Gandhi is a bridge figure across cultures in that his thought and action were inspired by both Indian and Western traditions. And, of course, in that his influence has spread across the globe. He was shaped by his upbringing in Gujarat India and the influences of Hindu and Jain piety. He identified as a Sanatani Hindu. Yet he was also influenced by Western thought: the New Testament, Henry David Thoreau, John Ruskin, Count Leo Tolstoy. We will read these authors: Thoreau, On Civil Disobedience; Ruskin, Unto This Last; Tolstoy, A Letter to a Hindu and The Kingdom of God is Within You. We will read Gandhi’s autobiography, My Experiments with Truth, and a variety of texts from his Collected Works covering the social, political, and religious dimensions of his struggle for a free India and an India of social justice. We will read selections from his commentary on the Bhagavad Gita, the book that was his daily inspiration and that also, ironically, was the inspiration of his assassin. We will encounter Gandhi’s clash over communal politics and caste with another architect of modern India – Bimrao Ambedkar, author of the constitution, Buddhist convert, and leader of the “untouchable” community.

He was the youngest of four siblings. When asked about his mother, he would say: ‘Te outstanding impression my mother has lef on my memory is that of saintliness. To keep two or three consecutive fasts was nothing to her. During another Chaturmas (holy period), she vowed not to have food without seeing the sun. We children on those days would stand, staring at the sky, waiting to announce the appearance of the sun to our mother. And I remember days when, at his sudden appearance, we would rush and announce it to her. She would run out to see with her own eyes, but by that time the fugitive sun would be gone, thus depriving her of her meal. “Tat does not matter,” she would say cheerfully, “God did not want me to eat today.” And then she would return to her round of duties.’ 1869 Lef: Gandhi’s mother Putlibai (1839–1891) was a religious woman.

Abstract: It is crucial to remember that Gandhi did not receive the informal honour of the ‘Father of the Nation’ all of a sudden. In order to dismantle the imperial regime of the British Empire and resuscitate India with truth and non-violence as weapons of resistance, there was a metamorphosis that this saintly yet controversial figure underwent. A self-transformation on this visionary’s part was imperative to the realisation of his grand vision of a national revolution taking place, and it can be traced back to his perusal of the works of a range of philosophical writers from Leo Tolstoy to John Ruskin among the Westerners and from Rabindranath Tagore to Gopal Krishna Gokhale among the Indians. Movements triggered by him such as those of civil disobedience and non-cooperation can be largely attributed to his fervent encounters with works of these seminal writers. This research article, therefore, intends to look at how a multitude of Western and Indian writers have significantly contributed towards shaping the psyche of the ‘Mahatma’ that this leader of the national independence movement gradually came to be known as.
