I came to this research from a background as a young community performance-maker, working for over ten years in a small town called Bellingen and surrounding areas, located along the North Coast of NSW, Australia. With young people and other artists from these communities, I facilitated a number of large multimedia performance events, and helped to establish new community facilities and resources in conjunction with local organisations, festivals and regional arts networks.1 I saw community-based artwork as vital to engaging with the world and challenging social problems at the point where they intersected with everyday life. The people I worked with believed community artwork could do more than just challenge the inequitable social structures, stereotypes or government structures which constrained us. It could help us to examine how we saw ourselves and how we connected with others who were different from us. In the process of my performance work and as I began to study at university, I saw that communities both liberated and constrained people. Many who engaged with the productions I facilitated saw their geographical or ethnicity-based community as repressive impediments to their development, yet they were still gaining entertainment, support and connection through many other types of community interaction. Many new types of social networks were emerging around me and some even questioned key notions in community performance such as “commonality” and “unity”. While I remained committed to community performance, I began to believe new understandings of community were required to negotiate the many ways people form and resist these intimate networks of social interrelation. I needed new theoretical frameworks in order to understand how to negotiate the ethical difficulties of uneven power relations inside communities and to understand how community art could encompass and support difference. 1 I began the

Nor do they have a reputation for communicating in riddles, deliberately speaking the opposite of what they mean. However, as the realities of mass media communication have evolved, so too have the tactics employed by activists for capturing the media spotlight. More and more groups are now building their actions around a playfully ironic sensibility, creating attention-getting stunts, graphics, and slogans, along with pre-packaged media sound-bites. Within this larger trend, one particular tactic involves a form of masquerade, as groups very deliberately assume the identities of their opponents.

Lawrence, the Free State or anti-slavery capital of Kansas during Bleeding Kansas, was dubbed the "Cradle of Liberty" by Abraham Lincoln. Partly due to this reputation, a vibrant Black community developed in the town in the years following the Civil War. White Lawrencians were fairly tolerant of Black people during this period, though three Black men were lynched from the Kaw River Bridge in 1882 during an economic depression in Lawrence. When the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in 1894 that "separate but equal" was constitutional, racial attitudes hardened. Gradually Jim Crow segregation was instituted in the former bastion of freedom with many facilities becoming segregated around the time Black Poet Laureate Langston Hughes lived in the dty-asa child. Then in the 1920s a Ku Klux Klan rally with a burning cross was attended by 2,000 hooded participants near Centennial Park. Racial discrimination subsequently became rampant and segregation solidified. Change was in the air after World "vV ar II. The Lawrence League for the Practice of Democracy (LLPD) formed in 1945 and was in the vanguard of Post-war efforts to end racial segregation and discrimination. This was a bi-racial group composed of many KU faculty and Lawrence residents. A chapter of Congress on Racial Equality (CORE) formed in Lawrence in 1947 and on April 15 of the following year, 25 members held a sit-in at Brick's Cafe to force it to serve everyone equally.

    ARTIST PROFILE MC Trey: The ‘Feline Force’ of Australian Hip Hop Tony Mitchell A Hip Hop Role Model Fijian-Australian MC Trey, aka Thelma Thomas, is arguably Australia’s leading female MC, who has begun to receive prominent mainstream media coverage for her Pacific Islander style, dynamic live performances, distinctively street-wise and musically diverse recordings, and her hip hop workshops. Described by Andrew Drever in the Sydney Morning Herald as ‘one of Australian hip hop’s true role models,’1 to date she has released two acclaimed mini-albums, the ten-track Daily Affirmations (2000)—described as a ‘landmark for the Australian hip hop scene’ and album of the week in Sydney street mag Revolver2—and the eight-track Tapastry Tunes (2003), described by George Palathingal in the Sydney Morning Herald’s ‘Metro’ as ‘[d]emonstrating potentially the biggest leap forward for Australian hip hop.’3 Trey (initially an anagram for ‘The Rhymin’ Edifying Young’un’) has also contributed tracks to numerous Australian hip hop compilations, most notably the all-woman First Words (2000), released on Sydney-based label Mother Tongues, described by label founder Heidi Pasqual as ‘the first label in the world dedicated to the development of Women in Hip Hop Music.’ On the US release Best of International Hip Hop (Hip-O Universal, 2000) she represents Australia with her ‘melodic, realistic, personal, political, positive’ MC style, alongside a host of non-Anglophone male MCs and crews from Argentina, Algeria, Switzerland, Israel, Romania, Greece, Austria, Greenland, Croatia, France, South Africa and Portugal.
