May - June 2021 Edition//Design Essentia//DE INDIA | 35 TP APARTMENT Located on one of the most elegant streets of Paris, where the major fashion stores and art galleries are concentrated, this apartment signed by Arthur Casas, co- authored by architect Marina Werfel, was designed to fulfill the wishes of the residents - a couple with two children - for practical, integrated spaces so they can welcome friends and accommodate a family life. The project’s biggest challenge was to connect the environments and, at the same time, respect the conditions of the building, adapting to the limitations imposed by the original structure of the apartment, which was preserved in its original aspect. The social area brings together, in the same environment, the living room, the dining room and the kitchen. In order to delimit each area, the furniture was arranged so it could define the project’s layout. The monochromatic palette and materiality guarantee the aesthetic harmony of this space. For the finishing, preferences were for wood textures and for the use of iron in natural tones. Furniture and art pieces were chosen along with the client - much of it was searched and selected in Paris. Among the highlights, there are different sofas, arranged to bring balance to the environment; and the custom-made stool placed behind the sofa, serving as an object support or as a seating for any dining room meeting. However, leisure buildings don’t follow the same rules, and valuing them is far more complicated because of what goes on inside them: how do you value an experience? This issue we look at work done by Gensler, who set out to tackle this question by doing research to find evidence of the importance and design in creating experiences (see page 110). The practice has created the Gensler Experience Index, a matrix which describes best practice in experience design. Gensler carried out a multi-year, mixed-methods investigation that combined qualitative and ethnographic research – such as 30 two-hour interviews with people in five markets across the US – with quantitative research, Gensler suggest that every space should be designed as social space including a nationwide, panel-based survey of over 4,000 respondents.

The architecture project is authored by Arthur Casas and co-authored by Cristiane Trolesi, from C+AD Arquitetura e Design. The interiors were designed jointly by Arthur and the owner – a longtime friend of the Studio, with whom Arthur has a lot of affinity to develop a four-handed project. The biggest challenge was to simultaneously meet the demand for free walls for works of art, for shelves to house decorative objects and for generous environments, with wide spans and an adaptable layout. The solution was to extend the apartment's social area and optimize the existing and new walls as much as possible. Thus, a large main room was created, which incorporates a living room, library, dining room and entrance hall, integrating several environments in a single space. The kitchen has a fully retractable opening, which allows an integrated or private configuration for the social area, in addition to providing the apartment with spaciousness, crossed air circulation, natural lighting and functionality.

For him to exchange his cozy apartment for a house in São Conrado, it was necessary to prove that the architecture could transform the apparent disadvantage of the steep terrain and the strong presence of the neighbors into the starting point of an exceptional project that lifts itself to reach the sea. A bachelor with an intense social life, the young entrepreneur was very open when he proposed a simple program: a space for hosting friends and sharing with them the landscape; another for having total privacy and contemplating the landscape.
