The Influence of Aleister Crowley on Gerald Gardner and the Early Witchcraft Movement* THE INFLUENCE OF ALEISTER CROWLEY ON GERALD GARDNER AND THE EARLY WITCHCRAFT MOVEMENT* Henrik Bogdan Magic, Sex and Contemporary Paganism Although magic is an intrinsic part of contemporary paganism there is no consensus as to how magic is believed to function, or how it is to be defi ned.1 The absence of a defi nition of magic that all pagans can agree upon is, on the one hand, refl ective of the multifaceted nature of paganism: the term paganism as an -ism, implying a coherent system of beliefs and practices, is misleading since paganism is not a coherent and unifi ed movement. On the contrary, paganism is characterised by a wide diversity that not only includes major currents such as Witchcraft, neo-shamanism, Heathenism, Asatru, Druidry, Goddess Spirituality, etc., but these currents in their turn show rich variety in beliefs, practices and organisational structures.2 The modern witchcraft movement, for instance, consists of Gardnerian, Alexandrian, Celtic, Dianic, and Faery Wicca, to name but a few of the more well-known variants. On the other hand, the lack of an agreed upon defi nition of magic is symptomatic of wider trends in western spirituality that, somewhat simplistically, can be described as the ongoing struggle between disenchanted and re- enchanted worldviews. Are the gods and goddesses invoked in magical rituals actual objective entities, or are they symbols of different aspects of man’s unconscious? This basic question lies at the root of emic defi - nitions of magic, but to some pagans this is not a particularly relevant question since the only thing that matters is that the magic “works” for them. (2007) 44–53. 2 Graham Harvey, Contemporary Paganism (1997). 3 Occultism, which for our present purpose can be described as a secularised form 82 henrik bogdan in a short tract called “Liber O vel Manus et Sagittae”, fi rst published in his magnum opus Magick in Theory and Practice (1929): In this book it is spoken of the Sephiroth and the Paths, of Spirits and Conjurations; of Gods, Spheres, Planes, and many other things which may or may not exist. It is immaterial whether these exist or not. By doing certain things cer- tain results follow; students are most earnestly warned against attributing objective reality or philosophic validity to any of them.4 It is, however, not only Crowley’s focus on the results of magic that is being echoed in contemporary paganism, but as has been pointed out by numerous scholars one of the most common defi nitions of magic to be found in the modern witchcraft movement derives from Crowley.5 In discussing defi nitions of magic in paganism in What Do Pagans Believe? Graham Harvey states: Two defi nitions of magic are current among Pagans: some say that magic is the art of causing change according to the will, others that magic is the art of changing consciousness according to will. The fi rst asserts that magic can change the world; it can heal a sick relative or make someone fall in love. The second suggest that magic can change one’s self at the deep level of one’s consciousness.6 It is usually acknowledged that while the fi rst defi nition derives from Crowley, the second is supposed to have been formulated by the occult- ist Dion Fortune (pseudo. of Violet Mary Firth, 1890–1946). Crowley’s well-known defi nition of magic (or Magick as he chose to spell it) appeared in print for the fi rst time in Magick in Theory and Practice: Magick is the Science and Art of causing Change to occur in conformity with Will. (Illustration: It is my Will to inform the World of certain facts within my knowledge. I therefore take “magical weap- ons”, pen, ink, and paper; I write “incantations—these sentences—in the “magical language” i.e. that which is understood by the people I wish to instruct; I call forth “spirits”, such as printers, publishers, booksellers, and of Western esotericism, is characterised, among other things, by a heavy focus on the experiential aspect of religion; that is, teachings and dogmas often come second to the performance of rituals and various forms of meditation. In this role, Hirsig was Crowley’s right-hand woman during a formative period in the Thelemic movement, but her position shifted when Crowley found a new Scarlet Woman in 1924. Hirsig’s importance in Thelema gradually declined, and she distanced herself from the movement in the late 1920s. The article analyses Hirsig’s changing status in Thelema 1919–1930, proposing the term proximal authority as an auxiliary category to MaxWeber’s tripartite typology.Proximal authority is defined as authority ascribed to or enacted by a person based on their real or per- ceived relational closeness to a leader. The article briefly draws on two parallel cases so as to demonstrate the broader applicability of the term in highlighting how relational closeness to a leadership figure can entail considerable yet precarious power. So says Mona Wilton, heroine of Dion Fortune's novel The Goat-Foot God, to Hugh Paston when he is seeking a suitable site to construct a nature temple dedicated to the great god Pan.Thus the land of Albion (the ancient name for Britain the White Island) is divided up into four quarters of real significance, each having a different approach and response to the legends and traditions, be they Brythonic Celtic, Saxon or Viking. What makes Dion Fortune's novel differ from the average fantasy novel is that she fully believed in everything she wrote, and not least that which she wrote under the guise of fiction, for in writing fiction she could speak of things that might seem strange if presented as bare fact. For there is a truth of the imagination, that when coming from sufficient depth of knowledge and conviction is just as valid as any more prosaic speculation. GLASTONBURY CONNECTIONS The proof of this is evident in the fact that her novels written almost 70 years ago are still in print today and much of what she wrote in them has been taken on board by the esoteric world.

