HISTORY OF CHURCH BUILDINGS The Bible's authors never thought of the church as a building. To early Christians the word “church” referred to the act of assembling together rather than to the building itself. As long as the Roman government did not did not recognize and protect Christian places of worship, Christians of the first centuries met in Jewish places of worship, in privately owned houses, at grave sites of saints and loved ones, and even outdoors. In Rome, there are indications that early Christians met in other public spaces such as warehouses or apartment buildings. The domus ecclesiae or house church was a large private house--not just the home of an extended family, its slaves, and employees--but also the household’s place of business. Gothic beyond Architecture: Manchester’s Collegiate Church My previous posts for Visit Manchester have concentrated exclusively upon buildings. In the medieval period—the time when the Gothic style developed in buildings such as the basilica of Saint-Denis on the outskirts of Paris, Île-de-France (Figs 1–2), under the direction of Abbot Suger (1081–1151)—the style was known as either simply ‘new’, or opus francigenum (literally translates as ‘French work’). The style became known as Gothic in the sixteenth century because certain high-profile figures in the Italian Renaissance railed against the architecture and connected what they perceived to be its crude forms with the Goths that sacked Rome and ‘destroyed’ Classical architecture. During the nineteenth century, critics applied Gothic to more than architecture; they located all types of art under the Gothic label. This broad application of the term wasn’t especially helpful and it is no-longer used. Gothic design, nevertheless, was applied to more than architecture in the medieval period. Applied arts, such as furniture and metalwork, were influenced by, and followed and incorporated the decorative and ornament aspects of Gothic architecture. This post assesses the range of influences that Gothic had upon furniture, in particular by exploring Manchester Cathedral’s woodwork, some of which are the most important examples of surviving medieval woodwork in the North of England. Manchester Cathedral, formerly the Collegiate Church of the City (Fig.3), see here, was ascribed Cathedral status in 1847, and it is grade I listed (Historic England listing number 1218041, see here). It is medieval in foundation, with parts dating to between c.1422 and 1520, however it was restored and rebuilt numerous times in the nineteenth century, and it was notably hit by a shell during WWII; the shell failed to explode. -

They are normally self-contained. Abjuration - renunciation, under oath, of heresy to the Christian faith, made by a Christian wishing to be reconciled with the Church. Accidie - term used in ascetical literature for spiritual sloth, boredom, and discouragement. Acolyte - a clerk in minor orders whose particular duty was the service of the altar. Advocate - lay protector and legal representative of a monastery. Advowson - the right of nominating or presenting a clergyman to a vacant living. Agistment - a Church rate, or tithe, charged on pasture land. Aisle - lateral division of the nave or chancel of a church. Alb - a full-length white linen garment, with sleeves and girdle, worn by the celebrant at mass under a chasuble. Almoner - officer of a monastery entrusted with dispensing alms to the poor and sick. Almonry - place from which alms were dispensed to the poor. Almuce - large cape, often with attached hood, of cloth turned down over the shoulders and lined with fur. Doctors of Divinity and canons wore it lined with gray fur. Cape was edged with little Ambulatory - aisle leading round an apse, usually encircling the choir of a church. Amice - a square of white linen, folded diagonally, worn by the celebrant priest, on the head or about the neck and shoulders. Anathema - condemnation of heretics, similar to major excommunication. It inflicts the penalty of complete exclusion from Christian society. -

The church building is a landmark on the A6 south of the city centre, and the vicarage is adjacent in its own private grounds. Living here has many attractive features. We have our own outstanding C of E primary school nearby with which we have strong links. And very close to the parish we also find outstanding secondary schools, Ripley C of E academy and two top-rated grammar schools. In addition Lancaster’s two universities bring lively people and facilities to the area. Traveling to and from Scotforth has many possibilities. We rapidly connect to the M6 and to the west coast main train line. Our proximity to beautiful countryside keeps many residents happy to remain. We are close to the Lake District, the Yorkshire Dales, Bowland forest, Morecambe Bay, to mention just a few such attractions. Our Church is a welcoming and friendly place. Our central churchmanship is consistent with the lack of a central aisle in our unusual “pot” church building! Our regular services (BCP or traditional, in church or in the Hala Centre) use the Bible lectionary to encourage understanding and action, but we also are keen to develop innovative forms of worship. -

Matters arising from the September PC meeting 1. Belchamp Otten Community Woodland project (Item 2332.1) – Former Councillor Mark Skellett had confirmed that all three landowners approached at Belchamp Otten had declined to take part in this project. The PC were not in a position to purchase land for the project, because of their limited resources and they also noted potential problems with public liability if residents used equipment to prepare and maintain such a site. Although supportive of the idea, the Council therefore concluded that this project could not be taken forward at this time. They wished to record their thanks to Mark Skellett for his work on this project. 2. ECC Salt Bag Partnership for 2020 (Item 2334.3) – Members wished to thank John Clarke for agreeing to store the salt bags at his property. -

Entry is free and refreshments are available from 10:30am. James Gaughan is an experienced soloist specialising in the song and concert repertoire. Based in York, he studies at the De Costa Academy of Singing with Michael De Costa. James gives lunchtime recitals throughout the year. Past performances include at Southwell Minster; Derby, Lincoln, 1 HOSPITALITY. FAITHFULNESS. WHOLENESS. I think it’s become quite normal these days to have the historical concerts, where you go from composer to composer and knit them closely together. “What I’ve tried to do with this set-up is to place little sets from different periods of poetry, which means I can have quite a varied set of three songs which could theoretically be from three different centuries which gives a lot of variety for the audience, but still have some coherent link to it.” The monthly Coffee Concert programme continue with saxophonist Rob Burton in February, pianist Jill Crossland in March and Violin and Piano duo James and Alex Woodrow in April.
