Engelhardt opened the meeting at 8:40. Introductions were made. Minutes from the February 20, 2008 meeting were reviewed. G. Rademacher made a motion to accept the minutes. S. Bruno seconded the motion. Motion passed. County Updates/Information Sharing: Arenac County: No report was available. Bay County: D. Oberlies reported that Western High School sent a representative to MACUL. She remarked that it is awesome to send teachers off to learn new innovative things. G. Rademacher reported that Central High School is looking at tri-semesters. He also mentioned that the North Central staff is interested in the ISD crosswalk. 1 J. Strieter reported on the upcoming event, “Principal for a Day” on April 16th. It is an opportunity to job shadow a principal or superintendent for a day. L. Engelhardt reported that the student clubs are involved in state competition and they are in the thick of fund raising for the competition. Midland: C. Wildes shared some of the happenings in Midland. They include senior seminars, competition, and Construction Days. She also mentioned that Midland will be purchasing KeyTrain and STAR, a management system. J. Lanning reported that teachers attended MACUL and student organizations are competing. She also reported that they are looking at a welding summer school program. She mentioned that they are continuing to promote articulation and dual enrollment. They are making students more aware of articulation. She also shared that their Building Trades is going to New Orleans through Habitat for Humanity. She also announced that she will be retiring. Best wishes for her retirement were extended from the membership. She will be missed. Saginaw: S. Bruno reported that teachers and students were taking advantage of attending Summer Institute, MACUL, Skill Day, and the Great Lakes Maritime Academy tour. She also mentioned that they were working with Emily and Ceil on their articulation agreements. C. Shappee reported that students toured Delta and were very impressed. Delta: M. Jarosz spoke briefly about Delta’s two new programs, Fire and Industrial Loss Prevention Office and the Writing Certificate Program. E. Clement reminded everyone of the deadline to complete their articulation agreements, mastery grids, and gap analysis. MACUL Conference-Discussion of Sessions and Best Practices: A. Sholtz shared two Best Practices. The first was Moodle, a course management system. She was impressed and excited to share this with her staff. It was something that could be used immediately upon her return. The second Best Practice was called Recipes 4 Success. It can be found at http://www.recipes4success.com/ A. Schippert mentioned that Moodle is available at the Saginaw ISD and offered its use to members. 2008 Summer Institute: P. Buczek reported that we have approximately 30 participants signed up for the Institute. The registration forms can be found on the website. Registration deadline is May 2 nd . P. Graves reminded members that the theme is “College Ready/Work Ready”. The dates are June 16-19, 2008 and June 24-25, 2008. The Institute will be held at the Saginaw ISD Transition Center. She reported that our keynote speaker for the Institute will be Dan Mulhern, the First Gentleman. Other highlights she mentioned were N. Ohle’s session on the Generation Gap, 2 day work site experiences, Employer Expectations, a student panel, and area Chamber presentations by the 2 Chamber presidents. Members were encouraged to go back to their schools and urge their colleagues to consider attending. 5-Year Perkins & Tech Prep Plan/Regional Planning Initiatives P. Graves announced that our 5-Year Plan was submitted to the State on time. She also noted that the Perkins 5-Year Plan will align with Tech Prep to develop a knowledge economy, increase rigor, increase attendance in college, provide early college experience, prepare students for high-skill, high-wage, high-demand jobs in the region, and provide programs of study. Members were reminded to submit their articulation agreements before May 1, 2008 along with the Career Cluster Grids and Gap Analysis. It was noted that more attention must be given to core indicators and performance. If these indicators are not met for three years, the State will step in. If the core indicators are not met for five years, funding can be pulled back. It was also reported that Tech Prep students finish their degree in less time. Tech Prep does make a difference. P. Graves reported that our Tech Prep grant is due May 1, 2008. This year’s grant has new requirements. One new requirement is site budgets. She will work with members to complete this process. Our allocation for 2008-09 is $160,000. In previous grants, we have gone with traditional ideas. This year, in additional to those traditional ideas, we are looking for new ideas as well. With this mind, members were given colored index cards to write down their ideas for regional activities, county activities, and site grant activities. The ideas are as follows: Regional Tech Prep Approved Activities (pink) • 2008 Summer Institute - $17,000 • National Tech Prep Conference - $10,000 • Career Pathways printing - $3,000 • Promote development/training of digital portfolios for all grads • $ for criminal justice skill day • Delta speakers come to 11-12 grade classes – articulation (College instructors)- NO MONEY • 11-12 Grade Parent Night CTE – for all schools – visit & tour-marketing • Regional Distance Learning Initiative • Career Readiness Certificate Pilot • Inform – Promote Career Readiness – Info to business • Professional Development days at Delta • Non-traditional camps/activities (ex. Make Up Your Mind) • Workshop for Academic teachers on bringing relevance to Academic Classroom – Best Practices • Conference/Workshop for academic instructors on making connections between subject & career • Health Instructors meeting to review curriculum for direct credit and articulation • Pathways meetings • Technology training for instructors (ie.
