This new translation by Marion Wiesel, Elie's wife and frequent translator, presents this seminal memoir in the language and spirit truest to the author's original intent. And in a substantive new preface, Elie reflects on the enduring importance of Night and his lifelong, passionate dedication to ensuring that the world never forgets man's capacity for inhumanity to man. Night offers much more than a litany of the daily terrors, everyday perversions, and rampant sadism at Auschwitz and Buchenwald; it also eloquently addresses many of the philosophical as well as personal questions implicit in any serious consideration of what the Holocaust was, what it meant, and what its legacy is and will be. Deborah Lipstadt: Antisemitism: Here and Now The award-winning author of The Eichmann Trial and Denial: Holocaust History on Trial gives us a penetrating and provocative analysis of the hate that will not die, focusing on its current, virulent incarnations on both the political right and left: from white supremacist demonstrators in Charlottesville, Virginia, to mainstream enablers of antisemitism such as political figures, to a gay pride march in Chicago that expelled a group of women for carrying a Star of David banner. Bari Weiss: How to Fight Antisemitism On October 27, 2018, eleven Jews were gunned down as they prayed at their synagogue in Pittsburgh. It was the deadliest attack on Jews in American history. For most Americans, the massacre at Tree of Life, the synagogue where Bari Weiss became a bat mitzvah, came as a total shock. But anti-Semitism is the oldest hatred, commonplace across the Middle East and on the rise for years in Europe. So that terrible morning in Pittsburgh raised a question Americans can no longer avoid: Could it happen here? Sidney Shachnow: Hope and Honor General Sid Shachnow's amazing memoir of his survival against all odds through the Holocaust, the Vietnam war, Special Forces assignments in the world's trouble spots, and his eventual rise to US Army Major General, in charge of all US Special Forces. Robert Satloff: Among the Righteous: Lost Stories from the Holocaust’s Long Reach into Arab Lands: Thousands of people have been honored for saving Jews during the Holocaust—but not a single Arab. Looking for a hopeful response to the plague of Holocaust denial sweeping across the Arab and Muslim worlds, Robert Satloff sets off on a quest to find the Arab hero whose story will change the way Arabs view Jews, themselves, and their own history. The story of the Holocaust's long reach into the Arab world is difficult to uncover, covered up by desert sands 3 Educational Materials re: Antisemitism Read/Watch/Listen List: and desert politics. We follow Satloff over four years, through eleven countries, from the barren wasteland of the Sahara, where thousands of Jews were imprisoned in labor camps; through the archways of the Mosque in Paris, which may once have hidden 1700 Jews; to the living rooms of octogenarians in London, Paris and Tunis. The story is very cinematic; the characters are rich and handsome, brave and cowardly; there are heroes and villains. The most surprising story of all is why, more than sixty years after the end of the war, so few people— Arab and Jew—want this story told. Documentaries: PBS Among the Righteous: a documentary movie to accompany the book by Satloff. https://www.pbs.org/show/among-the-righteous/ The Liberators: Fighting on Two Fronts in World War II: This documentary examines the role of African American soldiers in the liberation of concentration camps in Europe, and the segregation that they concurrently faced at home in the United States. There are extensive interviews both with soldiers and survivors about the impact of their shared historical experience. Although there has been some controversy about the historical accuracy of this film, it is a valuable contribution to the oral history of this period, particularly about segregation in the United States. Good Enough: One Man's Memoir on the Price of a Dream: Leon Bass, a retired educator who as a young African American soldier entered Buchenwald shortly after its liberation, has dedicated his life to fighting racism. In his memoir, Dr. Bass reflects on his experiences of being told he was not "good enough" as he faced segregation in the United States, chronicles his career in education, and describes how he awakened to new possibilities as he listened to Dr. Martin Luther King's 1963 "I Have a Dream" speech. The price to realize that dream, he explains, is to stand up and be counted by doing the right thing, whether large or small, every day. Interview with Dr. Leon Bass: “I Had Come Face to Face with Evil: Leon Bass Talks about his Experiences of Racism” https://www.facinghistory.org/books-borrowing/good-enough-one-mans-memoir-price-dream Viral: Antisemitism in Four Mutations: Aired on PBSin 2020. With 30,000 pages of writing, photographs, posters, and more, the Oyneg Shabes Archive is the most important cache of in-the-moment, eyewitness accounts from the Holocaust. It documents not only how the Jews of the ghetto died, but how they lived. The film is based on the book of the same name by historian Samuel Kassow. Movies: #AnneFrank- Parallel Stories: 2019 production on Netflix. Through her diary, Anne Frank's story is retold alongside those of five Holocaust survivors in this poignant documentary from Oscar winner Helen Mirren. The Believer: The Believer is a 2001 American drama film directed by Henry Bean and written by Bean and Mark Jacobson. It stars Ryan Gosling as Daniel Balint, a Jew who becomes a neo- Nazi. The film is loosely based on the true story of Dan Burros,a member of the American Nazi Party and the New York branch of the United Klans of America. He committed suicide after being revealed as Jewish by a New York Times reporter.[5] It won the Grand Jury Prize at the 2001 Sundance Film Festival and the Golden St. George at the 23rd Moscow International Film Festival. School Ties: School Ties is a 1992 American drama . When David Greene (Brendan Fraser) receives a football scholarship to a prestigious prep school in the 1950s, he feels pressure to hide the fact that he is Jewish from his classmates and teachers, fearing that they may be anti-Semitic.

