So, after a faultless drive, teammates Jan Kopecký (CZE) and co-driver Jan Hloušek (CZE) are the overnight category leaders at the twelfth round of the FIA World Rally Championship 2019. On Thursday afternoon, the crews competing at Wales Rally GB, twelfth round of the FIA World Rally Championship, had to say goodbye to the sun, when the typically rainy Wales weather arrived just in time for the ceremonial start at the harbour side in Liverpool. Steady rainfalls turned the road conditions of the first special stage on Oulton Park race track into something, which most of the drivers explained as “driving on ice”. ŠKODA FABIA R5 evo crew Kalle Rovanperä/Jonne Halttunen set the third quickest time among the R5 competitors and were quickest in the WRC 2 Pro category, while teammates Jan Kopecký and co-driver Jan Hloušek opted for a cautious approach.

  • WRC Goes on Safari This Week, with Changes
www.wheelswithinwales.uk WRC goes on Safari this week, with changes Published: 24th June 2021 Author: Online version: https://www.wheelswithinwales.uk/wrc-goes-on-safari-this-week-with-changes/ The mythical Safari Rally Kenya June 24-27, one of the most famous rallies in the world, returns to the FIA World Rally Championship this week for the first time since 2002. The 6000km open-road blasts of yesteryear around East Africa have evolved to fit the modern WRC, but the Safari’s epic character remains with punishing dirt roads, picture-postcard scenery and exotic wildlife to the fore. None of the WRC’s frontline drivers have experienced the Safari, which translates to “adventure” in the Swahili language and brings a unique challenge to the 12-round championship. Long straight dusty roads where speeds could top 200kph contrast with rocky rutted tracks that reduce cars to little more than walking pace. And with Kenya still in its wet season, rain can transform dry trails into glutinous mudbaths in a matter of minutes. www.wheelswithinwales.uk The interested spectators watching the action around Naivasha, 100km north-west of Nairobi, will, of course, be headed by the wildlife. The area is home to lions, leopards, giraffes, zebras and hippos, all keeping a watch on the red-hot action from a distance. Testing is banned outside Europe so championship leader Sébastien Ogier and Toyota Yaris team-mates Elfyn Evans and Kalle Rovanperä journeyed to Spain to try to simulate what lies ahead on the Great Rift Valley roads. “I’m always excited to discover a new challenge in my career, and I believe this rally will be very different from anything I have done before,” enthused Ogier, who leads Evans by 11 points in the standings as the series reaches it midpoint.

  • M-Sport Will Be Hoping to Continue Their Strong Performance Next
For immediate release: 12th May 2017 M-Sport will be hoping to continue their strong performance next week when the FIA World Rally Championship returns to Europe for the popular Vodafone Rally de Portugal. With Sébastien Ogier, Ott Tänak and Elfyn Evans all behind the wheel of the Ecoboost-powered Ford Fiesta WRC, the team have a strong chance of maintaining their immaculate run of podium finishes and the team are highly motivated to achieve that goal. Having contested a five-day test in the north of Portugal, the team worked on perfecting set-up configurations as well as confirming a number of findings from last month’s extensive research and development test so as to be best placed for the challenges ahead. Next week’s event also marks another landmark in the team’s customer programme with the international debut of the Ford Fiesta R5 Evo2. The latest evolution of M-Sport’s most-successful global rally car includes an engine upgrade with redesigns to the cylinder head and exhaust manifold. Producing additional horsepower, the Fiesta R5 Evo2 will be entrusted to Éric Camilli, Teemu Suninen, Pierre-Louis Loubet, Gus Greensmith and Pedro Heller as they do battle in the highly- competitive WRC 2 category. Popularity and passion are two words that best describe the Vodafone Rally de Portugal. As the first gravel event on European soil, the Portuguese fixture has become a firm favourite amongst competitors and fans alike – the huge number of spectators mirrored in the impressive entry which the rally receives year after year. Based in the coastal town of Porto, the crews will tackle 349.17 competitive kilometres across nineteen special stages.

  • The Loudon-Clear Guide To… Rally Poland Two Rallies Stand
The Loudon-clear guide to… Rally Poland Two rallies stand head and shoulders ahead of the rest of the World Rally Championship when it comes to speed. The first one? That’s easy, everybody knows about Finland and its 1,000 lakes. The second? Sweden, maybe? No. Australia, that was fairly quick last year. Wrong again. Poland. This week’s race around the Masurian lakes, 250 kilometres (160 miles) north of Warsaw is not for the faint hearted. It’s super-quick: Finland without the jumps. Last year, the average speed in Poland was 121.41kph (75.44mph) – just four kph (2.5mph) ‘slower’ than the stages around Jyväskylä. Speed and spectators are what this Polish spectacle is all about as fans from across central Europe turn out to watch the fastest go faster. These are the rallies where the crews really earn their stripes. With speeds so high, everything has to be 100 per cent perfect – particularly the relationship between driver and co-driver. Poland’s a place which really sorts the men from the boys. Inside the car, it’s eye-wateringly quick in places, and on the outside it’s an absolute demonstration of what modern rallying at its pinnacle is all about: pace, precision and shocking performance. The rally has been around for a very long time – some reporting it to be the second oldest in the world (after Rallye Monte-Carlo) – with local star Tadeusz Heyne guiding a Dodge to an inaugural Rajd Polski victory in 1921. A regular in the FIA European Rally Championship, this is only the fifth time it has been included in the World Rally Championship.
