    Firenze in Guerra, 1940-1944 Il 23 ottobre, alle ore 17.00, si aprirà a Palazzo Medici Riccardi la mostra storica Firenze in guerra, 1940-1944; l’evento è promosso dall’Istituto storico della Resistenza in Toscana col sostegno della Regione Toscana, della Provincia e del Comune di Firenze. Al Rondò di Bacco, nel complesso monumentale di Palazzo Pitti, un film sonoro e la serie completa delle fotografie scattate dall’architetto Nello Baroni permetteranno di im- mergersi nell’esperienza dei “giorni dell’emergenza”, quando migliaia di fiorentini furono costretti a lasciare le case del centro storico per rifugiarsi nelle sale di Palazzo Pitti. La mostra, curata da Valeria Galimi e Francesca Cavarocchi – con la supervisione scientifica di Enzo Collotti – si snoderà attraverso tre scenari: la città della guerra (1940-1943), la città dell’occupazione (1943-1944) e la città della Liberazione. Fin dagli anni ’20 il regime assegna al capoluogo toscano un ruolo chiave nel progetto di fascistizzazione della cultura: importante polo accademico e editoriale, Firenze ospita una serie di riviste e istituzioni di rilievo nazionale, dal “Selvaggio” al “Bargello”, fino al Maggio musicale.

HORNIK y the 1480s, Sandro Botticelli was one of the leading painters of the Renaissance and was working for the Medici family. Many works of Bthis period, often considered his masterpieces, use mythological sub- jects to blend contemporary historical references and moral instruction. Pallas and the Centaur, which is recorded in the 1498-1499 inventory as “Camilla and a Satyr,” originally was hung in the “old house” of the Medici family in a ground floor room alongside the chamber of Lorenzo, together with the Primavera.1 The old palace on Via Larga was owned by Lorenzo and Pierfrancesco de’ Medici, cousins of Lorenzo the Magnificent. The female figure with long blonde hair wears a wreath of olive branches with a diamond at the top. Her white, transparent gown is decorated with linked balls or circles, perhaps a symbol of the Medici family crest. She wears leather boots and bears defensive weapons—a diamond-crusted halberd (combined spear and battle axe) and a shield on her back.2 The centaur submits to her, despite his having a bow and quiver of arrows.

    MUSEO DI PALAZZO MEDICI RICCARDI CARTA DEI SERVIZI PREMESSA La carta dei Servizi La Carta servizi, prevista dalla Direttiva del Presidente del Consiglio dei Ministri del 27 gennaio 1994 e dalla Legge Regionale della Toscana 1 luglio 1999, n. 35, risponde all’esigenza di fissare principi e regole nel rapporto tra le amministrazioni che erogano servizi e i cittadini che ne usufruiscono. Essa costituisce uno strumento attraverso il quale il museo comunica con propri utenti permettendo ai visitatori di conoscere i servizi offerti, le modalità e gli standard promessi, e fornendo la possibilità di verificare che gli impegni assunti siano rispettati, di esprimere le proprie valutazioni anche attraverso forme di reclamo. L’adozione della Carta dei servizi si inserisce in una serie di iniziative volte al miglioramento della fruizione dei musei da parte dei visitatori e a definire nuove strategie di ampliamento e diversificazione del pubblico. La Carta sarà aggiornata periodicamente in base anche al monitoraggio periodico dell’analisi dei dati sulla soddisfazione del pubblico. CUOZZO, MPP Thesis Director: Archer St. Clair Harvey, Ph.D. A great many individuals and families of historical prominence contributed to the development of the Italian and larger European Renaissance through acts of patronage. Among them was the Florentine House of Medici. The Medici were an Italian noble house that served first as the de facto rulers of Florence, and then as Grand Dukes of Tuscany, from the mid-15th century to the mid-18th century. This thesis evaluates the contributions of eight consequential members of the Florentine Medici family, Cosimo di Giovanni, Lorenzo di Giovanni, Giovanni di Lorenzo, Cosimo I, Cosimo II, Cosimo III, Gian Gastone, and Anna Maria Luisa, and their acts of artistic, literary, scientific, and architectural patronage that contributed to the cultural heritage of Florence, Italy. This thesis also explores relevant social, political, economic, and geopolitical conditions over the course of the Medici dynasty, and incorporates primary research derived from a conversation and an interview with specialists in Florence in order to present a more contextual analysis.

    Fall 2018 - Florentine Villas ARTH-UA 9308 or ITAL-UA 9404 9656 Tuesdays, 9:00-11:45 a.m. Villa La Pietra, Aula Le Vedute Class Description: This course examines the Florentine villa, attempting to define this specific architectural typology and identify the unique contributions to its history made in and around Florence, primarily in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Emerging from the Middle Ages, the villas of the Florentine area are among the most powerful embodiments of the “rebirth” of classical antiquity that defines the spirit of the Renaissance. The villa is here defined in accordance with its meaning both in antiquity and throughout the early modern period as a domestic structure integrated with its surrounding agricultural estate. Phenomena to be explored include: the evolution of the forms of the patronal residence, from the early Renaissance castle-villas to the classicizing villas of the later fifteenth- and early sixteenth-centuries; the emergence of the formal garden and the identification of some of its most characteristic elements; the rapport between the villa and its urban cousin, the palace. Special emphasis is given to the villas and gardens of the Medici and to the study of Villa La Pietra itself.     HUMANISM and the CLASSICAL TRADITION: EARLY ITALIAN RENAISSANCE (Donatello and Early Renaissance Sculpture) In the early fifteenth century, the two most important sculptural commissions in Florence were the new bronze doors for the Florence Cathedral Baptistery and the exterior decoration of the Church of Orsanmichele. Orsanmichele, once an open- arcaded market, was both the municipal granary and a shrine for the local guilds. After its ground floor was walled up near the end of the fourteenth century, each of the twelve niches on the outside of the building was assigned to a guild, which was to commission a large figure of its patron saint or saints for the niche. Nanni di Banco. Quattro Santi Coronati, (Or San Michele, Florence), c. 1408-1414, marble Nanni di Banco (c. 1385-1421), son of a sculptor in the Florence Cathedral workshop, produced statues for three of Oransmichele’s niches in his short but brilliant career. The Four Crowned Martyrs was commissioned about 1410- 1413 by the stone carvers and woodworkers’ guild, to which Nanni himself belonged. These martyrs, according to legend, were third-century Christian sculptors executed for refusing to make an image of a Roman god. Although the architectural setting resembles a small-scale Gothic chapel, Nanni’s figures- with their solid bodies, heavy, form-revealing togas, and stylized hair and beards- nevertheless have the appearance of ancient Roman sculpture. Their varying physiognomies and ages identify them as distinct individuals, and their unity of purpose is reinforced by their formal unity; their semicircular arrangement repeats the curve of the niche. Their gestures, serious expressions, and heavy draperies reflect the gravity of the decision they are about to make.

Filippo Brunelleschi - Dome 1436 Fresco: art of painting on moist painting on moist plaster with water-based pigments. Plaster: a paste mixture of sand, lime and water that hardens when applied to a surface. Paint applied to wet plaster creates a chemical bond and begins a process of carbonization (produces calcium carbonite crystals). This process continues for a long time, colors become richer rather than fading. Pigments become fixed as integral part of the wall and will last as long as the wall. Plaster remains damp for a day. Large detailed work is done in sections within a day. Artist and apprentices work: Build scaffolding for high places. Wall preparation cleaning & plastering. Pigment grinding and mixing colors.
