'The Last Survivor of an Ancient Race': The Changing Face of Essex Gleaning* By STEPHEN HUSSEY Abstract Past authors have identified the early twentieth century as the point at which gleaning finally vanished from the lives and labour of the rural working-class. This paper seeks to re-position this decline, placing its disappearance forward some forty or fifty years to the decades following the Second World War. However, gleaning did not simply continue unchanged into the twentieth century, as the customary practices that had once accompanied it now became obsolete. The paper examines the reasons for the continued use of gleanfing, its changed form, and places the decline of its customary practice within a wider context of changes occurring in rural popular culture at this time. Confirmation of the Minutes of the meeting on 1 September 2020 The Minutes were approved and would be signed by the Chairman at the next meeting held in person. 2350. Matters arising from the September PC meeting 1. Belchamp Otten Community Woodland project (Item 2332.1) – Former Councillor Mark Skellett had confirmed that all three landowners approached at Belchamp Otten had declined to take part in this project. The PC were not in a position to purchase land for the project, because of their limited resources and they also noted potential problems with public liability if residents used equipment to prepare and maintain such a site. Although supportive of the idea, the Council therefore concluded that this project could not be taken forward at this time. They wished to record their thanks to Mark Skellett for his work on this project. 2. ECC Salt Bag Partnership for 2020 (Item 2334.3) – Members wished to thank John Clarke for agreeing to store the salt bags at his property. -

The data for Chipping Hill has been annualised to allow for the low data capture at this site There are no diffusion tube sites with annual mean NO2 concentrations in excess of 60 g/m3 in Braintree and it was considered unlikely that there will be any exceedences of the hourly NO2 objective.
