Marginal lagoons are filled during the flooding of the river, together with wind transport, rain washout and interaction with subsurface water with sedimental material. Therefore, marginal lagoons are important for the knowledge of the evolution of a river system. To obtain representative profile sampling it is necessary to know the geological and dynamical situation of the lagoons. To obtain information about sediment distribution and structures, GPR-profiles on the lagoons are an adequate technique for rapid and exact results and permit to find easily appropriate locations for sampling. The obtained samples show a very good correlation with GPR results and permit an evaluation of the history of the lagoons. It was able to obtain information about climate variations, like rainfall, wind directions, insolation and temperature evolution, and anthropogenic influence shown by chemical alteration of the sediment composition permitting to determine the evolution of different sources, industrial or agronomical. Introduction Marginal lagoons are lake environments of periodic or permanent flooding resulting from the overflow of the rivers, which receive contributions from direct rainfall or underground water (Junk, 1989). These lagoons are considered wetlands and are playing an important ecological and hydrodynamic role in a river basin system. In the upper to middle course of the San Francisco River Basin (Patrus et al., 2001), these lagoons are responsible for breeding and restocking of migratory fish (Pompeu, 1997; Pompeu and Godinho, 2003). From a hydrodynamic point of view, these marginal lagoons are elongated depressions usually towards the river channel that, like the flood plains, reduce the kinetic energy of the flood pulses, acting as areas of sediment deposition and retention (Wolman and Leopold 1957; Junk, 1989; Gama, 2006). The particle size and mineral composition, the stratigraphic organization and the chemical composition of these sediments deposited in lagoons are important records of river hydrodynamics, climate changes and the entry of contaminants in drainage area (Godoy et al., 1998; Argollo, 2001; Nery, 2009). Agricultural activities and industrial processes are using a growing number of chemical compounds to enhance the quality and quantity of production in various industrial processes or as micronutrients and pesticides in agriculture. Many of them have elevated toxicity in excess and their cumulative effects might affect the quality of natural resources and human health (Malavolta 1989; Duffus 2002). To evaluate this contamination, its changes in quality and quantity, representative sampling is absolutely necessary. To see how the marginal lagoons reflect the chemical and environmental evolution of a basin, we need to find the best place for sampling. The use of ground-penetrating radar (GPR) is a good method to find the localities with the greatest amount of sediments and with the best properties for analyses. This work will show the connection between GPR profiles and the data which can be extracted from the drill samples, localized by this geophysical method. 2. Regional setting The study area is located in the surroundings of Pirapora city in the upper to middle course of São Francisco River, in the Northern part of Minas

Acesta reprezintă al treilea livrabil și a fost redactat cu scopul de a prezenta provocările și oportunitățile actuale din Valea Jiului, care acoperă dimensiunile politice și administrative, economică, sociale și culturale, tehnologice și de mediu. În identificarea și fundamentarea provocărilor și oportunităților, au fost utilizate surse publice de informații, precum și informații obținute în interviurile realizate de PwC cu părțile interesate în perioada ianuarie-februarie 2020 în Valea Jiului. Received 10 May 2009; Revised 23 October 2009; Accepted 2 November 2009 ABSTRACT: The many glacial cirques in the mountains of Romania indicate the distribution of former glacier sources, related to former climates as well as to topography. In the Transylvanian Alps (Southern Carpathians) cirque floors rise eastward at 0.714 m kmÀ1, and cirque aspects tend ENE, confirming the importance of winds from some westerly direction. There is a contrast between two neighbouring ranges: the Fa˘ga˘ras¸, where the favoured aspect of cirques is ENE, and the Iezer, where the tendency is stronger and to NNE. This can be explained by the Iezer Mountains being sheltered by the Fa˘ga˘ras¸, which implies precipitation-bearing winds from north of west at times of mountain glaciation. Palaeoglaciation levels also suggest winds from north of west, which is consistent with aeolian evidence from Pleistocene dunes, yardangs and loess features in the plains of Hungary and south- western Romania. In northern Romania (including Ukrainian Maramures¸) the influence of west winds was important, but sufficient only to give a northeastward tendency in cirque aspects.

