5 Secretary's Report It is with considerable pleasure that I am again able to report a year of consolidation and progress in our Guild. As the years pass it becomes increasingly obvious that although we are not right at the forefront of national events within the Exercise we are, nevertheless, amongst the leaders. The remarkable achievements reported last year at Edwardstone and Pettistree came to full fruition in 1 986. They were reported by national radio and press and the leadership and enterprise of those responsible - particularly Sarah Titford and Albert Webster - must be recorded. A band was taught under the guidance of Mike Whitby so that the parishioners of Pettistree could hear their bells again at Christmas and while others of last year's projected restorations have not yet materialised there are signs of increasing activity. The growing numbers of new faces which appear at meetings augurs well for the future and we must do our utmost to encourage and help others to increase their ringing knowledge and skills. We can all help in some way and the Recruitment and Training Committee are hoping to expand their activities beyond those of the annual Training Day. I understand that in this field of activity our Guild was not found lacking when some members attended a training seminar run by the Central Council at Northampton during last autumn. We can review the year with pride but let us not become complacent for much needs to be done in terms of fund raising for restoration work, in teaching and indeed in maintaining and improving our standards, the last of which is constantly a problem for each of us to seek to solve. The Annual Meeting was held at Exning where attendance was a little lower than previous years and where a splendid welcome was extended to us by the North West District. I look forward to a good response from members to the invitation from the South East District to visit Grundisburgh in 1 987. At Exning all the Vice-Presidents and Officers, together with the Council Representatives for 1987-89, were re-elected with the execption of the Librarian, Mrs. Stevenson, who left Suffolk during the summer of 1986. Mrs. H. Leeson was elected to this Office. Since the last Annual Meeting the new Bishop of the Diocese - The Right Reverend John Dennis, M.A. - has been pleased to accept the Presidency of the Guild. He is, as many will know, a ringer himself and is thus well aware of the workings of a ringer's Guild. Other Guild events were held as indicated by the calendar and once again they provided enjoyable social contacts as well as achieving their primary aims. In 1 987 there will be some changes to dates and events so please consult the calendar published at the beginning of the Report book. The Management Committee and its sub-committees held their usual meetings and members should note that at Grundisburgh some rule changes will be proposed and details of these have already been published in the Newsletter. My thanks are extended to all members of the Guild for the way in which you enthusiastically tackle the daily problems of running a tower or the Guild. I and my fellow officers are grateful for your help and support and we particularly thank the various District Officers for the part they play in our Guild. Without you all there would be no Guild and that would be a very sad thing to happen. Welcome to the new District Officers and thank you for accepting the challenge of the added responsibility you now carry. I know you will receive support and help from members. Finally, thank you all for the very pleasant welcome extended to both Shirley and I as we have been to events in the Districts. Let us go into 1 987 resolved to achieve even more than last year. Happy ringing to you all. John L Girt

