We now have a sole leader on 4.5/5 in China's Yu Yangyi who beat the Russian GM Dimitri Bocharov with the black pieces in the top board match up. Several players had the chance to match that score but the draws by Lu Shanglei, Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son, Surya Sekhar Ganguly, Avetik Grigorian and Merab Ganunashvili allowed Li Chao, a convincing winner over Dao Thien Hai, Ivan Sokolov who downed Xiu Deshun, and Boris Chatalbashev who beat Marat Dzhumaev to be the eight players in second place half a point behind on 4/5. Local hope Susanto Megaranto remained in contention with an unbeaten 3.5/5 after full blooded battle with IM Oliver Dimakiling that ended in a draw. They are joined by Bocharov, John Paul Gomez, Viorel Iordachescu, Wei Yi, Vladislav Tkachiev, Oleg Korneev, Ehsan Ghaem Maghami, Xu Jun, Nguyen Duc Hoa, Wang Chen, and Wan Yunguo. Tomorrow is a well earned rest day with an excursion planned to nearby Bogor but we can expect more exciting chess when the games resume for Round 6 at 9.30 am on 22 October and Round 7 later that day at 4.30 pm. Issue 4 Page 2 2nd Indonesia Open Chess Championship 2012 Round 4 Report: No More Players Perfect Score All top three board encounters were drawn and as a result no player is left with a perfect score. Joining Dimitri Bocharov, Lu Shanglei, Surya Shekhar Ganguly, Avetik Grigorian, and Merab Gagunashvili on 3.5/4 are Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son and Yu Yangyi, the only two players able to record wins from amongst the chasing pack. Yu proved too strong for Hungary's No 1 woman player Hoang Thanh Trang while Nguyen defeated IM Wang Chen. Many of the pre-tournament favourites are now also very much back in contention with 3/4 including top seed Ivan Sokolov and second seed Li Chao. Local hope Susanto Megaranto is also in this mix with a solid performance to date as is another early favourite Jaan Ehlvest while Viorel Iordachescu cannot be counted out. This group includes Xiu Deshun, Dao Thien Hai. John Paul Gomez, Boris Chatalbashev, and Marat Dzhumaev are also still very much to be reckoned with. Of the none GMs, IM Oliver Dimakiling has also out his GM norm hopes back on track while FM Wei Yi will be looking for at least an IM norm. • Tradewise Gibraltar Chess Festival 2015
Tradewise Gibraltar Chess Festival 2015 Monday 26 January - Thursday 5 February 2015 Round 1 Report: 27 January by John Saunders The first round of the 13th Tradewise Gibraltar Masters, played at the Caleta Hotel on 27 January, featured a glittering array of grandmasters and professional players pitted against amateur entrants from all over the world. As is usual on these occasions, the professionals triumphed by a huge margin but, as in football's FA Cup, there was much excitement along the way, including one remarkable David versus Goliath achievement for an amateur player. This year's tournament is very special. It features a member of the ultra-exclusive '2800 Club'. The top seed is former FIDE world champion Veselin Topalov from Bulgaria, making his return to individual open tournament chess after two decades of playing only against fellow elite players in closed tournaments and big matches. Before the game he struck a positive note in interviews, saying how much he was looking forward to the challenge and suggesting he found the constant round of elite-only tournaments with the same handful of players to be a bit boring. In many ways Topalov is the Tal of the 21st century: if you had to pick out a player of the post-Kasparov era who always plays an aggressive game and fights for the point in every game – and, most importantly, does so with a consistently high degree of success – the genial Bulgarian would be a good choice. You only have to look at his games to realise that he is a man who relishes a challenge.
