WILLIAMS: Our Kind of People: Social Status and Class Awareness in Post -Reconstruction African American Fiction (Under the dir ection of William L. Andrews) Postbellum African American fiction provides an index to the complex attitudes toward social status and class divisions that arose within post -Civil War black communities. As I argue, African American narratives in the last quarter of the nineteenth century encode the discourse of class in discussions of respectability, labor, and discrimination. Conceiving of class as a concept that does not necessarily denote economic conditions, both well -known and largely ignored narrativ es of the period emphasize moral and ideological parameters for judging social distinctions. Writers theorize whether intraracial class stratification thwarts black sociopolitical advancement, fracturing black communities from within, or conversely, foster s racial uplift led by the black “better class.” Though the fiction variably delineates social classes, each of the texts under study in Our Kind of People imagines classification as an inevitable and useful means of reforming the turn -of-the-century Ameri can social order. Photographs by Barb Kudnra. 50th Anniversary of Cather Foundation Marked by Spring Conference Celebration and l Oth Willa Cather International Seminar Spring Festival Centers on My Antonia 10th International Cather Seminar In Nebraska The 50th anniversary of the Cather Foundation was Wendy K. Perriman marked by a number of extraordinary events at the annual Spring Festival held April 29-30. Highlights included the Over 140 scholars from Britain, India, Egypt, and dedication of the Mildred Bennett Wall; the Friday panel the United States gathered in Nebraska for the Willa Cather which met to discuss the history of the Foundation; the Satur- International Seminar, 2005. The first part took place from Saturday day Passing Show Panel and afternoon tour, both featuring My June 18th - Tuesday June 21st in Cather’s childhood home town of /intonia; Mary Vaughan’s delightful exhibit of prairie vistas Red Cloud. The Seminar then switched location to the campus of in the Gallery of the Opera House; and the premiere of "An the University of Lincoln-Nebraska (Tuesday June 21st - Saturday Adaptation of ’A Singer’s Romance,’" commissioned by the June 25th) where Willa Cather had been an undergraduate. This is an interview with Marc Grossman done on behalf of the Association for Diplomatic Studies and Training and I’m Charles Stuart Kennedy. You go by Marc? GROSSMAN: I do. Q: What happens, why are some Marcs spelled with a C and some with a K? Do you have any idea? GROSSMAN: My dad always said it was his contribution to culture. Q: Okay. Well, we’ll start talking about him but first, when and where were you born? GROSSMAN: I was born in September of 1951 in Los Angeles, California. Q: Where in Los Angeles? GROSSMAN: In East Los Angeles. My parents lived in Pico Rivera, or then, just Pico. Q: Okay. Let’s talk about your, sort of your background. On your family’s side, let’s talk about the father’s family, the Grossmans. Do you have any idea where they came from? GROSSMAN: We have a vague idea. Both of my father’s parents, my grandmother and grandfather, were immigrants to the United States. They came separately from Chernowitz, which is now Ukraine but my father believes at the time of their immigration it was Romania. I think they came to the United States in the 1920s. They moved to New York, met in the US and settled in the Bronx. They then moved, first to Arizona and then to California in the 1940s, where my grandfather used to sew.

    INVENTORY TO ARCHIVAL BOXES IN THE MOTION PICTURE, BROADCASTING, AND RECORDED SOUND DIVISION OF THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS Compiled by MBRS Staff (Last Update December 2017) Introduction The following is an inventory of film and television related paper and manuscript materials held by the Motion Picture, Broadcasting and Recorded Sound Division of the Library of Congress. Our collection of paper materials includes continuities, scripts, tie-in-books, scrapbooks, press releases, newsreel summaries, publicity notebooks, press books, lobby cards, theater programs, production notes, and much more. These items have been acquired through copyright deposit, purchased, or gifted to the division. How to Use this Inventory The inventory is organized by box number with each letter representing a specific box type. The majority of the boxes listed include content information. Please note that over the years, the content of the boxes has been described in different ways and are not consistent. The “card” column used to refer to a set of card catalogs that documented our holdings of particular paper materials: press book, posters, continuity, reviews, and other. The majority of this information has been entered into our Merged Audiovisual Information System (MAVIS) database. Boxes indicating “MAVIS” in the last column have catalog records within the new database. To locate material, use the CTRL-F function to search the document by keyword, title, or format. Paper and manuscript materials are also listed in the MAVIS database. This database is only accessible on-site in the Moving Image Research Center.
