Hopkins Royelles Dance Team

HOPKINS ROYELLES TEAM

Purpose: The Royelles of Hopkins High School are a sports team promoting the development of leadership, self- confidence, personal responsibility and sportsmanship through participation in dance. The team assists dancers with the task of becoming well-rounded and successful adults through peer mentorship, team experiences and constructive coaching.

Dancers in grades 7-12 for the 2019/20 school year are eligible to audition. All skills will be taught at the audition – dancers with all levels of experience are welcome!

Auditions: There will be 1 mandatory practice to prepare for the audition. Proper dress is required. Dancers will audition in small groups, but during the audition, judges will evaluate the dancers individually. Prior team participation is not a guarantee for team placement.

Audition Skills - JAZZ: Candidates should have a basic knowledge of and jazz and the ability to execute those skills in order to be considered for the Jazz team. Jazz style, memory and presentation are also important. Based upon last season, a Varsity Jazz dancer should be able to execute the following skills:

Triple pirouettes, grand battements (high kicks), leaps (various), toe touch, grand jete ( leap), splits (R,L,C), fouette turns (closed and a la seconde). The routine for tryouts will connect these skills in a series – the ability to connect one skill to the next is also a requirement for all jazz dancers.

Audition Skills - KICK: Candidates should have a basic knowledge of dance and the ability to execute the listed skills in order to be considered for the Kick team. Precision style, memory and presentation are also important pieces of the audition. Based upon last season, a Varsity Kick dancer should be able to execute the following skills:

High kicks, flexibility movements, splits (R,L,C), toe touch, ability to count music, sharp movements.

Audition Results: Results will be given to dancers at the end of the audition on Tuesday. All decisions and scores are final.

Tryout Tips/Requirements: Smile during clinics and the tryout. Have a positive attitude! Look clean and professional – make us want to “hire” you for the team. We are looking for a fresh, healthy, athletic group of dancers. No gum, candy or soda at tryouts. No cell phones, calls, texting or photos during tryouts or clinic times. Work hard and have an open mind – this is not a studio, we don’t function like one – be open if someone critiques you… it means you’ve earned their attention! 

What to wear to clinics and auditions… · Hair is securely pulled into a bun with no bangs or fringes around the face. Please use bobby pins or hair clips and hairspray to secure loose hair. · All participants must wear a sports bra under a sports tank, full-length leotard or fitted T-shirt that covers the mid-section for auditions. · Participants may wear tights with booty shorts or short athletic shorts. · Participants may not wear jeans, sweatpants or baggy clothing. · All participants are required to wear athletic shoes. Jazz shoes are preferred. · It is recommended participants bring a clearly marked water bottle to each practice.

I’ve made the team… now what? New members should watch for an e-mail from Coach Green with info on the season. There will be several items to complete within the first week to be ready for the season. Parents will be asked to attend Booster Club meetings once a month. Please note… once our team auditions have been held and your dancer is selected, the dancer is considered to be a part of the Royelles and is subject to all rules of the team and of the Minnesota State High School League. If you have any questions about the team during this time, please contact Coach Green via e-mail: [email protected]