Traditional mainstream media images of Witches tell us they are evil “devil worshipping baby killers,” green-skinned hags who fly on brooms, or flaky tree huggers who dance naked in the woods. A variety of mainstream media has worked to support these notions as well as develop new ones. Contemporary American popular culture shows us images of Witches on television shows and in films vanquishing demons, traveling back and forth in time and from one reality to another, speaking with dead relatives, and attending private schools, among other things. None of these mainstream images acknowledge the very real beliefs and traditions of modern Witches and Pagans, or speak to the depth and variety of social, cultural, political, and environmental work being undertaken by Pagan and Wiccan groups and individuals around the world. Utilizing social construction theory, this study examines the “historical process” of the construction of stereotypes surrounding Witches in mainstream American society as well as how groups and individuals who call themselves Pagan and/or Wiccan have utilized the only media technology available to them, the internet, to resist and re- construct these images in order to present more positive images of themselves as well as build community between and among Pagans and nonPagans.

Ph.D. Introduction Nichole Yalsovac Prophetic revelation, or Divination, dates back to the earliest known times of human existence. The oldest of all Chinese texts, the I Ching, is a divination system older than recorded history. James Legge says in his translation of I Ching: Book Of Changes (1996), “The desire to seek answers and to predict the future is as old as civilization itself.” Mankind has always had a desire to know what the future holds. Evidence shows that methods of divination, also known as fortune telling, were used by the ancient Egyptians, Chinese, Babylonians and the Sumerians (who resided in what is now Iraq) as early as six‐thousand years ago. Divination was originally a device of royalty and has often been an essential part of religion and medicine. Significant leaders and royalty often employed priests, doctors, soothsayers and astrologers as advisers and consultants on what the future held. Every civilization has held a belief in at least some type of divination. The point of divination in the ancient world was to ascertain the will of the gods. In fact, divination is so called because it is assumed to be a gift of the divine, a gift from the gods. This gift of obtaining knowledge of the unknown uses a wide range of tools and an enormous variety of techniques, as we will see in this course. No matter which method is used, the most imperative aspect is the interpretation and presentation of what is seen.

We bought the Richard Wilhelm translation, with its shallow Jung introduction, but never liked it much. Eventually, on a visit to Mr. Germer, he showed us his James Legge edition, to which he had lovingly attached typewritten reproductions of A.C.‟s commentaries to the Hexagrams. We requested his permission to copy the commentaries. Presently we obtained the Legge edition and found that, although not as flamboyant as Wilhelm‟s, it somehow spoke more clearly to us. We carefully glued A.C.‟s notes to it, in faithful copy of our Instructor‟s device. To this day we have the book, whence we have transcribed the notes for the benefit of our readers. Mr. Germer always cast the Yi before making what he considered an important decision.