1 Palimpsest World: The Serpentine Trail of Roy Frankhouser from the SWP, the KKK, and the “Knights of Malta” to Far Beyond the Grassy Knoll1 Introduction In the summer of 1987 the National Caucus of Labor Committees (NCLC) submitted a document in a legal action that attempted to prove that Roy Frankhouser, a well-known KKK member and Lyndon LaRouche‘s longtime paid ―security consultant,‖ was highly connected inside the CIA. The document, ―Attachment 2,‖ began: During 1974-75, Roy Frankhauser [sic], claiming to be working on behalf of the CIA, established contact with the NCLC. In approximately June 1975, Frankhauser submitted to three days of intensive debriefings, during which time he provided details of his employment with the National Security Council on a special assignment to penetrate a Canada-based cell of the Palestinian terrorist Black September organization, and other aspects of his CIA career dating back to his involvement in the Bay of Pigs.2 Frankhauser said he served as the ―babysitter‖ for [Mario] Garcia- Kholy [sic], one of the Brigade leaders who was to have a high government post in a post-Castro Cuba.3 Subsequently, NCLC researchers found a brief reference in PRAVDA citing a 1962 expulsion of one ―R. Frankhauser‖ from a low-level post at the U.S. Embassy in Moscow on charges that he was spying.4 The NCLC reference to a ―R. Frankhauser‖ being in Moscow in 1962 as somehow relevant evidence that Roy E. Frankhouser was working for the CIA suggests just how much we have entered the Mad Hatter‘s World.

This article argues that during the 1970s, Klan organizers transformed a reactionary counter-movement that had failed to preserve white supremacy by terrorizing civil rights organizers and black citizens, into a revolutionary white power movement that inculpated Jews and the federal government.4 It describes how these organizers

  • The Representation of the Ku Klux Klan in Mainstream American Cinema (1988-2016)
The Representation of the Ku Klux Klan in Mainstream American Cinema (1988-2016) Thesis Submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Leicester by Philip Wintle MA, AFHEA Department of History of Art and Film University of Leicester September 2019 Phil Wintle The Representation of the Ku Klux Klan in Mainstream American Cinema (1988- 2016) The Ku Klux Klan are America’s most notorious terrorist organisation. In the 1920s membership to the Klan numbered several million, partly resulting from the success of The Birth of a Nation (1915). In this period of Klan popularity, Hollywood utilised their iconography for box office success. In the contemporary age Klan membership has diminished, yet the Klan image continues to be regularly depicted in American film. My research assesses the function of the Klan in contemporary cinema, looking at their representation between 1988 and 2016 to explain the longevity of their depiction in a period of social irrelevance. The shifting representation of the Klan offers a unique case study in demonstrating the changing attitudes Hollywood has to race and racism. In this thesis, I argue that the Klan have been used in films to paradoxically downplay issues of racism. In the 1980s and 1990s, the Klan were presented as a white ‘Other’ to whom racism is isolated. This ‘Othering’ drives melodramatic narratives of white conflict in films such as Mississippi Burning (1988) and A Time to Kill (1996). The melodramatic simplicity of the Klan image is later accentuated in comedy films between 1999 and 2013. The comedic depiction of the Klan has often been ignored in existing literature on the Klan’s representation in film; this is a significant oversight, as comedy has kept the Klan image within public consciousness during this period.
