Message from ... Harry Fritz, NAIA Executive Director

The 22nd Annual NAIA Soccer Championship Tournament marks the culmination of another year of phenomenal growth for collegiate and amateur soccer. The number of varsity teams in the NAIA has steadily increased with over 200 of NAIA's more than 500 member institutions now sponsoring the sport on an intercollegiate basis. 1980 marks the second year that the tournament has been hosted by Sangamon State University at Springfield, . Sangamon State has re ceived national acclaim for its innovative and highly regarded academic programs. Sponsorship of an event of this scope and importance is a tribute to the growing popularity of soccer and involves the dedication and involve ment of many. We especially wish to acknowledge the support and encour agement of SSU President Dr. Alex Lacey, Tournament Director Dr. Wilbur Moulton, Host Athletic Director Aydin Gonulsen and Bill Taylor, local busi nessman who has been invo·lved in the promotion of Sangamon State's soccer program from its inception. This is the second year of the expanded 10-team championship format. The eight area winners have advanced to the nationals by winning their district and area tourneys. The eight area teams are joined by an at-large entry, the highest team in the final NAIA poll that did not survive its area championship playoff. These nine are joined by a strong Sangamon State host team. The NAIA maintains that the intercollegiate athletics program is inte gral to the total educational program. We salute those whose attendance, advertising and support make possible this great event.

On behalf of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, I'd like to welcome everyone to th e 22nd Annu al NAIA National Soccer Ch ampionship th is week at Sangamon State University. Soccer is clearly the most rapidly growing sport that our organization sponsors championship events in. It is apparent that this growth is not unique to our program, but rather a national trend. We honestly believe, however, that NAIA soccer is among the best to be found in the country. Congratulations to the ten teams involved in this tournament. May this event be a highlight of your intercollegiate career and may each coach and athlete bring honor to himself, his team and the institution he represents. The NAIA expresses deepest appreciation to the Dr. Pepper Company and Sangamon State University in producing this championship event in the great city of Springfield, Illinois. This tournament is just one more example of the NAIA's belief that intercol legiate athletics is an integral part of the total educational experience.

" IN BUSINESS TO SERVE YOU" Sangamon State University is delighted to welcome the NAIA National Soccer Tournament to the Un iversity and the Springfield community again this year. Soccer was established as the University's first intercollegiate sport four years ago, and the community and local schools support more than 150 compet itive soccer teams with much of that competition taking place on the University's fields. Kiwanis Field, where the Tournament is being played, was built with community contributions and is an indicator of the importance of soccer to the community and the University. While you are here I would invite you to tour our facilities and visit with our students, faculty and staff. We are particularly proud of our new Public Affairs Center, which serves as a focal point for our community activities as well as providing extensive faculty office and classroom space. If there is anything anyone at the University can do to make your visit at Sangamon State more enjoyable please let us know. Have a good Tournament and come back and see us again.
