"Maybe all one can do is hope to end up with the right regrets." -Arthur Miller

Responsibility, crime, family loyalty, denial, betrayal, guilt, capitalism, self-preservation, the dream ofbrotherhood and the bonds between father and son ... Arthur Miller's All My Sons is far from modest in its ambition to confront the contradictions and illusions upon which the American dream is built.

His first hit and a Pulitzer Prize winner, All My Sons was a sign of great things to come from the playwright. At age 32, Miller's work already boasted the psychological complexity and social commentary he would later be celebrated for. Sure, it's a melodrama mounted on a soapbox, but All My Sons works, even after all these years, because it's inhabited by flesh and blood characters.

The family patriarch, Joe Keller, for all his bluster and rationalization, is a product of the Great Depression. He is a practical man who learned to fight hard for his family's interests and future. His son, Chris, is a man shaped by noble conflict and idealism. The incredible losses ofWW2 taught him the value of self-sacrifice. It is inevitable that these two moments in American history would forge men of conflicting values.

In many ways, this insulated family represents America as a whole, then and today. Miller dares to suggest that we cannot, as people of good conscience, hide in our backyards. Joe Keller's appeal to "see it human;' reminds us how easy it is to ignore the large-scale implications of our mistakes; that sometimes tragic or even evil outcomes come in the guise of practicality.

Unlike Miller's next masterpiece, , All My Sons focuses on what the individual owes to society, not what society owes to him. Miller contends that we are all part of the bigger picture of humanity. It is an argument that bears repeating, especially today.

In Act I, Chris talks about his return to the States after serving in the war. He believed that the horrors of WWII would change people for the better; inspire them to accept responsibility for their fellow man. Instead he laments that "... there was no meaning in it here; the whole thing to them was a kind of a bus accident:' It's a sobering indictment when one considers the promise of change and increased fellowship that followed in the aftermath of 9I 11, only to give way to business as usual.

While All My Sons takes its cue from Greek Tragedy and the social dramas of Henrik Ibsen, the particulars of Miller's story come from the true case of a tank manufacturer who knowingly shipped out defective parts, which resulted in the deaths of American soldiers during World War I.

Considering the current War in Iraq with its controversies around ill-equipped soldiers and no-bid corporate contracts, the play's examination of war profiteering seems especially opportune. Time passes but, not surprisingly, history repeats.

All My Sons is about coming to terms with the past and accepting responsibility for our actions. It is about how difficult these things become as time goes by. It is about the lies we tell ourselves in order to move on and despair dressed up as hope. It is about opportunism, idealism and family loyalty.

Ultimately, All My Sons is a challenge to all of us that it is not enough to be no worse than most men. We must be better.

I would like to give special thanks to each member of my talented cast for all their incredibly hard work. I would also like to thank Brandon Cave, Anthony Provenzola, Dave Rowe, Nan Wirth and all the other members of the production crew who generously gave their valuable time and talents to the cause. My sincere gratitude goes to Ann Arbor Civic Theatre as well, for making this timely play a part of their season. Deepest thanks to my wife; Arden, and my three-year-old son, Nate, for letting me disappear night after night to attend rehearsal.

Finally, thank you for attending our humble production. I can only hope that we do justice to Mr. Miller's fine words ... and earn your heartfelt applause as the final curtain closes.
