(Credit: David Inouye) ScienceDaily (June 17, 2011) — It's summer wildflower season in the Rocky Mountains, a time when high- peaks meadows are dotted with riotous color. But for how long? Once, wildflower season in montane meadow ecosystems extended throughout the summer months. But now scientists have found a fall-off in wildflowers at mid-season. They published their results, funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), in the current issue of the Journal of Ecology. "Shifts in flowering in mountain meadows could in turn affect the resources available to pollinators like bees," says David Inouye of the University of Maryland, currently on leave in NSF's Division of Environmental Biology. Inouye and colleagues George Aldridge and William Barr of the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory, Jessica Forrest of the University of California at Davis, and Abraham Miller-Rushing of the USA National Phenology Network in Tucson, Ariz., found that such changes could become more common as climate change progresses. "Some pollinators with short periods of activity may require only a single flower species," write the ecologists in their paper, "but pollinators active all season must have flowers available in sufficient numbers through the season." For example, bumblebees, important pollinators in many regions, need a pollen and nectar supply throughout the growing season to allow the queen bee to produce a colony. As mid-summer temperatures have warmed in places like the Elk Mountains of Colorado, the researchers have found that the mid-season decline in flowering totals is ecosystem-wide. "These meadows are heavily affected by snowmelt and temperature," says Inouye. "Wildflowers use information from these natural cues to 'know' when it's time to unfurl their petals." The early-season climate is becoming warmer and drier in the high altitudes of the southern Rocky Mountains. These changing conditions are altering moisture availability and hence flowering timing in sub-alpine meadows, says Inouye. The result is a mid-season decline in number of wildflowers in bloom. Such changes in seasonal flower availability across large areas, or in individual habitats, could have serious consequences for entire pollinator populations, says Inouye, which include not only bees, but hummingbirds and others that feed on pollen and nectar. Over the long term, he and colleagues believe, the changes could affect animal-pollinated plants. If bees and hummingbirds need flowers, flowers need hummingbirds and bees. And they all need a high-meadow ecosystem that changes at its own pace, say the scientists, not one moving in fast-forward in tandem with warmer temperatures. The spacecraft's instruments are making a complete reconnaissance of the planet's geochemistry, geophysics, geologic history, atmosphere, magnetosphere, and plasma environment. MESSENGER is providing a wealth of new information and some surprises. For instance, Mercury's surface composition differs from that expected for the innermost of the terrestrial planets, and Mercury's magnetic field has a north-south asymmetry that affects interaction of the planet's surface with charged particles from the solar wind. Tens of thousands of images reveal major features on the planet in high resolution for the first time. Measurements of the chemical composition of the planet's surface are providing important clues to the origin of the planet and its geological history. Maps of the planet's topography and magnetic field are offering new evidence on Mercury's interior dynamical processes.

We prove a homological mirror symmetry equivalence between the A-brane category of the pair of pants, computed as a wrapped microlocal sheaf category, and the B-brane category of its mirror LG model, understood as a category of matrix factorizations. The equivalence improves upon prior results in two ways: it intertwines evident affine Weyl group symmetries on both sides, and it exhibits the relation of wrapped microlocal sheaves along different types of Lagrangian skeleta for the same hypersurface. The equivalence proceeds through the construction of a combinatorial realization of the A-model via arboreal singularities. The constructions here represent the start of a program to generalize to higher dimensions many of the structures which have appeared in topological approaches to Fukaya categories of surfaces. Editor’s note: The brain is densely packed with interconnected neurons, but until about six years ago, it was difficult for researchers to isolate neurons and neuron types to determine their individual roles in brain processes. In 2004 however, scientists, including author Edward S. Boyden, Ph.D., found that the neural expression of a protein, channelrhodopsin-2 (ChR2), allowed light to activate or silence brain cells. This technology, now known as optogenetics, is helping scientists determine the functions of specific neurons in the brain, and could play a significant role in treating medical issues as diverse as sleep disorders and vision impairment. These neurons are heterogeneous, falling into many different classes that vary in their shapes, molecular compositions, wiring patterns, and the ways in which they change in disease states. It is difficult to analyze how these different classes of neurons work together in the intact brain to mediate the complex computations that support sensations, emotions, decisions, and movements—and how flaws in specific neuron classes result in brain disorders. Ideally, one would study the brain using a technology that would enable the control of the electrical activity of just one type of neuron, embedded within a neural circuit, in order to determine the role that that type of neuron plays in the computations and functions of the brain.

