its various resonances in Canadian music history. This article will consider three aspects of Parsifal and Canada: 1) a performance history, including both excerpts and complete presentations; 2) remarks on some Canadian singers who have sung Parsifal roles; and 3) Canadian scholarship on Parsifal. NB: The indication [DS] refers the reader to sources that are reproduced in the documentation portfolio that accompanies this article.

Mixed Emotions July 2014: two performances of Wagner one in each hemisphere and two different reactions. James Cohan Gallery THURSDAY, APRIL 14, 2005 In Pursuit of a Total Art, the Paris Opera Adds Video to 'Tristan und Isolde' By Alan Riding Ben Heppner and Waltraud Meier as the title characters in "Tristan und Isolde," beneath video scenes by Bill Viola at the Paris National Opera. Photo by Pascal Gely/Enguerand. Copyright 2005 The New York Times Company. PARIS, April 13 - Huge, dense, taxing, with almost all the action taking place in the heart, Wagner's "Tristan und Isolde" is notoriously difficult to stage. Indeed, the composer himself abandoned his first attempt in Vienna in the early 1860's after no fewer than 77 rehearsals. Now, in a daring experiment, the Paris National Opera has invited the American video artist Bill Viola to accompany the work with his own visual commentary. On a 30-foot-wide screen above and behind the somberly lighted space peopled by the singers, images that recall some of Mr. Viola's well-known video pieces variously offer literal, metaphorical and even spiritual complements to one of mythology's most famous and tragic love stories. With only the preludes played to a closed curtain, Mr. Viola's multi-toned video poem runs for some 3 hours 40 minutes, a full-length spectacle in its own right. 533 WEST 26TH STREET NEW YORK NEW YORK 10001 TEL 212 714 9500 FAX 212 714 9510 James Cohan Gallery The production, first performed in a concert version at Disney Hall in Los Angeles in December, is directed by Peter Sellars, with Esa-Pekka Salonen conducting the Paris Opera Orchestra.

Identifying whether nineteenth century composers recognized the growing opportunities for vocal drama, size, and range in singers and therefore wrote roles for ‘between’ singers; or conversely whether, singers began to challenge and develop their voices to sing the new influx of romantic, verismo and grand repertoire is difficult to determine. Whichever the case, teachers and students should not be surprised about the existence of this nebulous Fach. A clear and concise definition of the word Fach for the purpose of this paper is as follows: a specific voice classification. Zwischenfach is an important topic because young singers are often confused and over-eager to self-label due to the discipline’s excessive labeling of Fachs. Rushing to categorize a young voice ultimately leads to misperceptions. To address some of the confusion, this paper briefly explores surveys of the pedagogy and history of the Fach system. To gain insights into the relevance of Zwischenfach in today’s marketplace, I developed with my advisors, colleagues and students a set of subjects willing to fill out questionnaires.

  • Newsletter September 2011 (PDF)
Newsletter September 2011 CHAIRMAN’S INTRODUCTION Dear Member, The Committee hopes you had an enjoyable summer. Some Members were in Bayreuth and Bruce Arnold, who was previously there in 1959, has kindly offered to give us the first talk after summer, comparing and contrasting his two visits. We have largely finalised our schedule of talks until next summer and hope you will find that at least some of them are of interest to you. Dates to the end of 2011 are now fixed, but further details are needed, and some possible changes may occur, for 2012. We will update the website as information becomes available and the next Newsletter will also provide more details. A key part of the year will be our continuing Study Days on Wagner’s Operas with Derek Watson. We continue with Lohengrin in October and hope in spring to follow with Tristan. That we are having talks twice this year is following representations from Members. This newsletter also contains a review of the trip to Karlsruhe by Mary Spollen and I contribute a short note on the Congress in Wrocław this year. Ian Fox kindly supplied a bibliography for those interested in following up some of the things discussed in his lecture last November, while Michael Marr reminds us of the website. Lastly, Chris McQuaid has offered some thoughts on the new production of Tannhäuser in Bayreuth this year. We look forward to seeing you at meetings Kind regards, Anthony Linehan, Chairman 2 SOCIETY PROGRAMME OF EVENTS 2011/ 2012 Our wide-ranging programme of lectures was very well attended over the past months and plans for the forthcoming season are well advanced.
