  • Monthly Highlights from TBBC
Monthly Highlights from TBBC January 2021 TALKING BOOK & BRAILLE CENTER A MESSAGE FROM THE NEW JERSEY STATE LIBRARIAN This will be my last newsletter message. I will be retiring on January 31st. Jennifer Nelson has been named as the next State Librarian. I have been reflecting on the past eight years. While I believe that the State Library has made many advances across the state, none has been as positive and fulfilling as the services to you, our TBBC patrons. You can go to public libraries in almost every county for help to download books and magazines. TBBC can now send multiple books on a single cartridge and TBBC is now piloting a Braille device that fits into the palm of your hand. Such advances are truly remarkable and will get better. So as I leave a job I love, I love that you can now get “any book, any time.” Take care and be safe. Thank you, Mary Mary L. Chute New Jersey State Librarian NEW JERSEY STATE LIBRARIAN – JENNIFER NELSON Thomas Edison State University (TESU) announced that Jennifer R. Nelson has been chosen to serve as the new State Librarian for the New Jersey State Library (NJSL), an affiliate of TESU. TESU President, Dr. Merodie A. Hancock, said “Jen has built a reputation as an active state and national leader in digital inclusion, equity and diversity programming, and technology and data innovation.” Jennifer Nelson currently serves as the director of Minnesota State Library Services, a division that administers Minnesota’s state and federal programs for libraries and the Minnesota Braille and Talking Book Library.

INTRODUCTION The U.S. Supreme Court's 1896 decision in Plessy v. Ferguson' has long stood as an ignominious marker in U.S. law, symbolizing the nation's highest legal sanction for the physical separation by race of persons in the United States. In ruling against thirty-four-year-old New Orleans shoemaker Homer Adolph Plessy's challenge to Louisiana's Separate Railway Act of 1890,2 the Court majority declared that we think the enforced separation of the races, as applied to the internal commerce of the state, neither abridges the privileges or immunities of the colored man, deprives him of his property without due process of law, nor denies him the equal protection of the laws, within the meaning of the Fourteenth Amendment.3 One commentator on the Court's treatment of African-American civil rights cast the Plessy decision as "the climactic Supreme Court pronouncement on segregated institutions."4 Historian C.

  • A Book Lover's Journey: Literary Archaeology and Bibliophilia in Tim
Verbeia Número 1 ISSN 2444-1333 Leonor María Martínez Serrano A Book Lover’s Journey: Literary Archaeology and Bibliophilia in Tim Bowling’s In the Suicide’s Library Leonor María Martínez Serrano Universidad de Córdoba [email protected] Resumen Nativo de la costa occidental de Canadá, Tim Bowling es uno de los autores canadienses más aclamados. Su obra In the Suicide’s Library. Abstract A native of the Canadian West Coast, Tim Bowling is widely acclaimed as one of the best living Canadian authors. His creative work entitled In the Suicide’s Library. A Book Lover’s Journey (2010) explores how a single object —a tattered copy of Wallace Stevens’s Ideas of Order that he finds in a university library— can render the past visible and tangible in its pure materiality.
