Summary and plans for 2018 2 1. Introduction The Engineering Design Centre (EDC) is a joint initiative of GE and the Institute of Aviation. As the largest engineering design centre in Europe, we have been providing state-of-the-art solutions for the modern industry for 18 years. We combine the technological potential of our organisation with cutting-edge digital technologies. We develop our products and the competences of our engineers, increase the responsibility of entire teams and expand our network of contacts. In 2017, our engineers had numerous accomplishments, including the commencement of simulation tests of the ACCV compressor and the first prototype of the FETT engine, which are being developed in cooperation with engineers from Warsaw, Prague, Turin, and Munich. Our project entitled Buzzard Power Generation Upgrade received 2nd place (Silver Winner) at the 30th IPMA World Congress in Astana in the category of IPMA Project Excellence Award 2017. It was carried out mainly by the BHGE engineers who cooperated with the Control Engineering teams from Florence and India in the area of improving the power supply standards for crude oil drilling rigs. In May 2017, members of the Nacelle team from Aviation Systems Mechanical, along with their colleagues from Middle River Aircraft Systems, conducted a certification crash test of Passport 20 engine nacelle inlet with a bird. This was a great success demonstrating the skills of our staff. In October 2017, we participated in the finals of the 3rd edition of “Start-ups in the Palace”. The event was intended to help Polish start-ups develop breakthrough technologies and ideas for global markets. It was attended by Mr Andrzej Duda, the President of the Republic of Poland, as well as by the representatives of companies that attach great importance to innovation and promotion of technological thought. The Organisers invited the EDC because they recognised our high innovation culture and contribution to technological development. They also appreciated our cooperation with universities. Last year focused on the creation of new relationships with the academic environment and on cultivating those developed many years ago. It is a joint determination to improve the quality of education of the future engineering staff, as well as a quest for cooperation opportunities on scientific and business projects. In 2017, we launched the implementation doctoral programme of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education, which offers benefits to all the three parties to the agreement, namely the employee, the company and the higher education institution. The EDC was visited by students from the USA, Helsinki, 3 Kraków and Warsaw, and we took an active part in events organised at technical higher education institutions. The present report shows our openness, innovativeness, flexibility and constant development. About General Electric and the Institute of Aviation General Electric (GE) General Electric was founded in 1892 following a merger of two enterprises: the Edison Electric Light Company managed by Thomas A. Edison and the Thomson-Houston Electric Company, run by Charles A. Coffin. General Electric was created to meet the most important global needs in the field of energy, medical and transportation infrastructure, consumer technologies and financial services. GE’s creative approach to business and its organisational culture makes it a world leader in numerous sectors, catering to the specific requirements of clients worldwide. Thanks to specialised employees, services and top-shelf technologies, GE speaks the industrial language, shapes new rules of competition for companies worldwide, and shows other organisations the direction for their development. The Institute of Aviation (ILOT) The history of the Institute of Aviation dates back to the early days of Poland's independence. However, it officially commenced its activities on August 1, 1926. Ever since its foundation, the Institute of Aviation has established contacts which have helped to develop and export the Polish technological thought abroad. It has continued in this spirit for more than 90 years, participating in the research of nearly all Polish aero-structures. The Institute of Aviation is currently an institution specialising in the performance of top-quality research that provide solutions to the problems of contemporary aviation and the space industry, not only in Poland but also worldwide. It works closely with global leaders in the aviation industry, such as General Electric, Airbus, Boeing or Pratt and Whitney. Thanks to nearly 18 years of cooperation with General 4 Electric – one of the world’s 17 largest corporations, under the name of Engineering Design Centre, the Institute also carries out research for other sectors of the economy. Cooperating with technical universities, scientific institutes, R&D units, knowledge transfer centres and industrial organisations, both in Poland and abroad, the Institute of Aviation also makes it possible to utilise the achievements of top-class scientists and participate in the performance of international projects not only in the field of aviation. By investing in the development of its staff and scientific-research infrastructure, the Institute of Aviation is consistently committed to achieving the position of one of the best research institutes in Europe and maintaining competitiveness on the global research market. The Institute of Aviation features 6 professional sections as well as 30 well-equipped and specialised laboratories. 1. CSR at General Electric – a statement by Marian Lubieniecki – President of General Electric Company Polska Sp. z o.o. Ladies and Gentlemen, I have had the pleasure of observing EDC’s development since the very first days, that is to say for nearly 18 years. I remember the times when the company employed merely a handful of engineers. We worked together to create our structures and execute the first projects. As the years went by, our organisation expanded and became more aware of the market’s needs. Step by step, we created a business ecosystem around us, establishing relationships with scientific and research institutions, as well as business organisations. In 2017, we focused on GE integration both in Poland and across Europe. This was a time of network mapping and looking for common interests. As a result of our activities, we began launching our joint projects with the GE Aviation factories in Bielsko-Biała (Avio Aero) and Dzierżoniów (Unison). Today, through our dynamic cooperation, we are able to influence the technological development of the entire 5 region. Together with other GE centres, we are responsible for the entire product lifecycle, from design, through tests and production, to maintenance. Thanks to in-depth integration we know that we all act along the same lines in times of dynamic changes. Our Clients are a priority for us. Our continuous development goes hand in hand with their changing needs. We are flexible in our activities and create our innovative solutions with openness to all, even the most original, ideas. In the pursuit of our goals we inspire not only ourselves and each other, but also others. With our extensive possibilities and a well-developed network of GE in Poland, we can really transform the nature of engineering both in the region and worldwide. I believe that the EDC, as an 18-year-old, will find its bearings in the world of new contacts, challenges and projects, without losing its main features, such as innovation, persistence in pursuing its goals and, above all, the will to cooperate. It is the power of joint actions that we trust the most in. This is what got us to where we are today. Marian Lubieniecki EDC Site Leader President of the Management Board at General Electric Company Polska Sp. z o.o. 6 4. CSR at the Institute of Aviation – a statement by dr hab. inż. Witold Wiśniowski, prof. nadzw.– the Director of the Institute of Aviation Ladies and Gentlemen, The primary objective of the Institute of Aviation is to conduct scientific research focused on industrial implementation. The scope of the Institute’s interests encompasses issues related to technologies of aero-engines and rocket engines, technologies of composite structures, designing of light aircraft and systems of transportation by means of these aircraft, as well as analyses of materials and subassemblies. International cooperation plays a fundamental role for the Institute of Aviation, which includes joint projects and the provision of research services. The strategic partner in this area is General Electric, with the Engineering Design Centre created specifically for this company within the framework of the Institute. Great significance should also be given to the projects executed within the framework of the European Union.