Ron Cowen 21 March 2013 A space physicist this week suggests that NASA’s venerable Voyager 1 spacecraft has become the first vehicle to venture beyond the heliosphere — the magnetic bubble created by the Sun — but other mission scientists disagree. William Webber of New Mexico State University in Las Cruces bases the claim on signals recorded last August by the Voyager 1 cosmic-ray subsystem — a device that he helped to build — along with his late colleague and study co-author Francis McDonald. JPL-Caltech/NASA Voyager 1 recorded a sudden drop in cosmic rays The instrument recorded a dramatic drop in the intensity of the cosmic rays trapped last August, a possible sign that it had left the in the Sun’s magnetic field and a concomitant rise in that of rays generated by more Sun's sphere of influence. distant reaches of the Galaxy. That pattern indicates that Voyager 1 has travelled beyond the Sun’s magnetic influence and is no longer being shielded from galactic cosmic rays, the researchers report in a study published online this week in Geophysical Research Letters1. But if one is to believe a press release issued by NASA on 20 March (the same day the report was published), the two researchers jumped the gun. Other Voyager scientists who analysed the same data last autumn reiterate what they said then: the cosmic-ray data indicate that Voyager 1 is in a transition zone within the outer part of the heliosphere, but until a dramatic change in magnetic-field intensity and direction is detected, the craft remains firmly within the Sun’s magnetic sphere of influence.

    Br aın SCAN mcgovern institute for brain research at mit Issue no. 17 Summer 2010 From the director In this issue we highlight the work of Alan Jasanoff, who is developing imaging technologies that will provide an entirely new view of brain activity. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has been critical to our understanding of brain function, and Alan Jasanoff is working to take this technology to an entirely new level. He is designing new molecular sensors that can reveal far more about brain activity than conventional functional MRI, which is based on changes in blood flow and oxygen levels within the brain. Alan’s work draws on nuclear engineering, protein engineering, chemistry and cognitive neuroscience, and exemplifies the interdisciplinary approach that is at the heart of our mission. I am also pleased to announce the appointment of a new faculty member, Feng Zhang, who will be joining the McGovern Institute in January 2011. Feng, who received his PhD from Stanford University and who is now a Harvard Junior Fellow, is an expert on optogenetics and stem cell applications.     STANFORD BIO-X PHD FELLOWSHIPS 2020 Stanford Bio-X Fellows Group Photo 2019 The Stanford Bio-X Graduate Fellowships The mission of the Stanford Bio-X Program is to catalyze discovery by crossing the boundaries between disciplines to bring interdisciplinary solutions, to create new knowl- edge of biological systems, and to benefit human health. Since it was established in 1998, Stanford Bio-X has charted a new approach to life science research by bringing together clinical experts, life scientists, engineers, and others to tackle the complexity of the human body. Currently over 980 Stanford Faculty and over 8,000 students, postdocs, researchers, etc. are affiliated with Stanford Bio-X. The generous support from donors, including the Bowes Foundation, enables the program to remain successful—at any given time, Stanford Bio-X is training at least 60 Ph.D fellows, and Fall 2020 brings 21 new fellows to the program. The Stanford Bio-X Graduate Fellowship Program was started to answer the need for training a new breed of visionary science leaders capable of crossing the bound- aries between disciplines in order to bring novel research endeavors to fruition. Since its inception in 2004, the three-year fellowships, including the Stanford Bio-X Bowes Fellowships and the Bio-X Stanford Interdisciplinary Graduate Fellowships (Bio-X SIGFs), have provided 318 graduate students with awards to pursue interdisciplinary research and to collaborate with multiple mentors, enhancing their potential to gen- erate profound transformative discoveries. Stanford Bio-X Fellows become part of a larger Stanford Bio-X community of learning that encourages their further networking and development.