Technical Adviser's Report Without a doubt the highlights of 1 986 have been the restoration of the bells at Edwardstone and Pettistree, due, in no small part, to the drive and enthusiasm of the respective parishes where the bells have remained silent for many years. At Edwardstone the six bells, which have not been rung in living memory, were removed from the tower in May and the five smaller bells sent to the foundry. There the bells were tuned and a new tenor cast to replace the original tenor, which is listed for preservation and has a large section missing from the lip. The bells have been rehung in a new cast-iron frame lower in the tower with new fittings by John Taylor & Co. of Loughborough, with the assistance of copious voluntary labour. The six bells at Pettistree have not been rung since 1 945. Here the old frame has been replaced with a new H frame lower in the tower, accommodating the five larger bells, with a Iowside frame above for the treble. The bells have all been rehung with new fittings by John Taylor 8- Co. and were rededicated on the 14th December by the Bishop of St. Edmundsbury and Ipswich. At the time of 6 writing this report, there is some outstanding work, the main item being the installation of a floor below the bellframe, which is programmed to be done in January 1 987. At Sproughton the clock chimes have been fitted thus completing the restoration work here, whilst at Debenham the clappers have been rebushed, a new staple fitted to the seventh, new pulleys provided for the five larger bells and the bearings repacked on the 2nd, 3rd and tenor. The gudgeon pins on the 4th and 7th bells at Grundisburgh have been replated as has that on the 2nd at Bredfield following the discovery that one of them was broken. At Stonham Aspal the ring of ten are now once more ringable following restoration of the tower and some strengthening of the frame where decay has weakened the lower external cills. During 1 986, inspections have also been carried out at Hoxne, Shimpling, St. Margaret's, Ipswich, Gt. Finborough, Dalham and Boxford. At Hoxne the ring of five hang in a frame dating from the 1 6th Century or even earlier and will require rehanging in a new frame lower in the tower. The parish are proposing to restore this ring of bells in the near future and have set up a committee to raise the necessary funds. At Shimpling an inspection was carried out following a request by the parish, but the condition of the frame and fittings means that a full restoration will be required before the bells are rung again, which at present is beyond the capacity of this small parish. Whilst strengthening work has been carried out on the tower of St. Margaret's, Ipswich, an inspection of the main beams supporting the bell frame revealed that there was insufficient restraint to these beams at their ends where they are built into the walls. This reduces the ability of the beams to resist the torsional forces imposed by the bells when rung in full circle and may contribute to some of the handling difficulties of the tenor. The cast-iron frame at Gt. Finborough is in need of repainting but generally the bells go well and just require more regular maintenance than they have received in recent years. At Dalham measurements were taken of the frame movement whilst the bells were rung singly. These measurements showed that, whilst the movements were not excessive the frame is not strong enough to rehang the bells in, in the longer term. The bells at Boxford will require to be rehung in a new frame lower in the tower before thay can be rung again in full circle. Strengthening work in the form of concrete ring beams will also be required since there are several longitudinal cracks in the middle and upper sections of the tower. There is now local interest in carrying out a restoration of this historic ring which contains three pre reformation bells and a tenor reputed to weigh 22 cwt. At Stansfield strengthening work has been carried out on the tower. Some work has also been done to clear the debris, clean up the fittings and rope the fourth bell on the opposite side of the wheel to reduce the horizontal thrusts when the bells are rung in rounds. It is hoped that this will enable the bells to be rung occasionally for major festivals. Some maintenance work has been carried out at Gt. Glemham and one of the old Pettistree wheels fitted to the third, enabling the bells to be rung on special occasions. At Rougham ringing has moved 'upstairs' with the installation of a gallery just below the cill of the west window. From the summary at the end of the Directory of Towers, it can be seen that there has been a small improvement in the number of towers in the ringable category, i.e. in category six or above. However, there is still much to do before the percentage of unringables is substantially reduced. ian W hitear

Suffolk Guild Maintenance Officer's Report Nineteen eighty-six has been an active year on the maintenance front. The usual three meetings have been held and the following work was carried out by local ringers and members of the committee. BadwelllAsh - The rope guides and ceiling bosses have been rebored to take out rope grooves and a new set of ropes have been fitted. B a r k i n g - The frame has been painted by the local ringers. B e n h a l l - General maintenance work has been carried out. Covehithe - As reported in the Ringing World, work had been carried out to the rope guides and general oiling of fittings. D e b e n h a m - Assistance was given to the bellhanger when the bearings were cleaned and regreased, the clappers rebushed and the pulley blocks refurbished. Edwardstone - The General Secretary, committee members and ringers from the area helped the bell hanger with the removal and rehanging of the bells. 7 Grundisburgh - Local ringers removed two headstocks so that they could be returned to the bell foundry for the fitting of new gudgeon pins and refitted them on their return. Hacheston - The frame and bells where checked and made safe so the treble and second bells could be chimed for services. Henley - The fifth bell has received attention and now is evenly struck. Higham - New ropes have been purchased. Hintlesham - The clock weights have been made safe by the installation of a wooden case. Horringer - The broken gudgeon pin on the third bell has been repaired and some maintenance work has been carried out on the other bells. Ipswich, St. Stephen - These bells were rung again following work carried out by the Sproughton ringers. Kersey - The bell frame has been painted by the local ringers. Nayland - The fifth clapper has been rebushed. Stoke-by-Nayland - Four clapper lubricators have been replaced and the cracked tenor clapper has been welded. The tower has been cleaned out and work on painting the frame has been started. A new set of ropes have been fitted. Wrentham - The fourth bell has been giving trouble and this problem is being investigated. Yoxford - General maintenance work has been carried out. Neville Whittell

