    The Interplay of Authority, Masculinity, and Signification in the “Grunge Killed Glam Metal” Narrative by Holly Johnson A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Music and Culture Carleton University Ottawa, Ontario © 2014, Holly Johnson ii Abstract This thesis will deconstruct the "grunge killed '80s metal” narrative, to reveal the idealization by certain critics and musicians of that which is deemed to be authentic, honest, and natural subculture. The central theme is an analysis of the conflicting masculinities of glam metal and grunge music, and how these gender roles are developed and reproduced. I will also demonstrate how, although the idealized authentic subculture is positioned in opposition to the mainstream, it does not in actuality exist outside of the system of commercialism. The problematic nature of this idealization will be examined with regard to the layers of complexity involved in popular rock music genre evolution, involving the inevitable progression from a subculture to the mainstream that occurred with both glam metal and grunge.     ENGINEERING STATEMENT This engineering statement is prepared on behalf of Media-Com Television, Inc., licensee of Low Power TV Station WAOH-LP - Akron, Ohio, in support of comments in MM Docket 87-268, the DTV allotment proceeding. WAOH-LP operates on Channel 29 with a maximum peak visual effective radiated power of 60.6 kilowatts utilizing a direc- tional antenna. The draft table of DTV allotments contained in the Sixth Further Notice of Proposed Rulemaking in MM Docket 87-268 proposes to allot Channel 29 to Youngstown, Ohio, as a DTV allotment for use by WKBN-TV, whose present NTSC operation is on Channel 27. The WAOH-LP transmitter site lies 21.3 kilometers inside the predicted 43.8 dBu noise limited contour for the proposed DTV operation of WKBN- TV on Channel 29. Thus, it is obvious that continued operation by WAOH-LP on Chan- nel 29 would cause interference to the DTV operation of WKBN-TV proposed in this draft table, since it is impossible to provide the required protection to a cochannel facil- ity, either DTV or NTSC, from a transmitter site located within its protected contour. Album ›The Mind Plays Tricks on You‹ erscheint im Frühjahr Im Juni drei Deutschland-Shows in Hamburg, Berlin & Münster Die großartigen britischen Rocker Bush kommen 2020 mit einem neuen Album, sowie einer ganzen Reihe von Live-Shows, zurück auf Tour. Die Band mit dem charismatischen Frontmann Gavin Rossdale kündigte unlängst an, dass ihr achtes Album ›The Mind Plays Tricks on You‹ im März oder April diesen Jahres veröffentlicht wird. Im Zuge der Veröffentlichung werden Bush weltweit einige Shows spielen, dadrunter auch u.a. am 5. Juni 2020 in der Grossen Freiheit 36 in Hamburg. Seit ihrer Gründung im Jahr 1991 gelten Bush als eine Rockband, die auf eine kuriose Weise stets antizyklisch zu den jeweils aktuellen musikalischen Strömungen in Großbritannien agierten. Nur so lässt sich auch erklären, dass sie außerhalb ihrer Heimat und allen voran in den USA immer erfolgreicher waren. Diese Besonderheit begann bereits mit der Veröffentlichung ihres Debüts ›Sixteen Stone‹ im Jahr 1994. Während das Album in England gerade einmal bis auf Platz 42 stieg, knackte es in den USA direkt die Top Ten und wurde dort bis heute mit sechsfach Platin ausgezeichnet. Auch in Australien, Neuseeland und Kanada erhielt die Platte vielfach Platin und konnte sich teils monatelang in den Top Ten halten mit fünf ausgekoppelten Hit-Singles wie ›Everything Zen‹, ›Comedown‹ und ›Glycerine‹. Mit ihrem zweiten, 1996 veröffentlichten Album ›Razorblade Suitcase‹, gelang Bush endgültig der Schritt in die Oberliga der globalen Rockmusik. Die Strategie der Band bestand darin unter Zuhilfenahme eines renommierten, für jeweils einen sehr eigenen Sound bekannten Produzenten ein Unikum darzustellen, welches mit keinem anderen ihrer Alben vergleichbar schien.

    THE BIRTH OF HARD ROCK 1964-9 Charles Shaar Murray Hard rock was born in spaces too small to contain it, birthed and midwifed by youths simultaneously exhilarated by the prospect of emergent new freedoms and frustrated by the slow pace of their development, and delivered with equipment which had never been designed for the tasks to which it was now applied. Hard rock was the sound of systems under stress, of energies raging against confnement and constriction, of forces which could not be contained, merely harnessed. It was defned only in retrospect, because at the time of its inception it did not even recognise itself. The musicians who played the frst ‘hard rock’ and the audiences who crowded into the small clubs and ballrooms of early 1960s Britain to hear them, thought they were playing something else entirely. In other words, hard rock was – like rock and roll itself – a historical accident. It began as an earnest attempt by British kids in the 1960s, most of whom were born in the 1940s and raised and acculturated in the 1950s, to play American music, drawing on blues, soul, R&B, jazz and frst-generation rock, but forced to reinvent both the music, and its world, in their own image, resulting in something entirely new. However, hard rock was neither an only child, nor born fully formed. It shared its playpen, and many of its toys, with siblings (some named at the time and others only in retrospect) like R&B, psychedelia, progressive rock, art-rock and folk-rock, and it emerged only gradually from the intoxicating stew of myriad infuences that formed the musical equivalent of primordial soup in the uniquely turbulent years of the second (technicolour!) half of the 1960s.
