DOCUMENTARY FILMS Page 1 of 10 DOCUMENTARY FILMS Documentary Films, strictly speaking, are non-fictional, "slice of life" factual works of art - and sometimes known as cinema verite. For many years, as films became more narrative- based, documentaries branched out and took many forms since their early beginnings - some of which have been termed propagandistic or non-objective. Documentary films have comprised a very broad and diverse category of films. Examples of documentary forms include the following: z 'biographical' films about a living or dead person (Madonna, John Lennon, Muhammad Ali - When We Were Kings (1996), Robert Crumb, Stephen Hawking in A Brief History of Time (1992), or Glenn Gould) z a well-known event (Waco, Texas incident, the Holocaust, the Shackleton expedition to the Antarctic) z a concert or rock festival (Woodstock or Altamont rock concerts, Madonna: Truth or Dare (1991), Stop Making Sense (1984)) z a comedy show (Richard Pryor or Eddie Murphy shows) z a live performance (Cuban musicians as in Buena Vista Social Club (1998), or the stage show Cirque du Soleil-Journey of Man (2000)) z a sociological or ethnographic examination following the lives of individuals over a period of time (e.g., Michael Apted's series of films: 28 Up (1984), 35 Up (1992) and 42 Up (1999), or Steve James' Hoop Dreams (1994)) z an expose including interviews (e.g., Michael Moore's social concerns films) z a sports documentary (extreme sports, such as Extreme (1999) or To the Limit (1989), or surfing, such as in The Endless Summer (1966)) -

SXSW FILM FESTIVAL ANNOUNCES 2018 FEATURES AND OPENING NIGHT FILM A QUIET PLACE Film Festival Celebrates 25th Edition Austin, Texas, January 31, 2018 – The South by Southwest® (SXSW®) Conference and Festivals announced the features lineup and opening night film for the 25th edition of the Film Festival, running March 9-18, 2018 in Austin, Texas. The acclaimed program draws thousands of fans, filmmakers, press, and industry leaders every year to immerse themselves in the most innovative, smart and entertaining new films of the year. During the nine days of SXSW 132 features will be shown, with additional titles yet to be announced. The full lineup will include 44 films from first-time filmmakers, 86 World Premieres, 11 North American Premieres and 5 U.S. Premieres. \ PART IV THE ALTERNATIV E FILM 335 Historical Overview: The Development of the Documentary Film FROM SILENCE TO SOUND Influenced by the Industrial Revolution's emphasis on science and technology, Louis and Auguste Lumière made their first films in 1895 primarily from an urge to reproduce the everyday world, to record and document life around them. These filmed scenes from life (workers leaving the factory, a train arriving), however, could not indefinitely hold the imagination and attention of the viewing public. Although from 1895 to 1907 most films were documentary films or, perhaps more appropriately, film documents - after 1907 such films were on the decline. Audience interest in film's ability to capture the everyday world was undercut by the growing production of fake documentaries, which were often much more exciting to watch than the film record of the real thing. The narrative film in which the emergent art of film editing altered precamera activity and created drama as it manipulated time and space appealed to audiences more than films of unstructured material. Although newsreels became a regular part of the movie program in 1910 when both Pathé and Gaumont in France released the first sets of composite documentary news footage, the public's chief interest in the movies had permanently shifted to the narrative film. As a result, although many documentary films throughout the century functioned as theatrical entertainment, the history of the form has generally been allied to noncommercial enterprise and has been developed by those filmmakers, governments, and social institutions who saw in the cinema a medium with the power to move people to social and political action.
