INTRODUCTION

How many times have you been writing or editing a manuscript and got stopped because you weren’t sure whether a word should be capitalized or not? Sure, you could get out your in-print dictionary or style guide, or go to your online subscription or CD-ROM. And if you spend a bit of time researching, you might find the answer you’re looking for. But wouldn’t it be easier if you had an alphabetized list you could check at a glance? Well, now you do! Often, different reference books have different answers. So the first thing you need to know is which reference has the answer you need. If you’re writing a book manuscript (or a short story that will be included in a book) or an article for a popular-style magazine, you need to go by the rules in The Chicago Manual of Style and the spellings in Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary. If you’re writing an article for a newspaper or a journalistic-style magazine, you want to follow The Associated Press Stylebook and Webster’s New World College Dictionary. If you’re writing for a Christian publisher, or self-publishing for a Christian audience, you should check The Christian Writer’s Manual of Style for capitalization of religious terms. Sometimes a dictionary will list a lowercased word and then say the word is “often capitalized.” In those cases, either is acceptable, but the lowercase spelling is preferred, the capitalized spelling being the alternate. Following is an alphabetized list of words listed in the above industry- standard reference books. I’ve included the sources where I’ve found these words with abbreviated designations: CMOS, MW, AP, NWC, CWMS. Trademark names are marked with TM. Reference books change some rules and dictionaries change some spellings in each new edition, especially with technology terms. So make sure you always consult the most recent version. I’ve used the current editions as of this printing. For general capitalization guidelines based on CMOS and AP, I encourage you to check out my Proofreading Secrets of Best-Selling iii

Authors (Lighthouse Publishing of the Carolinas, January 2014). It covers capitalization topics such as:

• Academic subjects, courses, and degrees • Family relationships • First words after a colon • Military forces • Place names • Professional titles • Pronouns for deity • Terms of endearment • Titles of books, chapters, articles, poems, movies, etc. • Topographical names

This capitalization dictionary is not all-inclusive. If there are any words you think should be listed here, please e-mail me at [email protected] and give me your suggestions for additions that could be included in a future edition.
