As I’m very familiar with the Sound of the Reference DAC over the years, I’m pretty sure to remember how it sounds, especially with extremely familiar discs. Some might say, that this is difficult without direct comparison of the DAC with the older incarnation of Firewall modules to the one that is equipped with the actual new Firewall modules, it is new, you want it to sound better, but that might only belong to your imagination. And that might be the case with other gear, tweaks, cabling, whatever, when the difference in sound is very small. You wish it to be, but you can’t be sure. Now I listened to my most familiar discs again, and the difference is not subtle, it is simply astounding! Never would i have thought of such a big improvement, coming with the replacement of the older Firewall modules. Everything is brought out better, acoustic instruments sound incredibly natural and real. Everything has more depth and contour. It simply sounds more energetic and precise. The reverberation of voices and decaying instruments lingers longer than before. Basses are more profound. And again, I’m hearing a cornucopia of details that were previously imperceptible. And with excellent sounding discs, my room is flooded with sound, I have the feeling I’m bathing in it.

Blir oppdaget av den senere så beryktede manageren Simon Napier-Bell (Wham m.m.). Gir ut to lite vellykkede glam-rock-pregede album, men tittelkuttet på tredjeplata «Quiet Life» (1979) peker mot noe mer sofistikert og særpreget. 80-TALLET Med platene «Gentlemen Take Polaroids» (1980) og «Tin Drum» (1981) utvikler Japan en egenartet asia- tiskinspirert sound, og får en hit med den minimalis- tiske balladen «Ghosts». Oppløses i 1982 etter mye intern krangel. Sylvian begynner å samarbeide med eksperimentelle musikere som Riuichi Sakamoto, Robert Fripp (King Crimson) og Holger Czukay (Can). Gir ut sitt første soloalbum «Brilliant Trees» (1984), følger opp med doble «Gone To Earth» (1986) og «Secrets Of The Beehive» (1987), som alle har status som kultklassikere. Jobber også innen teater, foto- kunst og dans. 90-TALLET Japan gjenforenes under navnet Rain Tree Crow, lager et halvbra album og oppløses igjen. Sylvian flytter til USA og gifter seg med Prince-protesje- en Ingrid Chavez. By day he is a chronic collector-motion lamps, robots and most especially books, with a particular emphasis on early-20th-century edi­ tions of fairy tales and the works of Arthur Rackham. His bibliomania has become sufficiently advanced that in recent years he has been studying bookbinding. In 2000, on the recommendation of guitarist Bill Frisell (on whose album The Willies Keith played), David Sylvian invited Keith to join a tour of Europe. Sylvian's career started in the mid-'7os with the band Japan. Over the past 25 years he has pursued a wide variety of solo projects, continuously challenging and moving farther away from common notions of pop mu­ sic. In 2005 Sylvian asked Keith to participate in the recording sessions for his latest project, an ensemble group to be known as Nine Horses. Keith's upright acoustic and electric bass playing contributed to the unique sound on both the album Snow Borne Sorrow and a follow-up EP. When Keith was invited to join Sylvian's tour of Europe last fall, Amphora knew where his mind would be when not on stage. Tøyingen av grensene begynte med nysgjerrighet og utålmodighet, men fremsto etter hvert som et klart uttalt prosjekt. Sylvian ønsket å utfordre, og gradvis oppløse, selve reisverket i det man forbinder med popsjangeren: Vokalen, harmoniene, rytmene – kjennetegnene til en tradisjon han fremdeles insisterer på at han arbeider innenfor. Parallelt med denne utfordringen av låtformatet, trådte Sylvian som person gradvis inn i skyggene. Derfor blir fotografiene av ham færre og færre jo nærmere man kommer slutten av den nylig utgitte, retrospektive boka Hypergraphia – the writings of David Sylvian, som samler tekstene han har skrevet siden han slo igjennom med bandet Japan, og viser frem det visuelle universet som har ledsaget Sylvians musikk fra begynnelsen av. Da jeg første gang åpnet Hypergraphia, var det med en følelse som lignet den jeg husker fra da jeg spratt plasten på soloalbumene hans Brilliant Trees, Gone to Earth og Secrets of the Beehive på åttitallet.
