Dear Parents and Community Members:

We are pleased to present you with the Annual Education Report (AER) which provides key information on the 2019-20 educational progress for the Swan Valley High School. The AER addresses the complex reporting information required by federal and state laws. The school’s report contains information about student assessment, accountability, and teacher quality. If you have any questions about the AER, please contact the building principal, Markus Muennix, for assistance.

The AER Combine Report is available for you to review electronically by visiting the following web site: https://bit.ly/39WbMXH, or you may review a copy in the main office at your child’s school.

For the 2019-20 school year, schools were identified using definitions and labels as required in the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). A Targeted Support and Improvement (TSI) school is one that has at least one underperforming student subgroup. An Additional Targeted Support (ATS) school is one that has a student subgroup performing at the same level as the lowest 5% of all schools in the state. A Comprehensive Support and Improvement (CSI) school is one whose performance is in the lowest 5% of all schools in the state or has a graduation rate at or below 67%. Some schools are not identified with any of these labels. In these cases, no label is given.

Our school has not been given one of those labels by the Michigan Department of Education.

Key challenges facing Swan Valley High School students are the conditions brought about by the global pandemic beginning March 2020, necessitating innovative methods of course content delivery and other services. Even with a well-established 1 to 1 technology concept, new approaches were required to facilitate student-teacher interactions, instruction and assessments. Teachers, parents and students needed to be trained and supported in the use of technology for remote learning, and key infrastructure components were needed to close the access gap between different groups of students. Employing the use of a school-wide LMS platform, live interactive conference software, strengthening and expanding router access and distribution of mobile hotspots provided additional resources to support our efforts in those areas.

State law requires that we also report additional information. This information can be found in the “traditional annual report” preceding this letter. This document includes the following information:  PROCESS FOR ASSIGNING PUPILS TO THE SCHOOL  School attendance boundaries are set by the Board of Education. All students meeting the academic testing requirements of this school are enrolled to attend. Out-of-district students apply through Schools of Choice.

 THE STATUS OF THE 3-5 YEAR SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT PLAN  Swan Valley High School’s school improvement team consists of teachers and the building administration with input from parents and students. All goals as outlined in the latest school improvement plan have been implemented and are being monitored.

 A BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF EACH SPECIALIZED SCHOOL  Swan Valley Adult and Alternative Ed provides an avenue for non-traditional students to complete their high school diploma. Swan Valley School District does not offer in district specialized school opportunities. The following programs are available to eligible students who reside within the Saginaw Intermediate School District: Millett Learning Center, Emotionally Impaired Program, Hearing Impaired Program, and Educable Mentally Impaired Program.

 IDENTIFY HOW TO ACCESS A COPY OF THE CORE CURRICULUM, A DESCRIPTION OF ITS IMPLEMENTATION, AND AN EXPLANATION OF THE VARIANCES FROM THE STATE’S MODEL  Swan Valley High School meets the requirements of the Michigan Merit Curriculum to offer students a high school diploma. The exact requirements can be found in the Student Handbook and Course Offering Guide. Both of these documents are available at the district web site, www.swanvalleyschools.com .

 THE AGGREGATE STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT RESULTS FOR ANY LOCAL COMPETENCY TESTS OR NATIONALLY NORMED ACHIEVEMENT TESTS  All standardized test scores are placed on the student’s high school transcript. Students take the Michigan Merit Exam (MME) in the spring of their junior year. There are three components to the state test:  SAT plus writing  Workkeys test (3 parts)  M-STEP Tests in Science, and Social Studies

In the spring of 2020, the pandemic prevented schools from administrating this test. In the fall of 2020, Swan Valley and other Michigan public schools offered the PSAT and SAT to students on a voluntary basis. The performance of each tested grade level on these tests is below:

No comparisons can be drawn against scores from previous test administrations due to irregular testing windows, conditions and participation.

In addition to the state offered career and assessment, Swan Valley High School offers the ACT test in the fall and winter. This is an optional assessment and students and families choose to take the assessment. Student performance on the ACT is summarized below.

 We find that when parents have certain information, they are better able to help us help their son or daughter make long-term high school and post-secondary decisions. In this light, we provide several informational workshops each year. o Junior / Senior Parent Night in September o Financial Aid for Seniors' Parents in January o Curriculum Night in May for incoming Freshmen parents

 FOR HIGH SCHOOLS, ONLY ALSO REPORT ON THE FOLLOWING:  THE NUMBER AND PERCENT OF POSTSECONDARY ENROLLMENTS (DUAL ENROLLMENT)  A student must carry a combined academic load that totals five courses between Swan Valley High School and dual enrollment courses. In 2018-19 SVHS had 10 dual enrolled students.

 THE NUMBER OF COLLEGE EQUIVALENT COURSES OFFERED (AP & Articulated Course Work)  Several Swan Valley High School courses are articulated with . This means that students who take these courses at Swan Valley High School and receive a C or higher will also be granted college credit at Delta College. The current courses, which we have articulated with Delta College, are as follows:

 The 2015-16 school year also saw the establishment of articulation agreements with and Baker College. In the past school year, no student took advantage of the Davenport or Baker College articulation agreements.

 THE NUMBER AND PERCENTAGE OF STUDENTS ENROLLED IN COLLEGE EQUIVALENT COURSES (AP Course Work)  Swan Valley High School currently offers four Advanced Placement classes: Literature & Composition, Chemistry, Calculus, and World History. All courses are open to juniors and seniors, but may not be offered each year as that depends on student requests. Students may take the optional AP Exam in the spring and a qualifying score (generally a 3 or higher, but differs for each college and university) may exempt them from college courses. The results of the exam are included on the student’s transcript.
