The new Gensler Experience Index examined people’s intentions in using space, as well as their expectations, interactions and the quality of the space ttributing values to buildings is a fairly straight- PHOTO: GENSLER forward process when it comes to well-established sectors such as office and residential, where the A building type has become a commodity. However, leisure buildings don’t follow the same rules, and valuing them is far more complicated because of what goes on inside them: how do you value an experience? This issue we look at work done by Gensler, who set out to tackle this question by doing research to find evidence of the importance and design in creating experiences (see page 110). The practice has created the Gensler Experience Index, a matrix which describes best practice in experience design. Gensler carried out a multi-year, mixed-methods investigation that combined qualitative and ethnographic research – such as 30 two-hour interviews with people in five markets across the US – with quantitative research, Gensler suggest that every space should be designed as social space including a nationwide, panel-based survey of over 4,000 respondents.

The architecture project is authored by Arthur Casas and co-authored by Cristiane Trolesi, from C+AD Arquitetura e Design. The interiors were designed jointly by Arthur and the owner – a longtime friend of the Studio, with whom Arthur has a lot of affinity to develop a four-handed project. The biggest challenge was to simultaneously meet the demand for free walls for works of art, for shelves to house decorative objects and for generous environments, with wide spans and an adaptable layout. The solution was to extend the apartment's social area and optimize the existing and new walls as much as possible. Thus, a large main room was created, which incorporates a living room, library, dining room and entrance hall, integrating several environments in a single space. The kitchen has a fully retractable opening, which allows an integrated or private configuration for the social area, in addition to providing the apartment with spaciousness, crossed air circulation, natural lighting and functionality.

An economic use of elements was one of the guiding principles of the brief, which was laid out across the space’s existing floors. We imagined the living room, with its 6-meter ceilings, as the central space in the house. It connects the apartment’s three levels via a staircase that goes from the basement – transformed into a guest suite and laundry area – to the walkway on the upper level, which leads to the children’s bedroom. The garden is separated from the living room by large glass doors that slide into the walls, integrating interior and exterior spaces.

It is a project intimately conceived with a long time client and friend. Its conception started with ARTHURCASAS.COM the selection of the plot. The triangular shaped area was surrounded by high walls that left the future owner quite skeptical about the real possibilities of reaching the splendid views towards Gavea Rock and the Atlantic. For him to exchange his cozy apartment for a house in São Conrado, it was necessary to prove that the architecture could transform the apparent disadvantage of the steep terrain and the strong presence of the neighbors into the starting point of an exceptional project that lifts itself to reach the sea. A bachelor with an intense social life, the young entrepreneur was very open when he proposed a simple program: a space for hosting friends and sharing with them the landscape; another for having total privacy and contemplating the landscape.
