Happy New Year! At this time, it truly does seem likely that 2021 will end up being a better year than 2020. The vaccines look promising. People are being careful and following health care advice. It is still a long road back to normal, but I know we will make it. I look forward to resuming in-person meetings. Meanwhile, our virtual meetings continue to be successful. Although members attending the Executive Committee meetings miss seeing everyone in person, they also report being happy, NOT having to drive to and from meetings, especially in bad weather. Our October and November virtual membership meetings both had great participation. We continue to play MATEY. If you haven't joined us for one of these events, make an effort to join in next time. We would love to see you. Or, if you want to continue learning, take one of our courses or seminars in the new year. Our virtual offering have actually grown in number and class size. It seems that our participants like being able to learn in the comfort of their own homes. People are now finding that timing or location is no longer the barrier it once was for attending our educational offerings. We are reaping great benefits from our educational offerings. We know we are helping make better and safer boaters. We are also increasing our membership! There are still challenges ahead of us. However, as challenges arise, Table of Contents members continue to step up. With that kind of support, we can only Commander’s Message 1 expect that better times are ahead. ■ Administrative Officer’s Report 2 Executive Officer’s Report 3 Virtual Membership Party 4 “We will open the book. As the new year approaches, Annapolis Sail and Power Squadron will continue to meet in the virtual world. If you haven't attended a meeting yet, be sure to join us on 7 January. Our guest speaker will be Anna Youngk, the Education Coordinator at the Chesapeake Bay Environmental Center in Grasonville. Be sure to check out the ad for this meeting on page 5. Anna Youngk is bringing a guest to help with the presentation! You won't want to miss this one! It's also a presentation that would interest younger family members, so don't hesitate to invite children and grandchildren! All family members are welcome. On 4 February, once again we will celebrate Founders Day. It won't be the same as in the past- no brunch. But, we'll still honor our beginnings. Our speaker, Jeff Foulk, has developed an app that embodies the original spirit of the founders of the power squadron. Although it offers all sorts of information, the best part might just be in its ability to bring like-minded people together in the boating world. As always, if you have any ideas for things we should do, let us know. We are beginning work on what will most likely be a virtual Change of Watch. Suggestions on making that a special online event would be most appreciated! ■

Cow Hitch - aka - Lark’s Head - aka - Lanyard Hitch There is a discussion on Cruiser’s Forum about what to use to attach jib sheet to the clew of the jib. Who cares? Well, it depends on whether you wish to change out the jib for another, and how long your lines are. You can read about here. https://www.cruisersforum.com/

Executive Officer P/C Bruce Arey, JN

Happy New Year! I am looking forward to 2021 now that the COVID-19 vaccine is starting to be distributed around the country. Hopefully, this will allow people and organizations to start getting back to normal activities sometime in 2021. It will be like a breath of fresh air when we can once again enjoy the camaraderie of dinner meetings, Annapolis Boat Shows, in-person educational classes, the simple pleasures of boating on the bay with friends, and many other in-person activities that we have been missing for almost a year. In the meantime, continue to practice social distancing and vigilance. Enjoy the winter season and maybe start planning your winter boat projects. ■

The mission of the Chesapeake Bay Environmental Center is to promote stewardship and sustainability through environmental education and habitat restoration. Our speaker for the 7 January Zoom meeting will be Anna Youngk, Education Coordinator, Chesapeake Bay Environmental Center. Anna will speak on the CBEC's Birds of Prey Program: Through up-close observations and discussions, the participants will learn about the unique visual and auditory adaptations, as well as other features that put these hunters at the pinnacle of the food chain. Special attention will be given to the importance of raptors to an ecosystem, especially the Chesapeake Bay Watershed. This program will feature our newest bird of prey, the American kestrel. More information concerning the center and its wide range of excellent programs and activities can be found at: https://bayrestoration.org/ Or by contacting: Anna Youngk Education Coordinator Chesapeake Bay Environmental Center PO Box 519, 600 Discovery Lane Grasonville, MD 21638 410-827-6694

Editor’s Note: ASPS arranged a kayak tour at the center in July of 2018 for ASPS members, family and friends. The tour on one of the water trails was guided by personnel from the center. All participants reported having a really great time. To read the full article, download the August 2018 issue of the Anchor Watch from the website.

® ® United States Power Squadrons , we are America’s Boating Club Page 5 ANNAPOLIS SAIL AND POWER SQUADRON Anchor Watch Jan 2021 Nominating Committee Report D/C Jeff Short, JN-IN Chair, Nominating Committee I am happy to present to the ASPS membership a very strong slate of Bridge Officers and Committees for 2021-2022. We are extremely fortunate to have a core of motivated and talented members who have graciously volunteered to step up and our organization into the future. Of course 2020 has been a challenge all around. The ASPS Nominating Committee worked hard via virtual meetings, email and phone calls. This year, every single member of ASPS was asked to contribute more to their organization and join a committee or take a bridge position. Despite this, there are some vacancies in the 2021-2022 slate. This is likely to be an ongoing challenge as USPS, from National level through District and down to the squadron level, has had to find ways to consolidate positions and decrease the number of personnel needed to run their organization. At ASPS, we are lucky to have a large membership with many talented and motivated members willing to lead as is indicated by our strong slate for 2021-2022. Virtual Holiday Party Thursday, 3 December 2020

Even though we could not meet in person, the evening was a pleasant diversion from self- imposed isolation. Everyone had a great time. We were all encouraged to wear holiday finery - Santa hats, reindeer ears, decorated sweaters, etc. .

