I would like to mention that the whole family contributed to this book. We are also extremely thankful to our friends, who, thanks to their previous experience, have introduced us to the process of creating chess books, with their invaluable advice and ideas. Considering the abundance of material regarding this topic that was gathered, we decided to make this book only the first, lower level of the “Positional sacrifice” edition. My father and I worked hard to make sure that the new book will be as interesting as the first one, but also more adapted to the wider audience. -

Isle of Man (IoM) Open has been played under three different labels: Monarch Assurance International Open Chess Tournament at the Cherry Orchard Hotel (1st-10th), later Ocean Castle Hotel (11th-16th), always in Port Erin (1993 – 2007, in total 16 annual editions) PokerStars Isle of Man International (2014 & 15) in the Royal Hall at the Villa Marina in Douglas Chess.com Isle of Man International (since 2016) in the Royal Hall at the Villa Marina in Douglas The Isle of Man is a self-governing Crown dependency in the Irish Sea between England and Northern Ireland. The island has been inhabited since before 6500 BC. In the 9th century, Norsemen established the Kingdom of the Isles. In 1266, the island became part of Scotland and came under the feudal lordship of the English Crown in 1399. It never became part of the Kingdom of Great Britain or its successor the United Kingdom, retaining its status as an internally self-governing Crown dependency. http://iominternationalchess.com/ For a small country, sport in the Isle of Man plays an important part in making the island known to the wider world. Chess Festival
Boris Gelfand’s Remarkable Comeback Yochanan Afek reports back from the star-studded Netanya International Chess Festival A big International Festival was organised in the coastal Israeli city of Netanya by the Israeli Chess Federation and the local municipality, supported by the generosity of businessman Roman Abramovich, likely best known to the readers as the owner of Chelsea Football Club. It has been quite a while since Netanya last hosted a strong international chess event, but the city has a long and respectable tradition of grandmaster tournaments. They were initially part of the popular Schach-Kait (Chess & Holiday) festival. Over the years various master tournaments were held as well as many editions of a grandmaster crown group, whose winners included the world- class icons Bobby Fischer (1968), Sammy Reshevsky (1969), Lubomir Kavalek (1971 and 1973), and Jan Timman (1975), as well as local heroes Yair Kraidman (1964) and Moshe Czerniak (1965). Played in the VIP room of the city’s Ilya Smirin might be in his fifties, but still produces plenty of attacking and exciting games. football stadium and consisting of two major sections, this year’s edition of the Netanya International Festival was both the biggest beaten in just 25 moves by Tamir Nabaty, 66 g5! The Superstar Effect: Evidence from Chess
The Queen’s Gambit: Explaining the Superstar Effect Using Evidence from Chess * Eren Bilen† Alexander Matros‡ September 24, 2021 Abstract. Superstars exist in classrooms and workplaces. Superstars can either intimidate others by making their peers put in less effort, or they can encourage others by inspiring everybody to “step up” their game. In this study, we analyze direct and indirect effects of a superstar on their peers using evidence from chess. We find that the direct superstar effect is always negative. The indirect superstar effect depends on the intensity of the superstar: if the skill gap between the superstar and the rest is small (large), there is a positive (negative) peer effect. JEL classification: M52, J3, J44, D3 Keywords: superstar, tournament, effort, chess *We would like to thank seminar participants at Dickinson College, Laboratory Innovation Science at Harvard, Lan- caster University, Murray State University, Sabanci University, Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, University of Nebraska Omaha, and University of South Carolina, as well as, participants in the 6th Contests Theory and Evidence conference at the University of East Anglia and the 90th Southern Economic Association Meeting for their questions and suggestions. We now have a sole leader on 4.5/5 in China's Yu Yangyi who beat the Russian GM Dimitri Bocharov with the black pieces in the top board match up. Several players had the chance to match that score but the draws by Lu Shanglei, Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son, Surya Sekhar Ganguly, Avetik Grigorian and Merab Ganunashvili allowed Li Chao, a convincing winner over Dao Thien Hai, Ivan Sokolov who downed Xiu Deshun, and Boris Chatalbashev who beat Marat Dzhumaev to be the eight players in second place half a point behind on 4/5. Local hope Susanto Megaranto remained in contention with an unbeaten 3.5/5 after full blooded battle with IM Oliver Dimakiling that ended in a draw. They are joined by Bocharov, John Paul Gomez, Viorel Iordachescu, Wei Yi, Vladislav Tkachiev, Oleg Korneev, Ehsan Ghaem Maghami, Xu Jun, Nguyen Duc Hoa, Wang Chen, and Wan Yunguo.
