Schachfestival International Chess Festival, annually from (March) 1976 – (March) 1989 Lugano Open, Switzerland: The Fabulous 80s # Sosonko # Seirawan # Korchnoi # Sax # Kurajica # Béla Tóth # Mariotti # Ralf Hess # Tukmakov # Ftáčnik A legendary Open tournament in the beautiful Swiss-Italian (Tyrolian) Prealps town of Lugano, Ticino, Switzerland. The hoodie guy with his back to the camera is indomitable IM Jay Whitehead (R.I.P.). Of course the person he is analyzing with is the one and only, indefatigable GM Viktor Korchnoi. But look at the all-star kibitzers! Ex-World Champion Boris Spassky is seated next to Korchnoi. GM Florin Gheorghiu is standing next to Spassky. GM Sergey Kudrin is between Boris & Viktor. The photo is by French photographer Catherine Jaeg. This nice shot – and text is taken from the homepage Dr. Mark Ginsburg presents a personal chess history – “The Fabulous 80s: Lugano” http://nezhmet.wordpress.com/category/chess-tournaments/lugano-1984/ (Mark Ginsburg, who was rooming with John Fedorowicz, meeting Jay Whitehead – those were the days!) Korchnoi (3x), Seirawan (2x), Sosonko (inaugural ed.), Sax, Tukmakov, Ftáčnik, Kurajica, a.o. won. Players not winning at Lugano are including Spassky, Larsen, Hübner, Timman, Piket, Miles, Short, Nunn, Unzicker, Teschner, Hort, Pachman, Gligoric, Ivkov, Nikolic, Adorjan, Ribli, Szabo, Flesch, Georgiev, Gheorghiu, Soos, Balashov, Psakhis, Gulko, Mednis, Reshevsky, Browne, De Firmian, Spraggett, Quinteros, Nogueiras, Chandler, Torre, Westerinen, Petursson, Dückstein, Lautier, Anand. Female stars: Maia Chiburdanidze, Pia Cramling, Tatjana Lematschko, Jana Miles, Alisa Marić, a.o. Swiss players: W. Hug, Lombard, Glauser, Bhend, Franzoni, Züger, Wirthensohn, Känel, Trepp, a.o. DIE SCHACHWOCHE Cover Nr. 10/1987 DIE SCHACHWOCHE Nr. 10 / 1985 The city of Lugano had hosted already the 1968 Chess Olympiad (men), and a Grandmaster Tournament in 1970, a double round robin with eight of the world's top non-soviet chess players. Bent Larsen won outright ahead of easy runner-up Fridrik Olafsson, then as joint third / fourth Unzicker and Gligoric, followed by fifth Robert Byrne, sixth Laszlo Szabo, seventh Lubomir Kavalek and on eight and last place Jan Hein Donner. No swiss player was invited to compete due to lack of strength. Lugano 1970 Compiled by Phony Benoni Eight of the world's top non-Soviet players assembled in Lugano, Switzerland, for a peaceful double- round tournament in early 1970. Using the estimated ratings from Chessmetrics, it was a Category XVI event with an average rating of 2632. Enjoying the scenery were (in alphabetical order): Robert Eugene Byrne, Jan Hein Donner, Svetozar Gligoric, Lubomir Kavalek, Bent Larsen, Fridrik Olafsson, Laszlo Szabo, Wolfgang Unzicker Larsen may have been concentrating more on the board than the scenery, as he won his first five games to take a two-point lead. This looked to be insurmountable, as this was one of those events when having no weak players leads to conservative play. 67% of the games were drawn, and three players were unable to win a single game. Of the 19 decisive games, nearly half involved Larsen. He was able to make it interesting with a couple of losses in the second half, which allowed Olafsson to get within a half-point with three rounds to go. However, Olafsson took a quick draw with White in their twelfth round game, which essentially decided matters. In the last three rounds the only decisive game was Larsen's win over Byrne, consigning the American to fifth place. For Larsen, another in his great run of tournament wins around this time. Olafsson held onto an easy second, followed by Gligoric and Unzicker. The German deserves a special mention; after losing his first two games, his ascent to =3rd included wins over Larsen and Olafsson. 11 22 33 44 55 66 77 88 1 Larsen ** 1= 10 10 =1 1= 11 == 9.5 points 2 Olafsson 0= ** 10 == 1= =1 1= =1 8.5 points 3 Unzicker 01 01 ** == == == == 1= 7.5 points 4 Gligoric 01 == == ** == == == =1 7.5 points 5 Byrne =0 0= == == ** == == 11 7.0 points 6 Szabo 0= =0 == == == ** == == 6.0 points 7 Kavalek 00 0= == == == == ** == 5.5 points 8 Donner == =0 0= =0 00 == == ** 4.5 points http://www.chessgames.com/perl/chesscollection?cid=1020067 Back to the legendary Open chess tournament, and one of the strongest Swiss Open series ever, sponsored by the Banca del Gottardo, from 1976 to 1989 annually played in March in the beautiful (Swiss-Italian Tyrolian) Prealps town of Lugano, Ticino: Those were the days: Lone Pine, California, Lugano Open Festival, internationally mixed in gender and ages, London Lloyds Bank Masters, and New York Open can be regarded as the predecessors of the Gibraltar Tradewise Chess Festival & Co. today.
