GRADUATION 2021 Message from the President It is with pride that we take a moment to recognize the many accomplishments of our newest graduates – even if we cannot gather together at this time. Graduation is an important milestone achieved through hard work, discipline and commitment, and it deserves our recognition and praise. It is a time when people reflect on their experiences, remember the good times and appreciate those who helped them to achieve their goals. There may have been times when this day seemed unimaginable. I hope the process of getting to this point, as difficult as it may have been at times, offered each of you opportunities for personal growth, as well as the development of skills and the acquisition of knowledge. Graduation is also a time to look to the future. For some, the future will involve the pursuit of further education. Douglas College has excellent transfer pathways to other post-secondary institutions and our graduates do very well. For those who have completed their education, the next step may be to find a job. Douglas College provides support for graduates seeking employment. Whether you continue your studies or begin your career, all our graduates are welcome to access the services of the Career Centre and are encouraged to stay in contact with Douglas College through Alumni Relations. On behalf of the Douglas College community, we offer our heartfelt congratulations and best wishes to the graduating class of 2021! It wasn’t until adulthood that she learned her mother was in fact Indigenous – her family being one of the last to live on the New Westminster reserve before it was sold and deemed inactive in 1951. After learning about her Indigenous background, Chief Larrabee was determined to understand more about her heritage. In 1994, she became the first member to be re-instated to the New Westminster Indian Band, taking the community off the Inactive General List of Reserves. She has since dedicated over two decades to educating the public by sharing her own personal story and that of Indigenous history. In 2003, the National Film Board released a film following her journey called A Tribe of One that unearths her Indigenous heritage and the history of the reserves in New Westminster. This film won Best Documentary at Film Festivals in San Francisco, Chicago and Duncan, B.C. Today, the film is used as a teaching tool in many colleges and universities across Canada and the U.S. Chief Larrabee is an active partner with the New Westminster School District and is a member of the New Westminster Aboriginal Education Advisory Committee of School District 40. She has also been a member of the Aboriginal Advisory Committee at Douglas College for many years and had a hand in building the Aboriginal Gathering Place at the New Westminster Campus. She continues to be an active member of the community and works closely with New Westminster’s Mayor and Council. Chief Larrabee led the Qayqayt First Nation from the brink of extinction to a community of almost 100 documented members and continues to serve as the elected Chief of the Qayqayt First Nation to this day. Under her leadership, the Qayqayt First Nation is recognized by all levels of government and the Assembly of First Nations where it holds delegate status. 4 DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI AWARD Lance Ryan, University Transfer - Music, 1991 Lance Ryan is one of the most sought-after heldentenors in the world today. He is especially appreciated in major roles in operas by Richard Strauss and Richard Wagner. In 1989, Ryan came to Douglas College to pursue Basic Musicianship, with a focus in classic guitar, before utilizing the University Transfer program to complete his degree at the University of British Columbia. In his final year at Douglas College, Lance realized his passion for vocal performance and began training with local voice coaches, before moving to Europe to further hone his skills. After his vocal studies with renowned teachers like Gianni Raimondi and Carlo Bergonzi and the start of his career in Italy, where he won the AsLiCo operatic singing competition in 2002, Lance moved to Germany in 2005 to fully develop his vast repertoire. As a member of the Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe, he had numerous key roles such as Siegfried in Richard Wagner’s Die Walküre and Götterdämmerung, Cavaradossi in Giacomo Puccini’s Tosca, Otello and Calaf in Franco Alfano and Giacomo Puccini’s Turnadot, Kaiser in Richard Strauss’ Die Frau ohne Schatten, and Bacchus in Richard Strauss’ Ariadne auf Naxos, among others. Lance’s career has taken him to some of the greatest operatic stages in Europe and New York, including London’s Covent Garden, New York’s Metropolitan Opera and Vienna’s Wiener Staatsoper. In addition to his professional ventures, Lance has performed at benefit concerts for Critter Care Wildlife Society, the Peninsula Arts Foundation, PETA and Douglas College Alumni Association and frequently speaks to young singers about careers in the performing arts. Lance recently relocated back to Metro Vancouver after 20 years in Europe and continues to experience international success while following a reduced schedule to make time for his family. 5 FACULTY OF APPLIED Sumeet Bhamra COMMUNITY STUDIES Danielle Elyse Bosma Karla Gronsdahl, Dean Nicole Serena Brindle* Matthew Joseph Carpenter* The Faculty of Applied Community Joshua Lik Sung Chien Studies prepares graduates for Leah Dazon careers in the rewarding and Kathleen Denise Hazel Delorie challenging field of human services.