Howard Cupples gave the invocation.

Michael Maszczenski spoke on neat free apps for the boating family.

Georgiana Maszczenski and Lorrie Short demoed drink recipes for the holidays.

® ® United States Power Squadrons , we are America’s Boating Club Page 7 ANNAPOLIS SAIL AND POWER SQUADRON Anchor Watch Jan 2021

We chatted with one another, and then ended the evening with a sing-along of Silent Night and a cheery wave “Goodbye.”

Our next virtual meeting is on Thursday, 7 January.

When the notice shows up in your email, be sure to respond to get the log in information for Zoom and attend.

Stay connected with your fellow squadron members. After all, we know that none of us is doing anything else presently.

And, if you need help with Zoom, it will be provided to you. Just ask! ■

® ® United States Power Squadrons , we are America’s Boating Club Page 9 ANNAPOLIS SAIL AND POWER SQUADRON Anchor Watch Jan 2021 The Safety Triangle P/C Rich Hughes, SN-IN I just got my monthly ‘love note” from Geogiana reminding me that another safety article is due soon. Each month, this reminder leads me to a fury of research of the web and my personal nautical library. This time I chose to use the book “The Art of Seamanship” by Ralph Naranjo as my source of inspiration. In chapter 1, Ralph discusses the concept of the Safety at Sea Triangle. Frequently, when we speak of safety aboard our boats, we immediately highlight our current flares and a recent inspection of the fire extinguishers. While these items are certainly an important component to a safe vessel, the concept of a safety triangle suggests that this equipment is only a component of a larger definition of safety. “We can think of a crew’s seamanship, the vessel’s seaworthiness, and the safety-enhancing features of the boat’s equipment as the three legs of the 30-, 60-, 90- degree right triangle, with each leg’s length proportional to its importance to safety. The longest leg – the hypotenuse- represents seamanship, the absence of which can sink even the most seaworthy and well-outfitted vessel.”

The Safety Triangle Safety Gear

Vessel’s Seaworthyness

Seamanship

“The next longest leg represents the vessel’s seaworthiness. In many well-documented cases, ill-prepared crews have been saved by the strength and stability of the vessel they were sailing.” “The shortest of the three legs represents portable gear, electronic equipment, and other elements of the “kit” that aren’t part of the hull, decks, rig, or essential systems. This third place standing by no means suggest that communications equipment, navigation electronics, life rafts, harnesses, jacklines, and the like are unimportant. However, when it comes to staying out of trouble in the first place, crew skill and vessel seaworthiness trump safety equipment.” I know “I am preaching to the choir” when I submit this article for an Annapolis Sail and Power Squadron newsletter. The United States Power Squadrons has always advocated for good seamanship. After all, Seamanship is the first course in our curriculum. The underpinning of our organization’s charter is to preach safety. I suggest that we do a good job and that we should continue to advocate for SAFE BOATING in all three aspects represented in the safety triangle. ■

® ® United States Power Squadrons , we are America’s Boating Club Page 11 ANNAPOLIS SAIL AND POWER SQUADRON Anchor Watch Jan 2021 Educational Officer Lt/C Michael Maszczenski, Jr., N Covid19 - The good news: The pandemic did not stop us from having a very successful fall program. ASPS just completed the "Cruising and Cruise Planning" course, and everyone passed. Congratulations to all participants! "Advanced Piloting" is finishing up. The test is this week. Results will be available in January. We had a class of 14 in the "Life-Jacket Labels Explained" seminar. I hope we can do it again this spring or early summer. "Apps for Boaters," which we did in conjunction with Kent Narrows, had 56 participants. I am sure we will do a repeat in the spring.

The scheduling for Winter/Spring has firmed up. Due to COVID19, we will be holding virtual classes using Zoom. We are setting a threshold of at least 10 participants to run a course. So please register now!

Modern engines offer high reliability and good performance through the use of computerized systems for fuel delivery and engine timing. Most of these systems are "black boxes" that can no longer be serviced by weekend mechanics with ordinary tools. The EM course covers those repairs that do-it-yourselfers can still perform, teaches how to diagnose problems that might be beyond your ability to fix, and how to share information with your mechanic so the right repairs get performed. Engine Maintenance also covers basic mechanical systems such as drive systems (propellers), steering systems, and engine controls. The last chapter discusses solutions to problems that could occur while afloat and away from a repair facility. Gasoline, diesel, and outboard engines are treated independently. This course is nine two-hour classes plus a test.