Ringing Master"s Report I started my last report with a degree of excitement about Guild restoration projects, 1 986 has seen the completion of two important restorations - Edwardstone and Pettistree. Both have been achieved in a very short space of time, both have their own bands ringing regularly for divine service. 1987 could well be equally exciting with Horham, Hoxne and more recently Boxford now looking encouraging. Turning now to more routine matters, I wish to place on record other successful Guild events during 1 986. The Guild outing in April was again well attended, London Transport excelled themselves this year by producing a 1959 Routemaster in immaculate condition. Towers visited were Bethnal Green (8), St. John at Hackney (8), St. John of Jerusalem, Hackney (8), Islington (6) and Shoreditch (1 2). The most interesting tower being Islington where it was not possible to have more than about ten ringers in the ringing chamber at any one time (an interesting climb made organisation even worse) yet everybody who wanted to had a ring. The striking competitions were held at Bramford and Offton respectively. St. Mary-le-Tower won the six bell competition and the S.E. District won the eight bell competition. The exhibition at Bury Et. Edmunds was very successful, over 1 50 members of the public took advantage of visiting the Norman Tower and viewing the static exhibition. My thanks to Jim and Janet Stannard and other local ringers for manning the tower. The Guild training day was held in November and was enjoyed by over 100 members. The eight courses offered were all presented, although one turned out to be rather more tutorial than a course. The inter-district quiz in the evening provided much amusement and tension with the N.W. District emerging as winners after the final round. The training day in 1 987 will take place in Septemeberto allow time for students to put into practice their knowledge during Guild Quarter Peal week. The peal total for 1 986 is likely, as I write,to be in the region of 1 50. Another good year in terms of numbers but again there is a predominance of doubles M/V. Perhaps 1987 will include more methods and less variations. There must come a time soon when we need to question the economics of publishing these peals in full format. First pealers at the time of writing include:- Julie Anderson, Tim Barber, Sharon Baker, Audrey Barker, Dennis Bugg, Daniel Bye, Norma Bye, Helen Christian, David Doggett, Nicole Harris, Stan Harris, Robert Howe, David Lugg, Mervyn Scase, Mandy Shedden, George Whittell and Katherine Whittell. Personal milestones have as usual been achieved notably: - 50th peal - Owen Claxton, Jim Hollins, Andrew Fisk : 1 00th peal - Amanda Whiting : 1 50th peal - James Smith : 350th peal - Peter Archer: 500th peal - Peter Mayle (400th on Tower bells): 550th peal - Pat Bailey. Peals for the Guild - 100th -Norman Cossey, Frank Arnold, David Salter: 1 50th - Robin Allum : 250th - Alan Mayle : 450th Pat Bailey : 600th - Martin Thorley. 100th Suffolk Tower as conductor - Trevor Bailey; 350th for Guild as conductor - Martin Thorley 8 It Is also interesting to note that Alan and Peter M ayle rang their 3 5 0 th peal together as did Pat and Trevor Bailey.

M y congratulations to all first pealers and those w h o have reached milestones. M y apologies to any that I have missed.

Four peals are particularly w o rthy of note:- Stow langtoft - 2 0 th anniversary of the first peal on the bells and indeed the first peal of m inim us rung for the Guild.

Preston - First peal of surprise by four of the band in three methods.

