It offers travellers the opportunity 60° 33’ 19.35’’ W to reach oceans, islands and continents not easily accessible by land and agents great new sales opportunities, appealing to existing cruise clients seeking exciting new experiences and those keen on adventure travel, who would consider the ability to explore remote parts of the planet in comfort and style. We hiked through clouds to the cliff- tops on the northernmost Shetland Island. We were so engrossed with the puffins waddling by, we didn't want to go any further but our guides said 'you have to see the gannets'. Reluctantly, we walked the extra 200 metres and stood with our jaws dropped almost to the sea at the sight we found. Over 100,000 gannets, and other birds nest here, and only a privileged few travellers reach it. Yet another moment that I am a very glad I am traveller, not a tourist. • Chapter 6 the Evolution and Relative Competitiveness of Global Arctic Cruise Tourism Destinations
Chapter 6 The Evolution and Relative Competitiveness of Global Arctic Cruise Tourism Destinations Pierre-Louis Têtu Jackie Dawson Frédéric Lasserre 1. Introduction Traveling and vacationing onboard a cruise ships has become one of the most popular forms of tourism over the past few decades (CLIA 2018). A 2018 Passenger snapshot pre- pared by the Cruise Line International Associations (CLIA) outlined the continually in- creasing number of passengers in the last 10 years (CLIA, 2018). For example, the survey found that there were more than 450 cruise ships in 2017 and 2018 that carried more than 27 million passengers and that this number had increased from just 17,8 million passengers in 2009 (Ibid.). The increase in cruises internationally reflects global trends in globaliza- tion, infrastructure development including deep-water ports that can accommodate larger vessels where the economy of scale enables more affordable cruise options, and overall improvements to global transportation infrastructure related to increasingly well-connected airports, ferries and rail and roadways. Historically speaking, the cruise tourism industry is oriented toward the North American market, but in recent years there has been more and more cruise ship activities in Europe, in the Mediterranean and Baltic Seas, as well as in South America, the Caribbean and in emerging markets such as South-East Asia and China. In recent decades, melting of sea ice in the Arctic region has played an important role in the emergence of a cruise tourism industry in that region. Although the increase in Arctic cruise tourism has certainly been influenced by various forces of change such as global trends, commodity prices, demographics, and globalization (Stewart et al.

LUCKY #7 Epic Northwest Passage THE BEST OF THE ARCTIC August 17 - 30, 2019 (13 nights including one pre-trip night in Ottawa) Seven years after we first brought the alumni community our “Big Idea”, we have enhanced and refined this idea and taken it to the next level. Since 2011, we have taken close to 500 alumni association travellers to explore Canada’s North in the company of some of the very best minds from Canadian universities. In partnership with B.C.-based One Ocean Expeditions, we have enjoyed the mobile wilderness lodge taking us to the most remote places in our country. Now, we are introducing an expansion and enhancement: a new vessel that takes polar cruising to a whole new level. The RCGS Resolute is joining the One Ocean Expeditions fleet in November, 2018 and we will be the first to offer her for a charter in the Canadian Arctic in August, 2019. Springer Polar Sciences Aldo Chircop Floris Goerlandt Claudio Aporta Ronald Pelot Editors Governance of Arctic Shipping Rethinking Risk, Human Impacts and Regulation Springer Polar Sciences Series Editor James Ford, Priestley International Centre for Climate, University of Leeds Leeds, West Yorkshire, UK Springer Polar Sciences Springer Polar Sciences is an interdisciplinary book series that is dedicated to research in the Arctic, sub-Arctic regions, and the Antarctic. In recent years, the polar regions have received increased scientific and public interest. Both the Arctic and Antarctic have been recognized as key regions in the regulation of the global climate, and polar ecosystems have been identified to be particularly susceptible to the ongoing environmental changes. Consequently, the international efforts in polar research have been enhanced considerably, and a wealth of new findings is being produced at a growing rate by the international community of polar researchers. Springer Polar Sciences aims to present a broad platform that will include state- of- the-art research, bringing together both science and humanities to facilitate an exchange of knowledge between the various polar science communities. The Series offers an outlet to publish contributions, monographs, edited works, conference proceedings, etc. Topics and perspectives will be broad and will include, but not be limited to: climate change impacts, environmental change, polar ecology, governance, health, economics, indigenous populations, tourism and resource extraction