Lower Cretaceous Urgonian/platform facies, Lower Cretaceous black shales Deep-water sections with Cretaceous cyclic CORBs Degree of difficulty and weather: low, most of the stops are beside or near roads, although a couple of short (less than 1 km) hikes will be involved. Sturdy footwear is recommended. First day 26th of August Bucharest-Focsani-Lepsa Outcrops displaying Lower Cretaceous black shales, followed by Albian up to Coniacian red shales will be examined in the Putna Valley Basin (Marginal Fold Nappe, Vrancea Halfwindow). The city provides a mix of wonderful mountain scenery in the nearby Poiana Braşov (a renown winter resort) and medieval history with German influences in the old town. This study aimed at the investigation of water quality in creeks of the Southern Retezat (Piule-Iorgovanul Mountains) in order to provide information on pollutants of both natural and anthropogenic origin, which could pose a threat for the human health. Heavy metal and other inorganic ion contents of samples were analyzed with on-site and laboratory measurements to estimate water quality. The samples were investigated using microwave plasma - atomic emission spectrometry to quantify specific elements, namely aluminium, cadmium, cobalt, chromium, copper, iron, magnesium, manganese, molybdenum, nickel, lead and zinc.

    The Annals of Valahia University of Târgovişte, Geographical Series, Tome 10 / 2010 __________________________________________________________________________________________________ TERRITORIAL CONCENTRATION OF THE POOR PEOPLE IN THE PETROŞANI DEPRESSION Andra COSTACHE1 1Valahia University of Târgovişte Abstract: The paper analyses the features of the deprived urban areas from Petroşani Depression, characterized by the residential concentration of the poor people, but also by poor living conditions, households with limited access to utilities and low acces to urban services. These areas have been identified following field surveys applied in the six towns of the studied region. Key words: Petroşani Depression, poverty, deprived urban areas 1. Dimensions of poverty in the Petroşani Depression. In the Petroşani Depression, the level of poverty is a direct consequence of the regions’ evolution in the last 50 years and of the economic restructuring. These factors have had an impact on the structure of active and inactive population and influenced the income sources and the income level, which are the main prerequisites of poverty. Compared to the national average for urban areas, in the cities of Petroşani Depression the income from wages, from self-employed activities or from goods saling (other than agricultural products) have a lower weight. On the other hand, there are higher than the national urban averages the value of social transfers and the amount of services that are covered by certain discounts provided by employers (in this case the National Pit Coal Company) – Table 1. This reflects the dependence of incomes on the welfare system and on the coal-extracting activities (the revenues of 14.3% of households rely solely on wages, social benefits or social transfers from CNH - Negulescu et al., 2004).

Abstract. The Southern Carpathians are situated in the central part of Romania, between Prahova Valley and the Danube, being the highest and most massive mountains from the Romanian Carpahtians. The relief and vegetation are similar to the Alps. These mountains conserve the most representative glaciar relief from Romania, with cuaternar glaciar tracks. Some of its peaks, namely Moldoveanu, Negoiu, Parângul Mare and Peleaga exceed 2500 m. From its total 217.889 ha occupied by forests with water protection functions, the forests located on lake slopes occupy 9.746 ha, namely 5%. The forests from this area are composed of spruce (Picea abies L.H. Karst) and beech (Fagus sylvatica L.), accompanied by other species such as birch (Alnus glutinosa, L., Gaertn.) and pine (Pinus sp.). From the point of view of the field’s orography, these forests are located on lands with an middle inclination on all exposition categories, but predominantly on the North-East, one at an average altitude of 1050 m. From the point of view of site conditions, the characteristic flora type is Asperula-Dentaria, while the main soils are dystric cambisol and eutric cambisol. 1. Introduction The Southern Carpathians are situated within Prahova Valley in the east, and Timiş-Cerna valleys in the west, Getic Subcarpathians and Mehedinți Plateau in the south and Transylvania’s basin in the north.