Kersey - First peal since augmentation, rung by a Sunday Service Band.

Ipswich St. M ary-le-Tower-Peal of Bristol Surprise M axim us rung by a practice night band.

It is particularly true this year that m ore ringers have advanced their pealringing by ringing either peals in m ore m ethods and/or a greater num ber of bells.

Quarter peals continue to help ringers advance. Several firsts w ere scored during quarter peal w eek but not as m any as in the past, I feel. Hopefully w ith the Guild Training Day before the Quarter peal w eek 1 9 8 7 more firsts will be scored.

Ipswich St. M ary le Tow er com peted again in the national 1 2 bell com petition in 1 9 8 6 . Th e team finished 3rd in their qualifying heat, one place off qualifying for the final, behind the College Youths and Bristol Perhaps 1 9 8 7 will be the year.

In concluding I w ould again like to convey m y thanks to all district officers for their w ork during

1 986, both for their w ork and their hospitality. I wish new officers a successful 1987.

One final m essage from m e - I started this report by m entioning the restorations at Edwardstone and Pettistree and the com ing restorations. If w e are to m ake any inroads into reducing the num ber of our unringables and still offer realistic grants the tim e has com e for all of us to start contributing a m ore realistic am ount. Therefore I urge you all to support the "Friends of Suffolk Bells" and ensure a good future for all ringers in this county. Stephen D. Pettman

BELFRY PRAYER

Lord, we thank you for the skills and opportunity you have given us to ring the bells in this place to your praise and glory. We ask that the sound of our bells may be a witness to your Good News for mankind, a summons to all who hear to worship in your house, and a comfort to those in need. Bless the ringing that we do in your Name. Amen.

O Lord, open our lips. Response: A nd our mouth shall proclaim Your Praise.

10 OBITUARIES FOR 1986 Thomas Cameron Ford - Palgrave

To m w as a master craftsman, part of a line of carpenters and wheelwrights in Palgrave for m ore than 2 0 0 years. He died in M arch at the wonderful age of 90, a Christian gentlem an and family m an with a great love of children.

His ringing career spanned most of this century in com pany with characters like John Souter,

Clem ent More, Harry M oss and Bertie Harrison. Clifford Roper Lovett - Grundisburgh

Cliff, a Sussex man, joined the Guild in 1 9 5 4 and w as a faithful Sunday service ringer until his death. A keen churchman, he was a warden at Grundisburgh for 1 6 years and, with his wife

M argaret, entered fully into village life and affairs.

He rang seventy peals - most of which w ere for the Suffolk Guild. Charles Marcus Clarke (Jnr) - Grundisburgh

Charles followed his father, Charles, and grandfather, Frederick, as a local ringer.

A poignant m em ory w as his com ing in arm y uniform to ring tow ards the end of the w ar - rem inding us that m any of his friends, and ours, in the village never cam e back. Commander Edward Tyndale-Biscoe - Wickham Market and Debenham

Ted died in Septem ber robbing the W ickham Market - Debenham - Fram lingham area of som eone very special. A modest, unassum ing m an with a delightful puckish hum our, he w as a person one was always glad to see around.

Following a distinguished Naval career - Fleet Air A rm and then Royal Navy leading to Engineer in

C h i e f o n HMS Belfast in the Korean W ar, Ted became involved in teaching ringers and helping towers. M y goodness, how indefatigable he was. W hen, once a quarter, he gathered the 'crew' around him to com e to St. M ary le To w er for a special practice he w ould laughingly refer to it as like being on the quarter-deck. Bernard Smith - Ipswich St. Matthew

Although not a ringer, his wife Freda, daughter Zoe, son-in-law M alcolm and their children were,

Bernard's support and encouragement for the St. Matthew's belfry was monumental. A church w arden for thirty years he w as one of the strong voices behind the restoration of the bells there.

He died on 29th December, aged 69, after several m onths of illness.

We also remember any relatives of our members. M ay they rest in peace. EVERY RINGER SHOULD READ IT
